Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner Announces New Book ‘Thank You for Your Suffering’

Michelle Zauner, who records music as Japanese Breakfast, has announced a new book called Thank You for Your Suffering. It follows the singer-songwriter and author’s New York Times bestselling 2021 memoir Crying in H Mart. According a press release, it documents a “deeply personal journey through the heart of South Korea, and charts Zauner’s dream of learning her mother’s native language in hopes of being able to read the diary she left behind, and to connect with her family in Seoul.” Check out the book’s cover below.

Thank You for Your Suffering is set for release on April 27, 2027, via Knopf. In an interview with ELLE, Zauner discussed the book and its relationship to her authorial debut. “It felt like I spent all this time learning about Korean food and writing about that, and it just wasn’t enough,” she said. “It made me suddenly really want to go further in connecting to that part of my mom’s history and who she was as a person, and so I really regretted not learning the language, and I felt quite embarrassed about it. I was really curious: If I did spend a year there, how much could I learn?”

Last year, Zauner returned with a new Japanse Breakfast album, For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women).
