Will a Recent Reliance on Legacy Characters Hold Back The Walking Dead’s Plans for Another 15 Years?

On 31 October 2010, audiences were treated to their first look at a post-apocalyptic, zombie-infested landscape through the eyes of Andrew Lincoln’s Rick Grimes. Having emerged from a barricaded hospital room, he stumbled out into the deserted world, soon to be mobbed by humans now looking to take a bite out of him.

A gripping first season ran into 11 seasons of the mainline show, eight seasons of its first spin-off, Fear the Walking Dead, two World Beyond seasons, one for Tales of the Walking Dead, and recently three spin-off shows that form around the core original cast. The Walking Dead clearly has more legs than even the walkers.

Celebrating 15 years of zombie television in 2025, we’ve had grand announcements for the ongoing shows, seen interest remain high beyond TV, and had the AMC Networks president announce that there’s even more to come.

A Continually Popular and Expanding Franchise

The Walking Dead has run riot on AMC for over a decade, even generating enough consistent popularity to warrant the promise of a TWD film trilogy, as hinted at in the trailer above. That film was reworked into the franchise’s sixth spin-off, adding a conclusion to the story of Rick Grimes. Even so, there are plenty of open ends.

AMC continues to meet fan demand with new TV shows. The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which took the titular character to Europe, will wrap up the famed biker’s story with Season 4, which began filming before Season 3 even finished airing. The hope is that it’ll enable a reunion between Daryl and Rick, but will be the spin-off’s final season.

Elsewhere, The Walking Dead: Dead City powers on and is currently filming its third run. In this case, an end is yet to be confirmed. Another spin-off has been announced, but beyond TV, demand for more Walking Dead remains high. Run by Heritage Auctions, a lot of 300 props from the franchise has received an absurd amount of interest.

Plus, the show has greatly grown its presence in another form of entertainment. Creating a new way to experience the characters of the show, The Walking Dead, The Walking Dead: Cash Collect, and The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live all feature prominently among the slots online UK players can find. Each is an official AMC product, created thanks to the enduring popularity of the show.

AMC Boss Sees Another 15 Years of TWD to Come

AMC Networks president Dan McDermott recently announced that The Walking Dead could yet go on for many more years. That’s not just as the name of a sprawling franchise, either. Speaking to how well Daryl Dixon has done with the story and filming in the EU, McDermott said, “There are many more continents to visit.”

He noted that they could “see [the main group of characters on stage] 15 years from now.” As they’ve done with their most recent spin-offs and even the slot games, AMC likes to run out their legacy characters as much as possible. Executive producer and writer Scott Gimple says that “[the locations] give the story to us.”

Diversifying through new locations and cultures can certainly help. The run in Paris was intriguing in the Daryl Dixon spin-off, for example. However, the franchise is so strong now that, with some good writing and maybe a few recognisable faces, a more detached spin-off from the main series seems perfectly viable.

Fans certainly continue to be drawn to the legacy characters across the many branches of The Walking Dead content. Yet, that won’t last forever. Being brave with a new setting and new characters, if done well, would prove to be a far more enriching pursuit for AMC.
