The immensely popular western Red Dead Redemption 2 could be set for a Nintendo Switch 2 release later this year.
The news comes from an exclusive report from Gamereactor where a “source close to Rockstar” suggested that RDR2 may be joining the star studded cst of third-party Switch games.
Others include Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy VII and Elden Ring, while it looked like Red Dead Redemption 2 had missed the party Gamereactor’s sources suggest it could be making the highly anticipated move sooner than expected, with potential for a release later this year.
The game, released in 2018, has already been considerred one of the best games of all time bit Gamereactor calling it a “masterpiece” and an “instant classic”.
The Switch release is also reportedly coming in conjunction with a “next-gen upgrade patch”, brining the game’s graphics into line with current gen consoles PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and now the Nintendo Switch 2.
It is important to note that this is not set in stone, particularly due to Rockstar’s turbulent developmental history featuring numerous delays to the upcoming GTA 6 and its plans for porting GTA 4 to the Swtich 1.
Strauss Zelnick, the CEO of Take-Two, Red Dead Redemption 2’s developers, said the company has “great optimism” for Nintendo’s new console and the potential for future collaborations between the two companies.
Take-Two currently has four games set for a Switch 2 release: Borderlands 4, Sid Meier’s Civilisation 7 and popular sporting games NBA 2k and WWE 2k.
Zelnick claimed this is a “bigger array of releases than we’ve ever offered before with a new Nintendo platform.”
He continued: “Historically being a third-party in the Nintendo business has been a bit challenging. I think Nintendo’s been very forthcoming in addressing that, and we’re stepping up too because we have great optimism for the platform.”
Zelnick then commented on other potential games heading to Switch 2. “In terms of what we would bring to any platform, we address it on a case-by-case basis,” he said. “We obviously want to be where the consumers are. But we would not necessarily bring every title to every platform. There are also great catalogue opportunities as well.”
Eurogamer and Gamereactor believe that Red Dead Redemption 2 could well be one of those catalogue opportunities.
The Nintendo Switch 2 is set to hit shelves between July-September 2025, coming to most countries on June 5 with preorders having opened in April.
