This Is Lorelei, The Singer in My Band
This Is Lorelei has released his first album for Matador, The Singer in My Band. Embracing a twangier style, the follow-up to 2024’s Box for Buddy, Box for Star is framed as an “on-the-road beatnik” album, as first described by Nate Amos’ dad, bluegrass musician Bob Amos. Amos’ dad provides the only feature on the album, playing banjo on the title track; other than that, the singer-songwriter engineered, produced, and performed everything on the record himself. “It’s really a collection of chaotic experiences that you have while travelling,” he explained. “They’re also very much little works of fiction with elements of truth to them.”
Sylvan Esso, Ow ∞
Sylvan Esso are back with their first album in four years. Restless and punchier than previous efforts, Ow ∞, the follow-up to No Rules Sandy, marks the duo’s debut release on their own own Psychic Hotline label, which they launched back in 2018. “One of my favorite ways of producing in general is to come up with an idea and then take out a third of it,” Amelia Meath commented in a press release. “One, it makes things interesting and exciting, but also it makes your ear ask a question. And it kind of forces the listener to be creative as well. To try to fill that space with something, which I find as a listener to be really exciting and interesting. Particularly with pop music, because it’s all about fulfilling a promise. You know this melodic structure, you know, we’re going to the four here. Like, not doing it is always the thing that makes people fall inlove with a song or a person.”
Angela Autumn, Believer
Angela Autumn has come through with a thrilling and bracingly vulnerable record called Believer. An indie country record with gothic and psychedelic edges, it follows the singer-songwriter’s full-length debut, Frontiers Woman, as well as the 2023 EP Cowboy Jack Clementine. “I wanted to merge different aspects of myself,” she said in press materials. “A lot of my friends are dancers, strippers, and body workers, and I like making music they can move their body to. With Believer, I wanted to make something with more attitude.” She added, “I like to put myself in extreme situations in order to write. That’s how I wrote songs like ‘Jesus Heist’ and ‘In the South’: by leaving everything behind and going into nature. Without the earth, I probably wouldn’t have any music.”
The Tubs, Hard Life
Hard Life, The Tubs’ third studio LP and first with Merge Records, is full of knottily confessional and infectiously jangly pop songs. The London-based band of Owen Williams, Dan Lucas, Taylor Stewart, and Max Warren are joined on the record by frequent collaborators Chris Haigh (fiddle), McArdle (vocals), George Nicholls (guitar), and Rachel Kenedy (keyboards). “I’m interested in the way sympathy and patience for someone suffering always runs out eventually,” Williams reflected. “How this can be a good and liberating thing as well as a sad and brutal thing. But mostly they’re just pop songs.”
Sorcha Richardson, Draw the Outline
Irish singer-songwriter Sorcha Richardson has released a warmly reflective new album, Draw the Outline. The follow-up to 2022’s Smiling Like an Idiot was produced by Chris W Ryan (Chalk, Just Mustard, New Dad). “A lot of my previous stuff is me observing other people’s conversations, or me observing my conversations with other people,” Richardson explained. “A lot of this album is me observing my conversations within my own head,” she says. “There’s a surreal, dream-like quality to it. It moves between me here in the room with you now and then, all of the things that my brain is throwing up to me; fears, memories, imagined outcomes.”
