James Ellis Ford used to be one half of Simian Mobile Disco, and you might know him as a producer behind records by Arctic Monkeys, Florence + the Machine, Fontaines D.C., and more. Today, he announces his signing to Domino Records and the release of a new album, Lost in Another World, on August 14. Listen to the hypnotic new single ‘Overtones’ below.
Ford made the album over two weeks in early 2025 while he was in the hospital between rounds of chemotherapy following a diagnosis of myeloid leukemia (AML), an aggressive cancer of the white blood cells. Sereen, his wife, bought him a fold-away IKEA bedside table to put some synths on; staff at the hospital got used to taking his blood pressure while he was laying down tracks. “There was no filter,” Ford recalled. “I just sang the first thing that came into my head into the laptop.”
“It was a pep talk; I was telling myself I was going to be OK,” he continued. “It was one way of dealing with the existential dread I felt. It gave me the ammunition to fight the experience and was a distraction from it.”
Earlier this year, Ford executive produced the War Child benefit compilation HELP(2).
