Chinese drama Pursuit of Jade is officially an international hit. Released on Netflix in early March, it already spent two weeks in the streamer’s charts for non-English shows. On top of that, it amassed 1.8 million views last week, making the Top 10 in nine countries.
While the generous episode count plays a part in the high viewership numbers, the series also delivers a captivating story that successfully blends action with romance. Does that mean more installments might be on the way?

What Is Pursuit of Jade About?
Pursuit of Jade is a historical romance mixed with political drama. Set in ancient China, it’s all about love, war, and revenge.
The story follows Fan Changyu, a strong-willed butcher’s daughter struggling to support her family. She crosses paths with Xie Zheng, a disgraced nobleman hiding his true identity while secretly looking to avenge a past wrong.
The two enter into a marriage of convenience. She needs protection, and he needs a cover to continue his investigation. However, their strategic arrangement gradually evolves into genuine love. Too bad the relationship is tested as political conspiracies and eventually full-scale war come into play.
As the show progresses, both characters are forced to confront their pasts and redefine their roles in a dangerous world. By the time the season wraps up, the couple reunites, concluding their arcs on a note that’s equal parts bittersweet and hopeful.
The series is based on a web novel, so Pursuit of Jade season 2 is unlikely. Still, the 40 episodes streaming do a great job at adapting the source material. Plus, in the era of reboots, a sequel is never really out of the question.
