What Is Conversations with a Killer: The Charles Manson Tapes About?

Directed by Joe Berlinger, the documentary series revisits the murders committed by members of the Manson Family. It’s the last entry in the franchise.

“As we bring Conversations with a Killer to a close, I wanted our final season to focus on the figure who, more than anyone else, ushered in the modern era of America’s fascination with true crime,” Berlinger told Netflix.

The show uses prison calls, archival footage, firsthand accounts, and interviews with people connected to Manson and his entourage. Besides examining the crimes, it zooms in on the psychological hold Manson exerted over his followers.

Plus, The Charles Manson Tapes offers context by detailing Manson’s rise to power among young people searching for belonging. It also touches on his increasingly apocalyptic beliefs and the high-profile murder trial.

While there don’t seem to be any plans for Conversations with a Killer: The Charles Manson Tapes season 2, the three episodes available paint a full picture of the case. They also feature previously unreleased recordings of Manson, which is likely to draw in true crime enthusiasts.
