Sad13, the project of Speedy Ortiz’s Sadie Dupuis, has a new project on the way. It’s a mixtape called 1331, which features 13 “1 minute long-ish songs,” three of which are out today: ‘Am Now Completely Invisible’, ‘Art Institute’, ‘Watermelon Manicure’. Take a listen below.
The mixtape, which follows 2020’s Haunted Painting, is due July 10 via Exploding in Sound. “1331 signifies palindromes, mirrors, warped balance,” Dupuis explained in a statement. “It’s a mash-up of two ages in the lyrics. The first, as in my alias ‘sad thirteen,’ represents teenage moodiness, while thirty-one bookmarks young adulthood, which brought me more radical clarity.”
Dupuis wrote, recorded, and performed the album in its entirety, playing electric, baritone, and acoustic guitar as well as bass, piano, synths, organ, percussion, and more. In June of 2024, however, she was injured in a bicycle accident that shattered her elbow, requiring both reconstructive surgeries and a year of rehab. “My body didn’t have the juice,” she commented. “But tracking in little bursts over more time gave me broader influences.”
