Walker Art Center Senior Designer Nazlı Ercan Unpacks Innovative Visual Language for Alison O’Daniel’s Groundbreaking Cinema Residency

At the forefront of visual communication in the arts, Nazlı Ercan, a distinguished Senior Designer at the Walker Art Center, recently discussed her intricate work in designing the visual identity for Alison O’Daniel’s seminal cinema residency, “Alison O’Daniel: Are You Listening?

This multi-faceted program, running from March 2024 through June 2025, challenges conventional perceptions of sound and communication, a conceptual framework meticulously translated into visual design by Ercan. Her approach exemplifies how sophisticated design systems can enhance access and deepen engagement, particularly within the digital realm.

Alison O’Daniel, a d/Deaf/hard of hearing artist, utilizes film, sculpture, and performance to explore the multifaceted nature of hearing and understanding. Her residency at the Walker Cinema, which commenced with her debut feature film The Tuba Thieves, aims to redefine the cinematic experience by questioning, “What does a d/Deaf cinema sound like?”. This ambitious inquiry presented a unique design challenge that Ercan embraced with her characteristic thoughtfulness.

When asked about her connection to O’Daniel’s work, Ercan articulated her profound appreciation for the artist’s use of “absence—not as mere emptiness or void, but as an active, generative space that invites engagement.” Ercan elaborated, “She makes what is invisible or silent feel meaningful. The gaps in sound, the pauses in language, all serve as openings that ask the viewer to fill in meaning, to participate actively in the experience.” This philosophical alignment deeply informed Ercan’s design methodology, where the deliberate omission or withholding of elements becomes as communicative as their presence, challenging traditional sensory hierarchies.

Designing for a program centered on deafness and alternative hearing modalities prompted Ercan to innovate using visual cues rooted in everyday communication technology. Her response involved exploring the visual language of closed captioning. “I incorporated rectangular boxes around title lock-ups as a direct visual reference to captioning formats,” Ercan explained. Further, the animations for the program feature “flipping title cards reminiscent of analog clocks—silent yet rhythmic.” This ingenious visual rhythm suggests a pulse or beat without auditory input, allowing silence to convey its own form of “sound.” These design elements demonstrate Ercan’s mastery in creating a cohesive visual system that communicates a complex concept through subtle, digital-friendly means.

The deliberate and arresting choices in typography and color for the screenings’ visual identity and accompanying Instagram posts underscore Ercan’s strategic thinking in digital communication. She selected the typeface Topol for its distinctive letterforms, particularly its unique question mark and alternate glyphs, which infuse a playful yet sophisticated character. To enhance visual dynamism, Ercan alternated between all-caps and sentence case across layouts, creating movement within the typography itself. The color palette, carefully extracted from one of O’Daniel’s key works, was specifically adapted for optimal clarity and visibility on diverse social media platforms. “Balancing a reference to her aesthetic with the practical need for digital prominence was essential,” Ercan noted, emphasizing the intersection of artistic integrity and effective digital dissemination.

Ercan attributes the project’s success to the design system’s direct reflection of the program’s core concept: communicating sound through silence. The system’s flexibility and scalability—its ability to adapt to different films and texts without losing coherence—were also crucial factors. This adaptability is paramount for sustaining a strong identity across an evolving, multi-platform program.

Ultimately, Ercan aimed for visitors to recognize the program as more than just a series of film screenings. “I wanted the visitors to come away recognizing that this program was about far more than simply watching films—it was about rethinking how we perceived and processed experience,” she stated. Her design encourages audiences to engage with quiet moments and perceive communication beyond spoken language, fostering a heightened awareness of access, perception, and inclusion. This broader objective reflects Ercan’s commitment to design that serves a profound social and intellectual purpose.

Nazlı Ercan’s extensive career highlights her consistent ability to translate complex artistic and cultural narratives into compelling visual forms. As a senior designer at the Walker Art Center, she collaborates closely with curators on exhibition graphics, publications, and advertising, spanning both print and digital formats. Her impressive portfolio includes work for highly esteemed cultural and arts organizations such as the Carnegie Museum of Art, Columbia GSAPP, OMA New York, David Zwirner, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others.

In 2023, Ercan served as Design Director of The Brooklyn Rail, where she spearheaded the magazine’s editorial design and visual identity, further honing her expertise in fast-paced, multidisciplinary environments. Her work has garnered significant recognition, including a Silver award for the Whitney Biennial 2022 Brand from the New York Design Awards 2022 and an Artist Choice Grant for The Brooklyn Rail from the Ruth Awards. Notable career achievements include designing exhibition graphics and a catalog for “Kandis Williams: A Surface” at the Walker, developing visual identities for major exhibitions like “Sophie Calle: Overshare” and “This Must Be the Place,” and contributing to exhibitions for influential artists such as Pope.L and Madeline Hollander at the Whitney.

