Pino Palladino and Blake Mills Share New Song ‘Ekuté’

Pino Palladino and Blake Mills have shared a new song from their upcoming album Notes with Attachments. Check it out below.

According to a press release, the new track was inspired by Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti and began as an idea Palladino had at home in London with drummer Chris Dave. “It just came from a one-chord jam that I liked the feel of,” Palladino explains. “The next thing we did on it was in New York, with Ben Kane, an engineer friend of mine who worked on some of D’Angelo’s stuff. We had Marcus Strickland come in, who had the idea for that multitracked bass-clarinet horn section.”

The piece was Mills’ first encounter with Palladino’s original music, leading to their collaboration on the album. “It was eye-opening to hear something that was repetitive, but still had so many different [directions] that it went in,” Mills adds. “It was kind of a revelation, to work on a song in those terms.”

Notes With Attachments arrives March 12 via New Deal/Impulse. It includes the previously released single ‘Just Wrong’.
