There’s so much music coming out all the time that it’s hard to keep track. On those days when the influx of new tracks is particularly overwhelming, we sift through the noise to bring you a curated list of the most interesting new releases (the best of which will be added to our Best New Songs playlist). Matt Berninger – ‘Bonnet of Pins’
The National frontman Matt Berninger has announced his second solo album, Get Sunk, with the lush, richly detailed new song ‘Bonnet of Pins’. “Our hearts are like old wells filled with pennies and worms,” Berninger said of the process behind the LP, a statement that ties into the theme of the lead single. “I can’t resist going down to the bottom of mine to see what else is there. But sometimes you can get yourself stuck.”
These New Puritans – ‘Bells’ and ‘Industrial Love Song’ [feat. Caroline Polachek]
UK experimental duo These New Puritans have announced a new album, Crooked Wing, arriving May 23 via Domino. They’ve accompanied the announcement with two new songs, the beautifully swirling ‘Bells’ and an otherworldly duet with Caroline Polachek called ‘Industrial Love Song’. “‘Industrial Love Song’ is a duet between two cranes on a building site,” Jack Barnett explained. “Caroline sings the part of one crane, I sing the other; they can’t touch (their movements are controlled by the operator), but when the sun rises they hope that their shadows will cross. I like how the title George came up with misdirects expectations — it’s not that kind of industrial.”
Mark Pritchard & Thom Yorke – ‘This Conversation Is Missing Your Voice’
Mark Pritchard and Thom Yorke have followed up ‘Back in the Game’ and confirmed a full collaborative album, Tall Tales. ‘This Conversation Is Missing Your Voice’ is a little more off-kilter, but no less hypnotic.
Florry – ‘Hey Baby’
Florry have announced a new album, Sounds Like…, which comes out May 23 on Dear Life Records. They recorded it in Asheville, North Carolina with Colin Miller, and lead single ‘Hey Baby’ is a splendid, gutsy tune.
Ty Segall – ‘Fantastic Tomb’
Ty Segall is releasing a new album, Possession, on May 30 via Drag City. The prolific musician collaborated with filmmaker Matt Yoka on the lyrics to the LP, which is led by the narratively intriguing ‘Fantastic Tomb’. “Desperate for something he can hold onto, our hero takes a job hitting the house of ‘a man worth more than a country could make’, only to find the treasure hunt to be just another ride to nowhere,” a press release explains. “The song is a modern American noir-cum-classic rock hoedown, scored with Ty’s burnt-filament lead guitar and ingeniously sealed with Mikal Cronin’s saxophone section.”
Sally Shapiro – ‘The Other Days’
Sally Shapiro have a new album on the way: Ready to Live a Lie arrives May 30 on Italians Do It Better. It’s led by ‘The Other Days’, which is as coy and bittersweet as it is propulsive.
Adult Mom – ‘Crystal’
Adult Mom have announced a new album, Natural Causes, which arrives May 9 via Epitaph. Bandleader Stevie Knipe wrote between 2020 and 2023, with a lot of the songs coming after they underwent intensive cancer treatment. It’s led by the rootsy, cathartic ‘Crystal’, which draws inspiration from “early R.E.M., old folk standards, and harsher nu-metal tones.”
feeble little horse – ‘This Is Real’
Another track inspired by “harsher nu-metal tones” is the new song by feeble little horse, ‘This Is Real’, their first new material since 2023’s Girl With Fish. “I think it’s important that this song is released to turn the page, but also to enjoy the product of sitting with something for a record breaking amount of time for us as a band. We wrote our past 2 albums with this indescribable urgency, and I think ’This Is Real’ happened while the burner was turned to low if that makes sense,” vocalist Lydia Slocum explained. “I wouldn’t say this track can function as a prophecy for what our sound will become for the next album, but it’s become something no other song will ever quite compare to. I seriously grew so much as a person from the beginning to end of the writing process, since the song started when we had to cancel our tour and finally finished just a few weeks ago. I hope this track can function as a time capsule for our fans the same way it has for us.”
Lil Nas X – ‘Big Dummy!’
After sharing his new album Dreamboy‘s title track on Monday, Lil Nas X is already back with a new single from it, ‘Big Dummy’, which is pleasantly bouncy.
Circuit Des Yeux – ‘Truth’
Circuit Des Yeux has shared another fascinating preview of her new album, Halo on the Inside, ahead of its release on Friday. “If ‘Truth’ were an object it would be a multi-faced geode that is in constant rotation,” Haley Fohr explained. “Its meaning is continually shifting and lending itself to the way the listener perceives it. The root of its creation comes from a vivid dream I had in 2015 while staying in Blackrock Territory just outside of Dublin, Ireland.”
Mura Masa – ‘Jump’
Mura Masa is back with an exhilarating new song called ‘Jump’, which samples Zulu Lightning’s soca classic ‘Hol Up Your Foot And Jump’. The track arrives with a music video directed by the Reids.
Courting – ‘Namcy’
Ahead of its release on Friday, Courting have shared a new track from their upcoming album Lust For Life, Or: ‘How to Thread the Needle and Come Out the Other Side to Tell The Story’. “‘Namcy’ is designed to be very hopeful, a stark contrast to the edges of the album,” frontman Sean Murphy-O’Neill said of the uplifting tune. “It is straight set — a linear storyline with made up words. Sometimes, I think it’s important to put aside the need to be clever, and get lost in something a bit more nostalgic, slightly unrealistic, very pretty.”
Sunflower Bean – ‘Nothing Romantic’
Sunflower Bea have released ‘Nothing Romantic’, the latest single from the NYC band’s upcoming album Mortal Primetime, which unexpectedly blooms into an ’80s-inspired power ballad. “‘Nothing Romantic’ is about rejecting the myth of the tortured artist – realizing that the joys of creativity don’t have to come from the lows of misery,” the band explained. “The video mirrors this journey, capturing our lives as touring musicians in between nightmarish performances. From green rooms to lost highways, we travel from town to town, feeling alive only in the escape of our show. There’s tension between the connection and solitude; on stage, we’re together, sharing our music with others but later isolation and the price of our sacrifices creep in.”
Niis – ‘BYD’
LA-based band Niis have dropped ‘BYD’, a ferocious new single from their upcoming LP Niis World. The record is due March 28 via Get Better Records.
Joni – ‘Still Young’
London-based songwriter Joni has unveiled ‘Still Young’, a tenderly radiant track from her forthcoming debut album, Things I Left Behind,. “I originally wrote this song for my little sister who was going through a rough patch,” Joni explained, “but then somewhere down the line she got her life together and things were kind of unraveling for me… I remember being on tour and thinking that the perspective had shifted and I was really just singing the song to myself. I think it’s good to be in touch with younger versions of yourself and to carry them with you as you move through life.”
