Seeing those checkered flags and getting that rush of adreneline as you narrowly squeeze past yet another racer may be more difficult on a Mac than it is on console or on a Windows device, but that’s not to say its impossible.
Whether you’re looking for a high-stakes racer, a story driven cinematic experience, or a casual night of fun with friends and family, below you can find the best of the best on Mac.
1. Grid Legends
A cult classic in the arcade racer genre Grid Legends combines beautiful graphics and iconic locations with a wide variety of game modes, single and multiplayer capabilities, and the chance to make your own races. That’s right, if you want to race a semi-truck against a supercar, you can.
The arcade style of the game and it’s ability to host up to 21 racers across various platforms makes it the perfect pick up and play option for the average racing fan.
2. Dirt 4
While the most recent iteration of the Dirt franchise is not currently available on Mac, the fourth game in the critically acclaimed series is more than worth your time.
With five maps that offer millions of route options, a career mode that allows you to build your own racer, and a range of single player modes including time trials, classic course races and free-play, Dirt 4 offers any avid off-roader the chance to push their abilities to the absolute max.
3. Asphalt Legends Unite
A 2019 release still recieving major game-changing updates is rare, but Asphalt Legends Unite (formerly Asphalt 9: Legends) already ticks that box after its expansion update in 2024.
The Asphalt series prides itself on its unique control mechanics which allows players to preform incredible stunts, pushing your car and your abilities beyond just your lap time.
4. F1 2017
While the hugely popular F1 series stopped being accessible to Mac users in 2018, the older games remain some of the best racing simulation games out there.
While most of this list (and Mac’s racing portfolio in general) focus on arcade style racers, F1 2017 is a fanatic’s dream thanks to its realism, the first few races will be difficult and even as a beginner you are not spared the failure this brings with it, but overtime as you develop as a driver, there’s little more satisfying than a win.
5. MXGP3
Switching from four wheels to two, MXGP3 offers all the thrills, danger and intricacies of motocross. Having to learn the knack of clutch control, scrubbing and weight distribution, is not for the feint hearted, but like F1, once you master them, there’s nothing like the noise of an engine revving and the dust flying.
