From Flower Crowns to Full Glam: A Coachella Style Timeline

Style at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has evolved into a cultural phenomenon. When you think of Coachella you think of boho-chic icons like Vanessa Hudgens, but once defined by flower crowns and fringe, the festival’s aesthetic has shifted dramatically. The mid-2010s, shaped by Kylie Jenner, marked a move towards curated, social media-driven looks. In 2026, Coachella fashion feels more like a runway than a weekend retreat – blending nostalgia, Western influences, and meticulous styling. “Did you even go if you didn’t take a pic?”.

What was once effortless and free-spirited is now experimental, trend-driven, and influenced by the internet. Coachella has become a trendsetting stage, and we’re looking back at the avant-garde styles that defined each era of the festival, just in time for Coachella 2026.

The Boho-Chic Spirit of the 2010s

With the 2010s’ bohemian charm, this sun-bleached messy hair era saw Tumblr as a Coachella essential. Bathed in flower crowns, fringe and crochet pieces, Vanessa Hudgens embodied the indie, boho-chic identity of Coachella. Frequently barefoot in the grass and in layered jewellery, Vanessa Hudgens became the face of Coachella in the 2010s, sparking the carefree, free-spirited essence of the Californian festival.

The ‘King Kylie’ Era

From 2015 to 2017, Coachella festival fashion began to shift, the line between music festival and fashion show started to fade, and Coachella style went from indie to influencer, in which celebrities such as Kylie Jenner had a hand in. The ‘King Kylie’ era was all about effortlessly bold looks. Think blue hair, space buns, chokers, wide-brimmed hats, fishnets, pastels and layers of body chains. Crop tops, coordinated outfits, and matching outfits with your bestie replaced the laid-back boho vibe, making the Coachella style way more curated and photo-ready, where social media was a huge driver.

Present Influencer Culture

After the “King Kylie” era, the Coachella festival crowd pivoted and started leaning further into influencer culture. More brand deals and more Instagram-ready looks meant less creativity and individualism. These fully styled outfits that screamed “photo op” took a Western aesthetic route with cowboy hats, boots, bandanas, denim and diamonds, and even cow print making a statement. Now, in the current era, festival fashion keeps evolving. Through mixing old trends with fresh experiments, Coachella is still the ultimate runway for celebrities, influencers, fashion enthusiasts and regional and international music fans.