Beyond her acclaimed design practice, Ercan is deeply committed to arts education, serving as a guest critic and speaker at prestigious institutions including Yale, Princeton, Parsons, SVA, and Rutgers. A graduate of Princeton University with a degree in Art and Archaeology, her work consistently sits at the intersection of art, culture, and publishing, marked by a focus on clear visual language and thoughtful systems. Her innovative approach to the Alison O’Daniel residency exemplifies her profound impact on how audiences engage with contemporary art through the power of strategic visual design and the intelligent application of communication technology.

Can Yağız’s Art Finds Memory in Material, Featured in Upcoming Ely Center Exhibition

In a world grappling with the elusive nature of memory and the ever-evolving self, artist Can Yağız offers a profound and visceral artistic exploration, comparing the very essence of identity to the forgotten fragments found in an old coat pocket. Yağız’s evocative works, which delve into the materiality of everyday life, are set to be part of the highly anticipated “Conceptual Romance” group exhibition, opening at the Ely Center of Contemporary Art in New Haven on September 14, 2025.

For Yağız, the inspiration often begins with the seemingly mundane. “Similar to the first cold day of the year, when you grab a coat you haven’t worn in a while and put your hands in the pockets, and find a piece of a receipt, a used tissue, a caramel wrapper, and a band-aid, also used. And not recognize who these fragments belong to,” Yağız reflects on his work.

This powerful analogy underpins his philosophy that the self, far from being an enduring thread, is fragile and can fragment, making it challenging to reconcile memories with who one perceives themselves to be. “Material had memory, in how a tissue soaked and how an envelope scuffed. It rendered progression,” he explains

His new work includes pieces that incorporate newspapers. “When young, I used to receive newspaper clippings from my grandmother,” he recalls. “Just bits of headlines, articles, or an extra insert she must have thought I should be reading. I think everyone to some extent cuts, snips and then arranges them. It feels natural to collage with.”

Yağız found printmaking to be uniquely suited to his interests. The discipline’s inherent qualities of repetition and fatigue resonate deeply with his exploration of time’s passage and the slow unfolding of events. His artistic process is less about rigid planning and more about intimate collaboration with the material itself.

“I often print without cleaning the plate, with each repeat, the image gets blurrier, more dissolved,” he said. “The body, if it appears at all, dissolves too. It stops being an image but more of a residue. This isn’t just in form, I think bodies are residues.”

One of his influences is the German artist Dieter Roth (1930-1998). “I enjoy Dieter Roth’s work;in how I perceive it, as he moves away from the book but still with concerns of the book, so it’s more about making a composite object,” said Yağız. “Things being bound with or encased in chocolate. And that they exist on borrowed time. I don’t think any chocolate makers ever intended for others to see how the fat of chocolate seeps out over time.”

“I’m less didactic in how I do work, it’s not usually planning something out and executing it,” he explains. “Working with material and seeing where it goes… I walk in on them.” Some of his techniques include sunlight bleaching paper or an obstruction creating a silhouette that transforms a simple sheet into a historical document, rich with context.

Influenced by Turkish philosophers and the profound significance of found objects, Yağız incorporates items such as newspaper clippings, discarded mail, and even crumpled paper from his own pockets into his practice. His minimalist recent works often focus on bodily interactions and the subtle indications of time’s relentless march.

“It’s so easy to feel at a standstill, being in a time that refuses to move forward,” he said. “Then you notice a stack of four newspapers on the doormat and realize, it’s been four days.”

Beyond two-dimensional pieces, Yağız’s oeuvre includes performance art, such as a compelling sound piece, and sculptural installations like a piece featuring a fridge and glasses, further pushing the boundaries of material memory, as well as video art.

The upcoming “Conceptual Romance” exhibition, curated by esteemed curator Jared Quinton, celebrates the Ely Center’s 10-year anniversary and will feature the works of 23 artists. Yağız will showcase four pieces, including a captivating nine-minute looped video titled “Kettle.”

Of the work, he notes, “by end of the loop, most of the water evaporates so the kettle gets silent and periodically gets whispery, and dry heaves as it continues to be full blast on the stove.” This piece promises to be a poignant meditation on depletion and persistence, characteristic of Yağız’s approach.

