Destroy Boys Enlist Mannequin Pussy and Scowl for New Song ‘You Hear Yes’

Today, Sacramento punk outfit Destroy Boys have dropped their fourth album, Funeral Soundtrack #4, through Hopeless Records. It includes a collaboration with Scowl’s Kat Moss and Mannequin Pussy’s Marisa Dabice called ‘You Hear Yes’, which you can hear below.

“It’s funny because we always used to get labeled as a feminist punk band, but we don’t actually sing about that very often,” the band’s Alexia Roditi shared in press materials. “So on this record we wanted to make a very blatant fuck-the-patriarchy song.”

Mannequin Pussy released their most recent LP, I Got Heaven, earlier this year. Scowl’s most recent release was last year’s Psychic Dance Routine EP.

When is Alice in Borderland Set to Return?

It is official that the highly anticipated third season of Alice in Borderland is on the way. Netflix confirmed the renewal of the fantasy series in 2023 but hasn’t announced the release date yet.

The Japanese offering is one of the latest works to be inspired by Lewis Carrol’s legendary 1865 novel. There have been various other recent titles that have used these themes to good effect as well.

Wonderland Themes Continue in Mainstream

It’s amazing to think that a book that was made more than 150 years ago can still have an effect on popular culture, but themes from Carroll’s works are still going strong in today’s entertainment market. One of the best examples of this is Adventures Beyond Wonderland, a live casino spinning wheel offering. The title features various prizes and special segments, and players bet on each spin.

There have been various other adaptations and works that took inspiration from the iconic fantasy book in diverse areas of entertainment over the years. For instance, Jefferson Airplane’s White Rabbit drew heavily on the surreal elements of the story and became an anthem of the 1960s counterculture. There was also the white rabbit analogy in The Matrix, with Neo following it on his path to escaping the computerised simulation that he was trapped in.

Renewed for a Third Season

Alice in Borderland takes a lot of inspiration from Carrol’s imagination, but also brings many of its own ideas to the table. The offering written by Yoshiki Watabe, Yasuko Kuramitsu, and Shinsuke Sato is clearly influenced by other works, especially those in the survival genre such as Battle Royale and Cube.

When the first season was released on Netflix in 2020, it quickly amassed a cult following. It was also praised by critics, who noted how it used Carrol’s ideas as a framework but then went off in plenty of its own unique directions. Season two was released in 2022 and garnered similar praise, leading to the announcement of season three in 2023.

According to the latest reports, the upcoming season of Alice in Borderland has finished production. That means that it could potentially stay in line with its usual release schedule of every two years and drop in 2024. However, there’s also a chance that it ends up on the platform in 2025.

Series Up There With Top Foreign-Language Offerings

Netflix has emerged as the number one streaming platform for foreign-language television series, with some incredible hits over the last few years. Alice in Borderland is one of many hugely popular shows, with the likes of Money Heist and Squid Game up there with it.

Indeed, the success of these offerings was unprecedented, which is why Netflix is encouraged to make more seasons. With dubbing and subtitles available, they help Netflix garner appeal in markets around the world.

The good news is that Alice in Borderland is set to return. The bad news is that nobody knows when that will be yet. There’s a chance that it could be released in 2024, but 2025 is currently looking more likely.

Interview: Greg Mike

Greg Mike is a modern artist known for his distinctive characters, bold street art, mural paintings, and Loudmouf icon, which blends vibrant designs with pop culture. A number of murals have been painted by him in Atlanta, Miami, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and the Swiss Alps. To talk about his work and his upcoming solo show at the new ABV Gallery, Greg Mike joined us for an interview.

Can you tell us what visitors can expect at the new ABV Gallery in East Atlanta this fall and how it will differ from your original gallery in the Old 4th Ward?

