The Tom Petty Estate has announced a new box set, Origins 1971-1978, to celebrate the band’s 50th birthday. The 5xLP collection is set for release on November 6. It serves as a comprehensive document of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ early years around its formation in 1976, including seven previously unreleased songs. One of them, ‘Parade of Loons’, is out today alongside a video starring Young Sheldon‘s Iain Armitage. Check it out below.
The box set will feature the rarities collection No Sleep Til L.A., which spans Petty’s work from his older band Mudcrutch to the earliest days of the Heartbreakers; that one’s also getting a standalone release. Also included are newly remastered versions of the band’s self-titled debut album as well as its 1978 follow-up You’re Gonna Get It!. Live From The Record Plant 1977, a recording of the band’s live broadcast from for San Francisco’s KSAN-FM at the Record Plant in Sausalito, will be released in its entirety for the first time. There’s also another rarities collection, The Cut Out Bin, featuring tracks that Petty made with session musicians. Completing the set is a live-album version of the band’s 1978 performance on the BBC’s The Old Grey Whistle Test.
Today’s announcement is tied to the Heartbreakers reunion at tonight’s Americana Awards, where the band will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. Surviving members Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch, and Ron Blair are set to perform with country star Chris Stapleton, while two other Heartbreakers, Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston, will join for the final song.
