Knifeplay have announced their first album since 2022’s Animal Drowning. The Philadelphia band’s third LP, What Is Truth?, arrives January 22 on Double Double Whammy. Today’s announcement comes with the release of the tenderly poignant and sprawling ‘Love Song’, alongside a Ben Turok-directed video. Check it out below.
Commenting on the video, Turok said: “This couple is a real 20-year-old couple I casted for the video and drove with from LA to New York. I had planned most of what we shot but of course some things just happened and that’s most of what I liked in the end. I wanted to make something epic in scope, that had all this beauty and emotion baked into its images.”
Bandleader TJ Strohmer, bassist Alex Stackhouse, keyboardist Max Black, drummers Joey Ginaldi and Nora Maupin, guitarist John Klein, and singer and guitarist Johanna Baumann tracked the album across three Philadelphia studios. (Guitarist Dennis Martinelli has since replaced Klein as a guitarist, while Ginaldi has left the group.) The 12-track LP spans nearly 80 minutes, and this line quoted in a press release serves as a kind of mission statement: “This is what we admit in the confusion of being honest.”