Over the past 4 years, I’ve been designing and developing the space to be like something never seen before.  The possibilities are endless. From massive sculptures to murals to installations, anything is possible.  Our old space was only 1500 square feet and the new space is 8500.  With that being said, larger walls for bigger canvases, more space for multi-sensory exhibitions and events and more.  We loved the last 15 years in our first location, but we’ve just unlocked a new level to fulfill and push our creative dreams.  The space will feature a retail shop, a bar, a massive gallery room, annex galleries, my private painting studio, our design studio for ABV AGENCY, and exterior walls for murals. Your upcoming solo show at the new ABV Gallery is a retrospective of 15 years of your work. How did you select the pieces to be featured, and what story do you aim to tell through this exhibition?

All the pieces for the show will be new unreleased work.  In terms of a retrospective, it’s more from a stylistic standpoint, where I am inspired by different styles and moments from the last 15 years of my career.  It will feature paintings, sculptures, limited edition prints, vinyl figures, merch, and more.  I am utilizing a number of different mediums and styles to create this new body of work.  The story is ongoing and I’m constantly building off the pieces I’ve created before it.  My work is always pushing positivity and expressions of thoughts and emotions through colors and characters.

You’ve worked on some fantastic mural pieces. What has been your most challenging mural project to date, and how did you overcome its challenges?

I think one of the most challenging pieces was when I painted a 6 story building in Midtown Atlanta.  The height of the building wasn’t the only challenge. The most difficult aspect of the building was that it was only accessible by a 60ft boom lift that needed to be threaded through an alleyway.  One wrong move of the control switches and I would have smashed into the neighboring building.  There was only about an 8ft gap between the buildings to thread lift between. I was terrified and shaking the whole time while painting and imaging a car slamming into the lift to send me flying in the air.  I think due to being tense and stressed while painting I threw my back out while picking up a can off the basket floor.  I had to take a few days off as I could hardly walk, let alone paint.  I pushed through and got it done, but definitely one of the most challenging installations to date.

Regarding street art, what do you see as the role of street art and public art in today’s society, particularly in urban environments?

Street art has the most incredible way of positively transforming a city. Art makes people happy, it makes people think and can really beautify blank and boring concrete brick walls.  I’ve often heard people tell me they look forward to hopping in their cars on the way home from work and passing a mural as it puts a smile on their face when seeing the bright colors and positive messages. I think there’s a lot of developments that all look the same and adding the element of public art really gives it character and adds a ton of value to the landscape of a community.  It’s great seeing commercial developers incorporate murals into their projects.  Over the past few years we’ve seen a shift with the architects designing spaces made for murals from the infancy stages of a project.  This is truly special and something I’d love to see more of globally.

Your work often incorporates bold colours and energetic characters. What inspires the aesthetic choices in your art?

It’s all based on feelings, a lot of those that are in my mind and I can’t communicate just with words alone.  They need to come out and the easiest way for me to convey them is through my colors and characters. I love adding a touch of nostalgic elements to my work that people can relate to, which brings them back to a place and time of happiness in their lives.  At the end of the day I want to create positive art that inspires and makes people happy.  If I can inspire just one person or change someone’s mood for a moment then it’s a win in my book.

Finally, if you could give some words of advice to aspiring artists, what would it be?

I think the biggest thing I can say is to keep going. There’s no secret formula and it’ll take a decade to become an overnight success.  Create work daily, put it out there and be part of the art community.  As long as you put in the hours to develop your style it will all work out.  The timing right now couldn’t be better for artists and commissions with murals, collaboration projects, and the internet.  You just need to start and be relentless and keep creating.  Don’t worry about your style or what you’re known for as this will just come with time.  You will keep things you like that work and stray away from things that don’t.  I’ve had tons of hurtles or times when I could have thrown in the towel and thought I’d never make it, but I knew I was doing what I loved and kept pushing forward.  Work hard, Stay Humble and most importantly, enjoy the ride.

Next week, the Killers will kick off their residency at Las Vegas’ the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, where they will be performing Hot Fuss in full in honour of the album’s 20th anniversary.

Last year, the band released a greatest hits album, Rebel Diamonds, which featured a previously unreleased song called ‘Spirit’. Their last studio LP was 2021’s Pressure Machine.

