Review: The Beguiled (2017)

Sofia Coppola’s dramatic story consists of strong performances for a thrilling narrative of innocence and jealousy.

Nearing the end of the American Civil War, Martha Farnsworth (Nicole Kidman) leads a girl’s school in Virginia. Almost all of the teachers, students and slaves have left and only one teacher, Edwina Morrow (Kirsten Dunst) and five students (Elle Fanning, Angourie Rice, Oona Laurence, Emma Howard, Addison Riecke) remain. One of the students, Amy, is out picking mushrooms when she comes across a corporal in the Union Army by the name of John McBurney (Colin Farrell) being badly injured he is helped by Amy back to the school where he is grudgingly taken care for, however his presence disrupts the work of the girls, as sexual tension begins to emerge so does jealousy.

Right from the first shot of the film we see Amy walking through the gloomy and murky woods, the path stretches as far as the eye can see, we constantly have this throughout the film giving a sense of isolation to the house and the people in it. As the corporal is brought back to the house we gather a sense of uneasiness, the girls become interested in the new arrival as if they have never seen a man before. They constantly sneak in to ask the corporal questions, to help him and to learn about him, meanwhile the corporal understands the situation he is in, he is sweet and flirts with them in the attempt that they do not give him up to the confederate army. In doing so this creates a subtle tension between the girls.

The sexual tension is strong yet delicate, the first half builds upon Martha, Edwina and Alicia’s wants and so it is with the older girls we see the transformation, Alicia is bored and sees the corporal as an opportunity to seek something new meanwhile Edwina is captured by the corporal’s looks and sweetness and want to escape and while Martha is the most mature and responsible we can see what she really wants but has to hold back to ensure she keeps the girls in order.

Throughout, the girls dress up in all white clothing covering their skin from shoulder to toe showcasing their purity, apart from when they have dinner with the corporal; they wear fancy dresses baring their shoulders and wear jewelry trying to be noticed by the man. The cinematography is hauntingly beautiful; the sunlight softly weighs in on the house and the girls, we frequently see the surrounding of the house at night with only the misty woods neighboring, by day we are secluded from the battle, we see the smoke only from far away.

The isolation and restlessness makes for a horror film, although not one, we are on edge throughout, there is horror to the characters. The film gradually builds for an explosive final act, we are left questioning the innocence of all the girls, on the outside they appear one way: pure, helpful, beautiful and cleanliness but on the inside, it is another story.

Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled is a fantastic drama that brings together numerous incredible performances, beautiful cinematography and a gripping story guaranteed to keep you enthralled.

Review: Super Furry Animals ‘Radiator’

0

The thundering-like album ‘Radiator’ by the Welsh band Super Furry Animals has been re-released after its 20th anniversary.

The album peaked at number 8 on the UK album charts and was undoubtedly worth the spot. Now, it has been re-released on vinyl, CD, and digital which includes the original fourteen songs that have been given a deserved remaster.

So is the album any good? Yes, it is. Super Furry Animals showcase maturity, rawness and simply a vibe beyond many. ‘Radiator’ is a perfect mix of weirdness, energy and abrupt sounds that will drive you into a world of energy that is not given out by many bands. Super Furry Animals really carry their name throughout this album and undoubtedly this is their most cherished album.

“Raw & genuine album that deservedly got a remaster”

Personally, my favourite song from the album is ‘Chupacabras’. Not to take anything away from the rest of the album, but this has the most driven energy that separates the listener from the world surrounding him. Its consistent scream-like chants driven by hardcore guitar is a pure middle finger to the overdone mainstream, so this type of music is genuinely refreshing for those that like to escape the everyday norm. I think the re-release of this album could not be timed any better. Many would argue that Rock still gets on the main stage but be honest and think about how many bands have hit the UK charts as of recent.

Overall, the album is tough it drives you from one track to another with its energy and ambiance, dipping in and out. Truly great music from a band that has more than once showcased their talents. Some might argue that old should not be brought back but in this case, it definitely should be. The remastered version of the album is a great recollection of the original release which arguably deserved even more attention in its early days.

Twitter Gets a Makeover With a New Font

Twitter users that use it the platform via Desktop devices have seen a slight change, as Twitter introduced a different font on their platform.

Users that use Twitter are becoming used to a constant makeover, as just recently the profile pictures were changed from square to rounded which left some users confused. Now, it looks like primary font has changed on desktop platforms from Helvetica Neue to Segoe UI as of today.

The difference between the fonts might not be much to the normal user but the battle between the two fonts have been going on for years. Over the years, Apple has been known for using Helvetica (original version) and competitors Microsoft for using Segoe UI and Segoe. Of course, Helvetica is rather different from Helvetica Neue. The original version was made in 1957 by Max Miedinger and the re-worked version was made by D. Stempel AG in 1983. Both have slight differences as the newer version the font was made to fit the punctuation better and some of the characters were given slight changes for a better fluency and design. However, the difference between Helvetica and Segoe is quite dramatic and thus comes into question what made, the social media giant, Twitter change.

As Twitter had a makeover many users took to the platform to express their feelings about the change.