Can Yağız graduated with his BFA in Painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2018. His solo exhibitions include “Not today either” (2024) at the Ely Center of Contemporary Art and “Büro” (2018) at the John Fonda Gallery. His work has also been featured in notable group exhibitions across New York, Beijing, Boston, and New Haven, and he participated in an artist residency in Slovenia in 2017.

Speaking on his new work, Yağız explains: “There’s one type of crayon I use to make prints. I am consistently jealous of what photographs usually imply, because even if an image is a blur and you can’t tell what you’re looking at, and all you can decipher is a blob, you still know it’s pointed at something. You might not know what that “blob” is, but you know it probably exists. Print has a similar dynamic, and running the same print without any kind of reset breaks the image down.”

“I tend to keep everything and hold onto them for a while before deciding whether to throw it away or not. That includes newspapers too and they are a torrent that easily takes over a room. I think a lot about fatigue and being unable to keep up, and boulders of newspaper feels accurate, tangible, physical, almost personified form.

“Conceptual Romance” will run from September 14 to November 2, 2025, offering audiences a unique opportunity to experience Can Yağız’s profound reflections on self, memory, and the silent stories held within the objects we leave behind. For more information about the artist, visit cyagiz.com.

Taeseok Park: The Vancouver Tattoo Artist Crafting Personal “Memory Maps” onto Skin

In the tattoo world, one artist based in Vancouver is meticulously redefining what it means to carry a story on your skin. Taeseok Park, known professionally as @t.a.e_t, has carved a unique niche in the global tattoo community by specializing in “memory maps” – intricate, deeply personal designs that translate a client’s life journey, pivotal moments, and cherished symbols into breathtaking visual narratives. His work, a striking blend of hyperrealism and precise geometric elements, transcends mere decoration, offering a permanent, poignant reflection of individual identity.

Park’s distinctive approach has garnered him significant acclaim, establishing him as a prominent figure in the entertainment and tattoo industries. His artistry is not just about ink on skin; it’s about crafting a legacy, visually and emotionally. “I’m known for translating a client’s life story into a design that flows naturally with the body’s shape,” Park explains. “Every element in the tattoo, whether it’s a portrait, statue, natural form, or object, is drawn with precision and intention. These are the areas where I truly shine, and I take pride in balancing technical skill with meaningful storytelling.”

The Art of the Memory Map: A Journey Etched in Ink

The concept of the “memory map” is at the core of Park’s artistic philosophy. Unlike conventional tattoos chosen for their aesthetic appeal, Park’s creations are built upon a foundation of profound personal significance. When a client approaches him for a memory map, the process begins with an intimate exchange designed to unearth the most resonant aspects of their life.

“When a client wants to capture their life story through a tattoo, I first ask them to send me any reference materials that hold meaning for them; this can include photos, quotes, videos, songs they often listened to, and more,” Park reveals, shedding light on his meticulous design process. “From there, I identify the client’s priorities and use those to establish the main theme, supporting elements, and background. I then design the piece to flow naturally with the body’s shape, so that both the story and the form are in harmony.”

For Park, every memory is valuable, but the starting point for each unique design is crucial. “Every memory is meaningful, but I always begin with the one that holds the most importance to the client — the core moment or story they feel truly defines their journey,” he elaborates. “That becomes the foundation for the entire tattoo design, which is always unique.”

The visual representation of these memories is also thoughtfully considered, taking into account the canvas itself. “I decide what to include visually based on the placement of the tattoo and how it flows with the body’s natural shape,” Park states. “I choose elements that not only hold meaning for the client but also complement the specific area of the body, both aesthetically and structurally.” This attention to anatomical flow ensures that the tattoo is not merely a collection of images but an integrated part of the body, moving and evolving with it.

The term “memory map” itself, coined by Park, perfectly encapsulates the essence of his work. “I call my tattoos ‘memory maps’ because the tattoo captures different moments from the client’s memories — like mapping out meaningful points in time,” he explains. “Each element represents a specific experience, coming together to form a visual map of their personal journey.”

While many tattoos are chosen for their visual appeal, Park notes that his client base is predominantly drawn to the deeper narrative. “Most tattoos generally fall into one of two categories: those chosen for their visual appeal and aesthetic value, and those based on personal memories or meaningful experiences,” he observes. “In my case, the majority of my clients come to me with stories and memories they want to preserve — so yes, most of the tattoos I create are filled with personal meaning.”

What truly sets Park’s “memory map” tattoos apart from the broader tattoo landscape is this seamless integration of narrative and form. “What sets my memory map tattoos apart is the way I translate meaningful moments from a person’s life into a design that flows seamlessly with the body’s natural shape,” he asserts. “Each piece is crafted with precise linework, delicate shading, and a realistic touch that brings the story to life. In this style, I believe my work stands on par with the very best in the field.”

