Flying Lotus has shared two new singles as part of the soundtrack to the upcoming Netflix original anime series Yasuke, which arrives on April 29. ‘Black Gold’ featuring Thundercat and ‘Between Memories’ with Niki Randa serve as the opening theme and closing credits for the six-episode series. Listen to both tracks below.
In addition to providing the original score for the show, FlyLo also worked as an executive producer on the project, which was created by Bronx-bred and Japan-based director and producer LeSean Thomas. “[LeSean] and I talked about being outsiders in anime,” Flying Lotus said in a statement. “I was like, ‘Why aren’t more Black kids trying to do this? Why is it so out of the ordinary?’ He was saying that it’s because they don’t have examples.”
Thundercat won the 2021 Grammy Award for his album It Is What It Is, which was co-produced by Flying Lotus and earned him a nomination for Producer of the Year, Non-Classical.
