‘The Boys’ Prequel Vought Rising: Release Date, Cast, Plot, and More

The highly anticipated Season 5 of The Boys may have wrapped the story of Butcher’s war against the supes for good, but there’s still plenty of unfinished business buried deep in Vought’s past. Prime Video and showrunner Eric Kripke are going back to where it all started with Vought Rising, an upcoming prequel TV series set in the 1950s that will explore how Vought came into power and how the earliest supes helped shape the world that followed. Billed as a “twisted murder mystery” by Kripke, The Boys prequel series will be led by Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash, who return as Soldier Boy and Stormfront, respectively.

The prequel series won’t follow the exact same formula we’ve seen in The Boys or Gen V and instead opens things up into a 1950s-set mystery with the franchise’s usual brutality layered in, while digging into Vought’s earliest experiments with Compound V and the messy, unpredictable chaos that came with building the first generation of Supes. With filming already wrapped and first-look images and casting details slowly trickling, here’s everything we currently know about Vought Rising, from its release date and story to cast, trailers, and more.

Vought Rising: Release Date

While Prime Video has not locked in a concrete release date yet, Vought Rising is currently expected to hit the streaming service sometime in 2027. According to showrunner Eric Kripke, the longer wait is largely due to the scale of post-production, with visual effects work expected to run into late 2026 before the series can move through Amazon’s global rollout. Speaking to Collider, Kripke confirmed that Vought Rising will arrive in 2027, though it may not be pushed too far into the calendar.

“I have no idea when, but at some point next year,” Kripke said, adding that early cuts are already in strong shape. “I’ve seen cuts through Episode 7, I think, at this point, and they’re good. It’s really coming together. I think people are gonna dig it.” He also made it clear that the delay is purely logistical. “There was never any thought of releasing it this year. It’s not so much about the marketing plan as much as it’s gonna take us eight months to just even finish all the VFX. So, we’re not going to be done until November, December at the earliest anyway, and then Amazon needs time to localize it to all the different markets.”

Vought Rising: Cast

The cast of Vought Rising will feature a mix of returning heavyweights and a steadily expanding lineup of new additions, all set against the backdrop of Vought’s rise in the 1950s. Leading the series are Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash, who also serve as producers while reprising their roles as Soldier Boy and Stormfront (Clara Vought).

Alongside them, the series features a packed ensemble that includes Will Hochman, Elizabeth Posey, Jorden Myrie, Nicolò Pasetti, Ricky Staffieri, Brian J. Smith, Mason Dye, and KiKi Layne as series regulars. Dye’s role also connects directly to the main series, as he is set to appear in The Boys Season 5 as Bombsight, though his full arc in the prequel remains under wraps. The lineup continues to grow with additional appearances from Cecily Strong, Mark Pellegrino, Eric Johnson, Annie Shapero, Raphael Sbarge, Romi Shraiter, Aaron Douglas, and David Hewlett.

Here’s the current expected cast for Vought Rising:

  • Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy
  • Aya Cash as Stormfront (Clara Vought)

What Will Vought Rising Be About?

Prime Video is keeping the plot for Vought Rising fairly close to the chest and hasn’t shared a full official synopsis yet, but based on what the cast and creators have said so far, we already have a pretty clear idea of where the story will be headed. Per Eric Kripke and showrunner Paul Grellong, Vought Rising is “a twisted murder mystery about the origins of Vought in the 1950s, the early exploits of Soldier Boy, and the diabolical maneuvers of a Supe known to fans as Stormfront, who was then going by the name Clara Vought.”

This is a version of Vought that’s still chaotic, experimental, and far from the corporate powerhouse we’re used to seeing, so don’t be surprised to see unstable Supes, failed experiments, and plenty of cover-ups as the company struggles to keep its early mistakes under wraps. The story will also spend time with a much younger version of Jensen Ackles’ Soldier Boy, long before he became the bitter, battle-hardened Super that fans came to know.

Speaking to Deadline, Ackles talked about the challenge of stepping back into that version of the character, explaining, “It was exciting, and it was a little bit more challenging because I felt like I’d gotten to know modern day Soldier Boy pretty well and had him kind of dialed in. And then it kind of stripped a lot of that away to tell the story of how he was back then, before a lot of the shit had happened. You’ll definitely see the modern day Soldier Boy, he’s in there. But you kind of get the sense of seeing why certain elements of his personality took over more.”

We’ll also get to see more of Aya Cash as Clara Vought, years before she takes on the Stormfront identity, working from deep inside Vought while the company experiments with some of its earliest Compound V trials. Showrunner Paul Grellong has described the series as a darker look at Vought’s beginnings, with a murder mystery pulling apart the secrets and cover-ups buried inside the company’s early rise. Eric Kripke has also talked about how the elements from The Boys are already laying the groundwork for the prequel.

In an interview with TV Insider, Kripke said, “It’s like a little bit of a teaser on Vought Rising, but it’s not so much about the location as it is about the stories that you hear about all the different characters, like Soldier Boy’s rivalry with his brother, for example, or when you meet him in Vought Rising, he’s not like this tough, cocky, devil may care guy, he’s a much more green version of Soldier Boy that everyone frankly rolls their eyes at because he’s the rich kid who bought his way into the program, whereas everyone else was really seasoned military.”

He went on to add, saying “And also the notion that the trial and error and the death and destruction that Vought caused on his way to making those four super soldiers, and then as it evolves into creating what we know the V as we know it today, and the trail of bodies he left behind, that’s an important setup as well. So it was fun. We tried to do it in a way that was just important to this particular episode. And every season we’re talking about Compound V, where did it come from, how did it start, what really is its origins, and that’s just interesting in and of itself, but it also helps kind of tease Vought Rising.”

Is There A Trailer For Vought Rising?

As of writing, Prime Video hasn’t released any trailer of sorts for Vought Rising.

Are There Any Other Shows Like Vought Rising?

If Vought Rising has you interested in more twisted superhero stories, the best place to start is still The Boys itself, since the prequel directly connects to the origins of Vought, Compound V, Soldier Boy, and Stormfront. If you’ve already made your way through that, Gen V is the next easy recommendation.

Outside of The Boys universe, Peacemaker is worth checking out if you enjoy the more ridiculous, darkly funny side of superhero stories. You should also check out Invincible, or if you want something closer to Gen V’s messy young-superpowered-chaos vibe, Misfits is another a great pick.
