“I came to the band with the structure chords and bassline of this song, I am very attached to the music personally,” bassist Bridget Bakie explained in a statement. “Then, Christian [Castan] wrote lyrics over it that have massive significance to him.” Castan added, “‘Catcher’ explores the depths of grief and the unwavering hope that binds us to those we’ve lost.”
The song’s accompanying video was shot by Bakie’s brother Max and edited by Shower Curtain’s Victoria Winter. “I felt I should make the music video because I know the source of the lyrics so closely, but they still aren’t my own,” Bakie said. “I used the boat as a metaphor for staying afloat through grief, while still moving and trying to find peace. The vast lake and the change of seasons are also a part of that. I tried to show the combination of pain and peace that this song holds.”

“We tried to capture the experience of slowly piecing yourself back together, both physically and emotionally, and rediscovering who you are after life has torn parts of you away,” drummer Morten Samdal explained. “It’s a song about healing! “We were in the dead of the summer experiencing another climate-crisis heatwave in LA with no AC,” Livvy Bennett said in a statement. “This song kind of sizzled out as our brain cells were struggling to fire. Everyone started dancing. We were supposed to be writing songs for someone else but we liked this one too much so we never sent it in. We wanted to write about how it feels to not entirely know where you stand with someone. To think that you can see the future but ultimately surrender to uncertainty. The lyrics are obviously a little contradiction. Maybe not knowing is part of the fun?”