Katy Perry Shares Video for New Single ‘Lifetimes’

Katy Perry has followed up ‘Woman’s World’ with ‘Lifetimes’, the second single from her upcoming album 143. “Dr. Luke” Gottwald and Vaughn Oliver produced the song, which arrives with a music video directed by Stillz. Check it out below.

“‘Lifetimes’ is a song about eternal love,” Perry said in a press release. “I wrote it with my good friend and long-time collaborator Sarah Hudson, along with the incredible Vaughn Oliver. It’s about finding that one deep and satisfying love of your life. Personally, I don’t think a soulmate will always come in the form of a partner. It can come in all different ways, a child, a best friend, a pet. You’ll find each other, over and over again, for lifetimes.” Dr. Luke, Lunchmoney Lewis, Rocco Valdes, Ryan Ogren, and Theron Thomas are also credited as a co-writers. Oliver and Dr. Luke produced.

Chrystabell and David Lynch Share New Video for ‘Two Lovers Kiss’

Chrystabell and David Lynch have shared a new video for ‘Two Lovers Kiss’, a track from their recently released album Cellophane Memories. Following the Lynch-directed clips for early singles ‘Sublime Eternal Love’ and ‘The Answers To The Questions’, the new visual was directed by Eden Tijerina. Watch it below.

Tijerina shared the following statement about the video:

Every video I make aims to articulate an emotion—a mix of beauty and melancholy that sticks with the audience. But if anyone could see it in the making- nude, wet, shivering … —they’d know it’s certainly not glamorous, but it never needs to be. As long as we get the shot. I’m my own worst critic, but we were blessed with ideal situations which led to amazing shots, all organic with diegetic lighting. When editing, I chose to leave the sprocket hole and other “imperfections” as an artistic statement about decay, the grassroots nature of the production, or the passage of time. I think of any defects in the film like a tear in the fabric of reality, a glimpse into the back rooms of the world, being a kid and holding mirrors to each other, or turning the camcorder connected to the TV back at the screen, accidentally glimpsing the infinite in those uncanny feedback loops and left with persistent unease that you have acquired an unsheddable curse. Anyway, If I was ever going to use a perfect shot of the full totality of a once-in-a-lifetime eclipse on Super 8 film, it would be for my dear friend Chrystabell and the legendary David Lynch.

Chrystabell added:

Director Eden Tijerina chose the understated majesty of rural Oregon for her hazy yet shimmering vision for the music video of “Two Lovers Kiss” to transpire. We collected unfurling moments of sunset worship, rising full moons, and night forest bathing. It seems that nature enjoys being in front of her lens. As do I. Undulating spasms of 8mm film add a bardic tension to the pastoral serenity. The ephemeral quality that permeates this video is something like the print of poetry fading on well read pages. Tijerina aligns moments fluttering at the edge of rapture with the enveloping soporific dark glimmer of the song, rife with quiet wonder and sensual melancholy.

Lia Kohl Releases New Single ‘Ignition, Sneakers’

Lia Kohl has released a new track called ‘Ignition, Sneakers’. It’s taken from the Chicago-based composer and cellist’s forthcoming record Normal Sounds, following last month’s ‘Car Alarm, Turn Signal’. Listen below.

‘Ignition, Sneakers’ is built off a recording of a repetitive beep indicating keys in the ignition when opening the car door. “I took this recording in an old van in northern Wisconsin – it took me a while to find a car that had that old-style resonant sound; I don’t have a car myself so I had to ask several friends,” Kohl shared. “It’s a pretty bizarre thing to ask ‘can I record your car?’. The van belongs to ACRE, an artist residency in Steuben, WI, where I was in residence last summer. You can hear the birds singing around the van at the end of the track. In making this record, I’m interested in the fact that a lot of these sounds are just synthesizer sounds, created for a specific purpose. In this case, it just plays one note. The tempo made me feel like it would make a good energetic, almost dance-y tune.”