From Hairstylist’s Chair to Tattoo Machine: A Creative Evolution

Taeseok Park’s journey to becoming a globally recognized tattoo artist is as compelling as the stories he etches onto skin. Before the hum of the tattoo machine became his daily soundtrack, Park navigated the fast-paced world of hairstyling. His days were a whirlwind of perms, color treatments, and endless conversations, a career he genuinely enjoyed. However, beneath the surface, a different artistic yearning began to take root.

“As much as I loved working with hair, I found myself craving a slower, more focused form of creative expression,” Park recalls. The turning point arrived unexpectedly. “One day, I saw a floral tattoo on a client’s arm and was immediately captivated. I asked them everything — how it was done, how long it took, what it cost.” That night, the image of the tattoo lingered in his mind, sparking an undeniable curiosity. “I couldn’t stop thinking about it. I reached out to an artist I admired on Instagram, and the rest is history.”

This pivotal moment marked the beginning of a profound career transformation. Park transitioned from shaping hair to shaping stories, embracing a new medium that allowed for unparalleled depth and permanence. For him, the shift was profoundly personal: “Tattooing, for me, isn’t just about putting ink on skin – it’s about building something meaningful that lasts a lifetime, both visually and emotionally.” This philosophy underpins every design, every precise line, and every shaded detail.

Acclaim and Global Recognition

Park’s dedication to his craft and his innovative “memory map” concept have not gone unnoticed. His distinct style and technical prowess have earned him significant accolades and a growing international reputation.

In 2022, Park received his first major award, securing 3rd Place in the Black & Grey category at the prestigious Korea Tattoo Convention. His success continued on Canadian soil, with back-to-back victories at the Vancouver Tattoo Convention, where he was awarded 2nd Place in Black & Grey Realism in both 2024 and 2025. These awards underscore his consistent excellence and his mastery of realism, a cornerstone of his memory map designs.

Beyond the convention circuit, Park’s work has caught the eye of public figures and leading publications. In 2024, he had the unique opportunity to tattoo American actor Owen Joyner, further elevating his profile. His artistry has also been featured in esteemed publications like Forbes and various other international tattoo magazines, solidifying his status as an influential artist in the field. This widespread recognition is further bolstered by his sponsorship with @Kwadron, a globally respected ink brand, a testament to his quality and standing in the industry.

Looking Ahead: Connecting Through Art

As Taeseok Park continues to push the boundaries of tattoo artistry, his commitment to crafting meaningful, enduring pieces remains unwavering. His unique ability to translate the complex tapestry of human experience into tangible, beautiful art sets him apart.

Fans and aspiring artists will have an opportunity to witness his skill firsthand in the near future. Taeseok Park is confirmed to participate at the Alberta Tattoo Convention, scheduled for October 17 to 19, 2025. This appearance will provide another platform for him to share his “memory map” philosophy and demonstrate the intricate process behind his award-winning creations.

In a world increasingly seeking authenticity and personal expression, Taeseok Park’s “memory maps” offer a profound and beautiful way to commemorate life’s most defining moments. His journey from hairstylist to acclaimed tattoo artist is a testament to the power of passion, the pursuit of a deeper creative calling, and the enduring impact of art that truly speaks to the soul.

The Evolution of Home Entertainment: How IPTV Technology Revolutionized Media Consumption

Home entertainment has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past few decades. From the early days of black-and-white television to the rise of streaming services, technology has continually reshaped how people consume media. IPTV, or Internet Protocol Television, stands at the forefront of this evolution, revolutionizing the viewing experience by delivering content over the internet rather than traditional cable or satellite methods.

As viewers increasingly seek flexibility and personalization, IPTV technology has emerged as a game-changer. It offers an extensive library of on-demand content, allowing users to watch what they want when they want. This shift not only enhances convenience but also caters to diverse tastes and preferences, making it a pivotal development in the media landscape. Understanding how IPTV has influenced home entertainment reveals the broader trends shaping the future of media consumption.

The Evolution of Home Entertainment

The journey of home entertainment reflects significant technological advancements over decades. Early media consumption began with radio and progressed to black-and-white television, where families gathered around a small screen in the living room. As color TVs emerged in the 1960s, viewers experienced a richer visual landscape, enhancing the emotional connection to programming.

In the 1980s, the introduction of VHS tapes provided an unprecedented level of flexibility. Viewers could record shows to watch later, breaking free from strict programming schedules. This shift fostered a new culture of viewing habits, setting the stage for further innovation.

