Doom: The Dark Ages – Rumours and Release Date

Doom: The Dark Ages, rewinds the clock and serves as a medieval era inspired prequel to the hugely popular Doom series and is coming our way later in 2025.

The game will be set several centuries back from the previous game’s in the series, moving away from the futuristic setting and high-tech weaponry seen in Doom Eternal and going medieval with maces, spikes and shields.

According to the developers, id Software, the single-player sci-fi shooter has drawn inspiration from the 1993 original Doom game, as well as Batman Year One and Star Wars to ensure the game doesn’t disappoint Doom‘s eager fanbase. With the game right around the corner with a summer release date, here’s everything you need to know.

Doom: The Dark Ages Gameplay

The new Doom game will of course follow the same format of the rest of the series, a single-player FPS involving adrenaline inducing bloody battles filled with gory animations and graphics.

While previous iterations took place in futuristic settings, Doom: The Dark Ages will draw on medieval imagery and the gore associated with the chains, ropes, spikes and torture devices of the time, with creative director Hugo Martin saying the time shift means that “we could get more dark and sinister with the tool kit”.

Imagery of the medieval era will also be present, with burning castle’s surrounded by beautiful pillars, aqueducts and defensive walls forming some of the battlegrounds in the game’s trailer.

Martin goes on to talk about how he wants to make players feel as though they are wielding the most powerful weapons so that players can feel as though they are an “Abrams tank” while battling their way through the game’s hordes of enemies.

Fans can expect fierce battle’s, dramatic animations and gut-wrenching injuries in the re-imagined Doom universe, combining all the fan-favourite quirks of the Doom series with a fresh creative angle.

Release Date and Consoles

Doom: The Dark Ages will be released on May 15, 2025, with the date being confirmed after the Xbox Developer Direct showcase in January that showed off the exciting new game for the first time.

The developers made a commitment to release the game at the same time on all available consoles, meaning that players on PC, Xbox Series X/S and PS5 will be able to get their hands on the game at the same time.
