King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard have announced a new album, Alien Metal. Set for release “later in the summer,” it’s billed as the band’s foray into electronic dance music, because why not? The follow-up to Phantom Island was written and recorded using the modular synth set-up the band took on the road last year. “It completely rewired my brain,” Stu Mackenzie said of the Eurorack synthesizer format. “I was like, ‘I’m going to forget everything I know about music and relearn it all from scratch.'”
“We’ve never scrapped so much material as we have for this album,” Mackenzie added. “Entire albums, entire universes that were formulated, created, recorded, deleted and started again.”
“Alien Metal goes really hard, but it also goes to really interesting places,” commented Joey Walker, described as the “techno head of the group.” “And it feels unique – it feels like us, still.”
