DMX on Life Support Following Heart Attack [Updated]

DMX is in the hospital on life support after reportedly suffering a heart attack triggered by a drug overdose. The rapper was taken to a hospital in White Plains, New York, where he remains on a ventilator, his attorney Murray Richman confirmed.

Richman said he could not confirm reports that the 50-year-old rapper and actor had overdosed on drugs.

“Last night, Earl ‘DMX’ Simmons was rushed to the hospital after collapsing at home,” a representative said in a statement to TMZ on Saturday evening (April 3). “At this time, he remains in ICU in critical condition. Earl has been a warrior his entire life. This situation represents yet another road he must conquer.” The website adds that his children have flown in to see him, according to a family member.

DMX has long been open about his struggles with addiction. In October 2019, he checked into a drug habilitation center after serving a year-long jail sentence for tax fraud and evasion. “In his ongoing commitment to putting family and sobriety first, DMX has checked himself into a rehab facility,” the rapper’s Instagram told fans at the time. “He apologizes for his cancelled shows and thanks his fans for their continued support.”

After coming onto the rap scene in the late 1990s, DMX became the first artist ever to have his first five albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard charts. His most recent performance was a Verzuz battle against Snoop Dogg last year. Earlier this year, it was reported that he had been working on a new album with features from Bono, Lil Wayne, Snoop Dogg, Alicia Keys, and Usher.

UPDATE: After rumors of DMX’s death trended on social media last night (April 8), the rapper’s manager Steve Rifkind shared a statement on Instagram saying that the rapper is still alive and on life support. “Everybody, please stop with posting these rumors,” he said. “DMX is still alive. Yes, he is on life support, but please, it’s not helping anybody by having them see these false rumors. Let the family relax for a night.”

    This is a developing story.
