Albums Out Today: Primal Scream, The Slaps, The Body, Ab-Soul, and More

In this segment, we showcase the most notable albums out each week. Here are the albums out on November 8, 2024:

    Primal Scream, Come Ahead

Primal Scream have returned with their first album in eight years. Come Ahead, the follow-up to Chaosmosis, was produced by David Holmes and the band’s Bobby Gillespie and Andrew Innes. “I’m very excited about this album in a way that you would be making your first record,” Gillespie said in a statement. “If there was an overall theme to Come Ahead it might be one of conflict, whether inner or outer. The title is a Glaswegian term. If someone threatens to fight you, you say, ‘come ahead!’ It’s redolent of the indomitable spirit of the Glaswegian, and the album itself shares that aggressive attitude and confidence. They have a word for this up there, gallus. Come Ahead’s quite a cheeky title too.”

    The Slaps, Mudglimmer

The Slaps — the Chicago DIY group composed of guitarist Rand Kelly, bassist Ramsey Bell, and drummer Josh Resing — have released their latest album, Mudglimmer. The LP, which includes the early singles ‘Compromised Dirt’ (featuring Lunar Vacation and Merce Lemon), ‘Fool’, and ‘Flip’, was primarily recorded at Hummingbird Recordings in Atlanta by Ben Wulkan and Evan Dangerfield. It follows 2023’s Pathless, an entirely improvised collection recorded at the legendary Experimental Sound Studio in Chicago, as well as This is My First Day At Drawing, which leaned toward traditional folk and country songwriting.

The Body, The Crying Out of Things

Following their collaborative LP with Berlin-based singer/producer Dis Fig, heavy music duo the Body are back with an album of their own. Singer/guitarist Chip King and percussionist/electronics-wizard Lee Buford made The Crying Out of Things with Seth Manchester at his Machines with Magnets studio in Rhode Island. Dis Fig guests on the album, along with vocalist Ben Eberle and horn player Dan Blacksburg. “I think for us the key to the way we use noise is, it’s not the only element,” Buford explained. “You’ve gotta really listen if you’re into noise. But it also has to have dynamics. Where, say, BIG|BRAVE (who have a similar ethos) expresses it in this more intellectual, minimalist way, The Body comes from an instinctual, maximalist way. We’re trying to cover it ALL.”

    Ab-Soul, Soul Burger

Soul Burger is the latest project from Top Dawg Entertainment rapper Ab-Soul. The mixtape serves as a tribute to the artist’s late friend DoeBurger, who passed away in December 2021. Spanning 15 tracks, it features guest contributions from Vince Staples, Ty Dolla $ign, JID, Lupe Fiasco, Doechii, JasonMartin, Thirsty P, Kamm Carson, Fre$H, Punch, Blxst, and Asia Holiday, as well as production from the likes of 9th Wonder, ScHoolBoy Q, Kal Banx, Terrace Martin, Rascal, TaeBeast, Devin Malik, and Beat Butcha.

FERG (fka A$AP Ferg) has put out Darold, his first project since 2020’s Floor Seats II. the 12-track project was previewed by the singles ‘Allure’ with Future and Mike WiLL Made-It and ‘Thought I Was Dead’.