The late 1990s and early 2000s saw the rapid emergence of digital broadcasting, which improved picture and sound quality. This advancement paved the way for the development of high-definition television, allowing audiences to enjoy stunning visual clarity. At this point, the landscape began shifting dramatically towards interactive and user-driven experiences.

The rise of the internet brought significant change, leading to the advent of streaming platforms. Viewers gained access to vast libraries of content instantly, transcending geographic and temporal limitations. The ability to binge-watch entire seasons revolutionized the consumption model and catered to personalized viewing preferences.

Integration of smart technology into televisions bolstered this movement. Smart TVs brought internet connectivity into homes, enabling viewers to access diverse applications and services directly from their television screens. This convergence empowered audiences to control their media experiences with exceptional convenience. Even for those exploring modern options, choosing from the best IPTV providers has become an easy way to bring extensive channels and on-demand content directly into the home.

Today, choices abound, with content accessible through multiple devices, including smartphones and tablets. The landscape continues to evolve as new technologies emerge, fostering an increasingly participatory and personalized approach to home entertainment that adapts to the preferences of every individual viewer.

The Rise of IPTV Technology

Internet Protocol Television represents a significant advancement in how content is delivered to viewers. It utilizes internet connections to transmit live and on-demand programming directly to televisions and other devices. Users benefit from a wide range of choices, enabling personalized viewing experiences that traditional media lacked. With this technology, subscribers can access content through devices such as smart TVs, computers, and mobile phones, transforming the way audiences engage with their favorite shows and movies.

Definition of IPTV

Internet Protocol Television is a system that delivers television content over the internet rather than through traditional satellite or cable formats. This technology breaks down programming into data packets, which are then streamed to the end user in real time. The main advantage of this delivery method lies in its ability to provide interactive features, on-demand viewing, and the ease of accessing extensive content libraries, as highlighted in Our Culture Mag Film. Users no longer need to rely solely on broadcast schedules, as they can choose what to watch and when to watch it.

Comparison with Traditional Broadcasting

The primary distinction between IPTV and traditional broadcasting lies in content delivery methods. Traditional broadcasting relies on radio waves or satellite signals to transmit television programs, often limiting viewer choice to scheduled programming. In contrast, internet-based systems empower users with the ability to select content on demand. This shift leads to a more flexible viewing experience, allowing users to watch shows and films at their convenience. Additionally, the interactivity offered by internet protocol services enhances viewer engagement through features such as pause, rewind, and access to additional content related to the program currently being viewed. Together, these differences mark a substantial progression in how entertainment is consumed and valued.

Impact on Media Consumption

The evolution of broadcast technology significantly impacts how audiences engage with content. Viewing habits have transformed as audiences gain access to diverse platforms and seamless experiences. People increasingly favor watching whenever they like, with many opting for customized viewing schedules instead of adhering to traditional broadcast times. As a result, audiences become more selective, often curating their viewing lists to fit personal tastes rather than relying on what’s available at a given time.

Changes in Viewing Habits

Viewing habits witnessed a remarkable shift over recent years. Audiences now prefer binge-watching entire series instead of waiting week-to-week for new episodes. This trend stems from access to vast libraries offering complete seasons. Additionally, consumption occurs across various devices, with mobile phones and tablets often favored for convenience. Users engage with content anywhere, whether commuting or relaxing at home. This flexibility allows for more spontaneous viewing choices, reflecting a desire for immediate gratification in entertainment consumption.

The Shift to On-Demand Content

The demand for on-demand options grows steadily, reshaping how content is produced and delivered. Audiences increasingly prioritize the ability to watch preferred shows and movies at their convenience. This shift incentivizes content creators to develop innovative programming tailored to audience preferences, resulting in a rich variety of genres and formats. Faced with an abundance of choices, viewers can explore niche interests that traditional broadcasting often overlooked. Instant access to a broad spectrum of content has fostered an environment where traditional viewing molds no longer apply.

Advantages of IPTV

The advent of internet-based television has transformed how individuals consume media, offering a range of benefits that enhance the viewing experience.

Cost-Effectiveness

Subscription plans for internet-based television often come at a lower cost compared to traditional cable packages. Consumers enjoy a variety of pricing options, allowing them to select packages that fit their budgets. With reduced advertising and fewer hidden fees, users frequently save money while accessing a broader range of channels. Additionally, the absence of equipment rental fees further enhances affordability, making it an appealing choice for budget-conscious viewers.

