Meet Pantone’s Mocha Mousse: Fall’s New Neutral

According to Pantone, the global ruler of fashion’s color palette and the current market trends, our mothers might have been right all along. I remember watching mine get dressed in all-brown, wondering how she could find such simple tones appealing. Turns out, shades of brown are far from boring, especially this season’s favorite, Mocha Mousse. And designers seem to agree. From fast-fashion to couture houses, from street style to celebrity wardrobes, chocolate tones are taking over this Fall.

After months of vivid and intense trends, a turn to soft living was much needed. And it came at the right moment, with leaves falling, hot coffee brewing, cinnamon in the air and freshly lit fireplaces, there’s an instinctive need to feel one with our environment, such a grounding feeling. But brown is grounding by its nature. Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, captured its effect perfectly: “For Pantone Color of the Year, 2025, we look to a mellow brown hue whose inherent richness and sensorial and comforting warmth extends further into our desire for comfort, and the indulgence of simple pleasures that we can gift and share with others.” It’s a shade redefining simplicity, a reminder to slow down and reconnect.

Think buttery leathers, wool blends, fine knits and soft silk. Smoother than chocolate brown and livelier than beige, Mocha Mousse is the new nude. It’s the perfect base color for layering and monochrome looks, without ever feeling one-dimensional. When mixed with soft whites and creams, it radiates a minimal, clean and luxurious sense. Combined with terracotta and camel, it brings deeper warmth and earthiness. Mixed with dusty pink and gray, it takes on a romantic tone, but my personal favorite pairing is blue, in every shade, especially royal. And when finished with gold accessories, it adds just the right touch of timeless allure.

Mocha Mousse isn’t just a seasonal favorite, it’s a deeply-human return to calmness and grace. A color that reminds us that taste doesn’t need to shout to be seen. It’s about warmth, balance and the kind of beauty that feels organic. This fall, less really is more. Maybe that’s why we keep coming back to it.
