Angine de Poitrine have won this year’s Polaris Music Prize. The viral math-rock duo took home the award for the best Canadian album of the year for Vol. II, beating out records by Beverly Glenn-Copeland, Peaches, Rochelle Jordan, Charlotte Cornfield, and Tanya Tagaq. The album track ‘Fabienk’ was also named the best Canadian song of the year, making them the first act to win both awards, which, combined, come with $40,000 Canadian in prize money.
“That all this attention is being directed toward music this rock-driven and this complex is unexpected, yet entirely deserved,” the band’s manager, Sébastien Collin, said in his acceptance speech at Toronto’s Massey Hall, adding: “This artistic project is the result of a lifetime of refinement, collaboration, a drive to push beyond one’s limits, and a refusal to be confined by any established framework.”
Last year, the Polaris Music Prize went to Yves Jarvis for All Cylinders.
