With a major museum survey and an acclaimed public commission, Charles Gaines returns home to LA to show his signature Plexiglas works and watercolors. In his first solo exhibition in LA since 2019, Gaines will present his Numbers and Trees series in its most elaborate form, combining first-time variations with his celebrated systems to make explosively colorful and complex works.In the new Plexiglas works, the artist shot photographs of baobab trees in Tanzania in 2023, resulting in eight large-scale triptychs. These monumental pieces unfold in sequence, each unravelling the mystery of representation while pushing our perceptions to the limit.
Exhibition coincides with ‘Charles Gaines: 1992 – 2023’ (30 October 2024 – 9 March 2025) and ‘Charles Gaines: Arizona Series’ (30 October 2024 – 20 July 2025) at Phoenix Art Museum.”
The exhibition will run at Hauser & Wirth West Hollywood from 19 February until 24 May 2025.
