This Week’s Best New Songs: Mount Eerie, H.C. McEntire, Debby Friday, and More

Throughout the week, we update our Best New Songs playlist with the new releases that caught our attention the most, be it a single leading up to the release of an album or a newly unveiled deep cut. And each Monday, we round up the best new songs released over the past week (the eligibility period begins on Monday and ends Sunday night) in this best new music segment.

The best songs that came out in the first week of 2023 include ‘Jerking Off the Sky’, the apocalyptic centerpiece of Fireworks’ new album Higher Lonely Power (surprised-released on New Year’s Day, so technically a day too late to be eligible, but still worth highlighting); Mount Eerie’s ‘Huge Fire’, a slow-burning track that persists through turbulent waves of percussion and thick bass; ‘SO HARD TO TELL’, the striking and reflective lead offering from Toronto-based artist Debby Friday’s debut LP; H.C. McEntire’s ‘Rows of Clover’, a moving and tenderly vulnerable song about the loss of a “steadfast hound”; ‘The Regency’, the brash, dynamic closer of Iggy Pop’s new album Every Loser; Nicole Dollanganger’s ’Married in Mount Airy’, which introduces her new album of the same name in all its ghostly beauty; and the latest from NewJeans, the infectious and exuberant ‘OMG’.