Access to Global Content

Internet-based television expands access to a wealth of international programming. Viewers can explore diverse shows, movies, and sports from various countries without geographical restrictions. This access to global content fosters cultural exchange and offers unique insights into different lifestyles and traditions. Users benefit from being able to discover niche interests and specialized programming that may not be available through conventional television channels.

Challenges and Limitations

Despite the advancements in technology, challenges persist in the evolution of home entertainment. Internet reliance remains a significant concern. Users must maintain a stable and high-speed connection to access their content. Interruptions in service or slow connections can lead to buffering issues, disrupting the viewing experience. Additionally, not all regions have the same internet infrastructure. Some users experience limited access to high-speed internet, which restricts their ability to fully engage with streaming platforms.

Broadcast quality concerns also arise in this context. Users occasionally experience fluctuations in picture and sound quality, which can detract from the enjoyment of programming. Variability can stem from multiple factors, including network congestion or bandwidth limitations. The disparity between high-definition options and lower-quality streams may lead to dissatisfaction among viewers accustomed to pristine visuals and audio. This inconsistency remains a noteworthy hurdle for users seeking a seamless and reliable entertainment experience.

Conclusion

The evolution of home entertainment has reshaped how audiences engage with media. IPTV technology stands at the forefront of this transformation by offering unparalleled flexibility and access to diverse content. As viewers continue to embrace personalized viewing experiences, the demand for on-demand programming will only grow.

This shift not only influences what content is created but also how it’s delivered. While challenges remain, such as internet connectivity issues, the benefits of IPTV are undeniable. The future of home entertainment promises to be more interactive and tailored to individual preferences, fostering a richer media consumption landscape.

Why Nostalgic Arcade Thrills Still Matter in Today’s User Experience

Think back to the last time you stepped into an arcade. The flashing lights, the cheerful beeps, and the satisfying clink of coins dropping into a prize chute. Even if it’s been years, that memory probably makes you smile. Nostalgia has a way of cutting through the noise, pulling us back into moments that felt simple, exciting, and rewarding.

In the world of user experience design, that same feeling can be a powerful tool. Just like a coin pusher machine draws players in with the promise of a small action leading to a big win, digital products can use emotional triggers to keep people engaged. It’s not about copying the games, but about understanding why those experiences worked in the first place—and using those insights to create lasting connections.

Why Nostalgia Works in Digital Design

Nostalgia isn’t just a warm, fuzzy feeling. Psychologists say it boosts mood, creates a sense of belonging, and makes people more open to new ideas. In UX, this translates into designs that feel familiar yet fresh.

Think of classic arcade visuals. The bright colors, intuitive controls, and simple goals are instantly recognizable. That sense of recognition lowers the barrier to engagement. When users feel comfortable right away, they’re more likely to explore, interact, and return.

Emotional Resonance Drives Retention

While data and features matter, emotion is often what keeps people coming back. A well-designed app or website should do more than solve a problem—it should make people feel something.

This could be excitement when they hit a milestone, relief when they find what they need quickly, or joy when an animation makes them smile. The key is to weave emotional beats into the journey. Even small touches, like sound cues or visual callbacks to retro aesthetics, can create a bond between user and product.

Lessons From the Arcade

Coin-pusher games, pinball machines, and claw cranes may seem simple, but they share traits that translate well into modern UX. Here are a few core lessons:

  • Clear objectives: In the arcade, you know exactly what to do—push coins, win prizes. In UX, clarity helps users reach their goals faster.
  • Visible progress: Watching coins stack up mirrors the satisfaction of tracking progress in a digital product.
  • Instant feedback: Every move in an arcade game gives you a response, just like a well-designed app responds instantly to actions.

These elements are timeless because they tap into human psychology. We like to see results, we want to know what’s next, and we feel rewarded when our actions have a visible effect.

Balancing Fun and Function

Of course, digital products can’t rely solely on fun. Functionality comes first. A product that looks great but fails to deliver on its promises will lose users fast.

That said, adding small moments of delight can set an experience apart. This could be a playful loading animation, a gamified progress tracker, or an interactive onboarding process. The trick is to integrate these elements naturally so they enhance usability rather than distract from it.

Applying Nostalgia to Modern Products

Bringing nostalgia into UX isn’t about making everything look like it’s from the 80s. It’s about identifying the feelings you want to evoke—anticipation, reward, joy—and finding design elements that spark them.

For example:

  • Use sound design that gives subtle callbacks to arcade tones without overwhelming the user.
  • Incorporate progress visuals that mirror the slow build of a coin stack in a pusher game.
  • Offer small, achievable wins early in the experience to build momentum.

These touches work in e-commerce sites, fitness apps, educational platforms, and even B2B software. The key is subtlety. Users should feel the emotional pull without feeling like they’ve been dropped into a time machine.

The Role of Anticipation

One reason coin-pusher games are so addictive is the sense of “almost there.” Each coin you drop feels like it could be the one to tip the balance. That anticipation keeps you engaged.

In UX, the same concept applies to progress indicators, countdowns, and staged rewards. These create a sense of forward motion, encouraging users to stick around. Done well, they make the user feel like they’re part of the process rather than just a passive observer.

Avoiding the Gimmick Trap

It’s tempting to overdo nostalgia. Too many retro callbacks can make a product feel outdated or gimmicky. The goal is to blend familiarity with modern functionality.

A great example is using clean, contemporary layouts with small nods to the past—color schemes inspired by arcade cabinets, or pixel art used sparingly. By keeping the main design modern, you ensure usability while still tapping into those warm, memorable associations.

Final Thoughts

The arcade may feel like a relic of the past, but the lessons it holds are timeless. Nostalgia, when used with intention, can make a product more relatable, more memorable, and more enjoyable to use.

Whether it’s the slow build of anticipation, the thrill of a small win, or the comfort of familiar visuals, these elements speak to something universal. By understanding why these experiences worked then, we can design digital products that feel just as engaging now.

‘Burning Bush’ is the oldest song on the album, written on the porch of a Baltimore punk house I lived in around 2015 or so. The flutes at the beginning were recorded separately for a different song which got scrapped. They reminded me of what a burning bush might sound like so I included them as an intro.

‘Bees In The Couch’ is named after an occasion where I slept on an outdoor couch while on tour with Palberta. The couch was on a covered porch – everyone else slept inside on the floor. In the morning our host awoke and said “don’t sit on the porch couch, it’s full of bees.” I didn’t get stung and the image of the couch full of bees remained in my mind.

Filipczak recorded most of the new album while paying rent to a landlord who believed he was a spy, forcing him to move to Philadelphia. “The period in which this album was recorded ended up being defined by this guy who had economic power over me, through being my landlord, slowly going crazy and losing touch with reality,” Filipczak recalled. He added, “A lot of the songwriting is the negative space left behind by what @ became.”

How to Pick Your Attorney: Things to Know and Helpful Tips to Choose the Best Advisor for You

Laws can be pretty complex, containing many ambiguities and unclear statements, especially for people without a professional education. Gaining it or reading DIY guides is not the answer in this case. Both take too long and may cost too much in the end, since the price of a mistake is relatively high in the legal field.

It is much better to pick a qualified and experienced attorney who possesses enough expertise to explain some unclear points and protect your rights in the best way possible. Nowadays, obtaining a professional legal consultation is conveniently possible online. However, if you have a specific issue and are located in Oklahoma, it may be reasonable to visit a proficient attorney in Oklahoma City personally to discuss the details and feasible solutions in your case.

Among all of the options available in this location, it is not an easy thing to make the final choice. The following tips and information will make you more informed on this matter.

What Attorneys Generally Do for Their Clients?

If you are unsure whether you need an attorney at all, here is a list of assignments that professional lawyers help to complete successfully:

  • Case review and analysis. On the surface, it may seem that a case is impossible to win. However, when a professional attorney conducts a more detailed assessment, it becomes clear that they can effectively protect the client’s interests. Life situations vary a lot. However, in most cases, finding a suitable solution is possible; it simply requires a different amount of time and some specific skills.
  • Negotiations. Professional attorneys handle negotiations with officers, counterparts, spouses, and others. Handling negotiations when attorneys are involved in the process is much easier, as professionals remain impartial while pursuing the best interests of their clients.

If you find yourself in a situation where you need to deal with a particularly difficult or manipulative person, this challenge requires 100% of your skills. Professional attorneys can handle even the most complex, multi-stage, or challenging negotiations effectively.

  • Document drafting. From drafting a simple letter to preparing pleadings, professional attorneys assist with creating legal documents that comply with the professional standards and requirements of applicable laws. They help to communicate the point clearly and make your position sound persuasive and reasonable. This aspect matters especially a lot when we speak about pleadings. Neglecting some legal formalities may lead to formal rejection or losing even if the set of your evidence is better than that of the other party.
  • Representation of the client’s interest during different legal proceedings. The court proceedings come to mind first. These proceedings are particularly challenging and require thorough preparation. There is considerable tension during these proceedings, as a judge must always remain impartial and never express affection towards one party or another.

Professional, well-grounded, and prompt responses are crucial during court proceedings. They signify you’re thoroughly prepared; an experienced attorney can help with that. However, apart from court proceedings, there are many other formats where the active participation of professional attorneys is required, for instance, with state or bank officials.

  • Help to proceed with other legal assignments, as the case may be. Professional attorneys may act as legal advisors on various matters, for instance, when guardians, investigators, or executors are involved in a case. Having a reliable advisor is crucial in such situations, as protecting one’s rights in advance is preferable to dealing with the potential negative consequences of failure to do so.

Overall, professional attorneys are always open to discussing points that fall under their expertise. Even if you have a challenging situation on your agenda, a proficient attorney will help you resolve it sooner or later.

Tips on How to Pick the Best Attorney for You

If you have realized that you need professional assistance with resolving any difficult situation you have now in your life, there are helpful tips to pick the right attorney for you:

  • Define your legal needs. Clarify the type of legal situation you are facing, particularly to which area of law it belongs, what its nature is, and what rights you think have been violated. If you find it particularly difficult, list them on a separate sheet of paper. This effort makes things much clearer and straightforward.
  • Draw attention to the expertise. The best way is to choose an attorney who already possesses sufficient knowledge in the field where you are seeking advice. The advice is especially valuable when you have a problematic situation in your life.
  • Review recommendations and references from current or former clients. Ask friends and relatives. In addition, look through the publicly available reviews from the attorney’s clients. Be especially attentive to negative ones.
  • Request a meeting. It is entirely fine to discuss all matters in advance during the personal meeting. Before taking your case, a professional attorney reviews
  • Discuss billing in advance. A reliable attorney will also clarify billing issues ahead so that you won’t be worried about money. It is totally fine to discuss the issue once you start cooperation with a chosen attorney.

Bottom Line

Working with a professional attorney to resolve your case is often easier and sometimes even essential. Complicated court and other legal proceedings require expertise, knowledge, and skills to protect the client’s rights effectively.

Know your needs, assess the available offers and reviews, and schedule a consultation. Selecting an attorney is akin to choosing a doctor. Sometimes your life may depend on that choice. Do your best to make it mindfully and to the point!

Path of Exile 2: Content Update, New Features & Release Date

0

Path of Exile 2 is set to roll out its 0.3 patch update called “The Third Edict.” This major update from Grinding Gear Games will introduce a fresh content expansion.

More concretely, the patch includes an all-new campaign act, additional side content, a new story, and a variety of areas to explore. Players can also expect expanded endgame activities, the introduction of an asynchronous trade system, and a significant gameplay overhaul.

In line with this, the latest update of Path of Exile 2 seemingly promises to reshape core mechanics. At the same time, the Third Edict gives players a rich taste of what version 1.0 could deliver.

According to reports from IGN and UnGeek, patch 0.3 is set to deliver thrills and excitement to the fans of the game.

Continue the Journey with Act Four

Patch 0.3 resumes the story of Path of Exile 2 by introducing Act Four. Players will join Doryani in finding a powerful ancient weapon that is capable of destroying the Beast. The quest takes players to the eight islands of the Ngamakanui archipelago. Likewise, Act Four is going to introduce more than 100 new monster types, 12 new bosses, and 16 more areas. More importantly, the brand-new act is non-linear. This allows players to take on the islands and challenges in any order.

Meanwhile, the developers swapped the Cruel Difficulty with three Interlude acts. From helping Renly in Ogham to finding the lost Vaal descendants, this set of side stories helps players reach level 65. They also bridge the gap to endgame content.

Battle Forces in the Rise of the Abyssals League

Grinding Gear Games is rolling out Rise of the Abyssals. It is the first full league of Path of Exile 2. Specifically, this pits players against necromantic Abyssal forces that came from fissures in Wraeclast. Also, gamers can earn powerful rewards, craft Abyssal magic, and face deadly bosses as they close Abysses. Due to the changes, free passive tree refunds are granted for all returning Early Access characters.

Endgame Additions Streamline Difficulty and Rewards

The latest update revamps the endgame of Path of Exile 2. It is introducing Splinter-based access to Pinnacle Content with adjustable difficulty costs. Additionally, the Arbiter of Ash gains new static and Uber fight modes. At the same time, Waystone modifiers are reworked to balance risk and reward.

Other Major Changes

Patch 0.3 improves the Support Gem system, removing some restrictions and allowing build customization. Moreover, players can now make purchases even if the seller is offline through asynchronous trade.

Release Date

Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict will drop on August 29, 2025. The patch goes live at 1:00 PM PT / 4:00 PM ET / 9:00 PM BST.
