Films on MUBI in February, 2024

The line-up list for MUBI’s February has arrived. MUBI’s categories for the month include The More the Messier, a selection of films that spotlight complex relationships from throuples to threesomes. This category will consist of films such as Jules and Jim (1962), Love Songs (2007), and Spring Fever (2009)

Moreover, Journey to Italy: A Roberto Rossellini Retrospective will showcase films by Rossellini, one of the key innovators of the Italian Neorealist movement. The retrospective will start with Rome, Open City (1945), a film set in Nazi-occupied Rome in 1944.

Cakes da Killa Announces New Album ‘Black Sheep’, Shares New Single

Cakes da Killa has announced a new album called Black Sheep. The follow-up to 2022’s Svengali comes out March 22 via Young Art. Today, the New York rapper has previewed the LP with the new single ‘Mind Reader’, a collaboration with Stout. Check it out below.

In addition to Stout, Black Sheep features collaborations with Dawn Richard and Wuhryn Dumas. It finds Cakes da Killa reuniting with longtime collaborator Sam Katz, the producer behind Svengali.

Fabiana Palladino Announces Debut Album, Releases New Song

Fabiana Palladino has announced her self-titled debut album, which is set for release on April 5 via Paul Institute and XL Recordings. The 10-track LP features contributions from Jai Paul, Rob Moose, drummer Steve Ferrone, and Palladino’s father and brother, bassists Pino and Rocco Palladino. Discussing the album, Palladino said in a statement:

A central theme of the album is aloneness. Whether it’s a song where ’m searching for connection with someone else, or trying to embrace the aloneness, it tends to come back to me, who I am when I’m alone, what I feel when I really look inwards. I’d say it’s a pretty introspective record overall. The songs are often about trying to go deeper into yourself, exploring your true feelings and how they then relate to and affect your relationships with others.

“Stay With Me Through The Night” is the first song I wrote for the album. It was at the end of a tricky period where I hadn’t written music for nearly two years, and it came out in a bit of a flood, I barely even remember where or how I wrote it, but I knew it was going to be an important song for me. It ended up being the centrepiece of the album, a song that encapsulates a lot of the feeling and emotion of the rest of the record and musically it brings old together with new, which became a theme across the record…a way of combining my influences with a modern perspective.

Rhythmically the feeling of the song comes from funk and disco, I was thinking about the piano playing of Patrice Rushen and Michael McDonald, Chaka Khan’s ‘What Cha’ Gonna Do For Me’, Bernard Edwards bass playing on Chic’s ‘Good Times’, and The Bee Gees ‘Spirits Having Flown’ but we tried to take the track somewhere else in other aspects of the production to bring out the big feelings in the song. It situates us in the emotional world that I tried to create for the rest of the album.

Squid Release New Single ‘Fugue (Bin Song)’

Squid have dropped a new track, ‘Fugue (Bin Song)’. It arrives ahead of a North American tour in support of the band’s sophomore album, last year’s O Monolith. The track was  recorded during the sessions for the album with longtime collaborator Dan Carey at Peter Gabriel’s Real World studio. Check it out along with the list of dates below.

Water for Your Eyes will open Squid’s run of tour dates, which will feature exclusive tour merch, including a collaborative tour poster from both bands and cassette mixtapes from Squid. “It’s an antidote to the immediateness of music consumption nowadays,” the band’s Ollie Judge said in a press release. “It features music by friends and people I admire, probably best to be played at nighttime whilst sat on your favourite chair.”

Mark Knopfler Announces New Album ‘Ahead of the Game’, Releases New Song

Mark Knopfler has announced a new solo album, One Deep River, which will be released on April 12 via Blue Note/EMI. The first single, ‘Ahead of the Game’, is out today. Give it a listen and find the LP’s cover art and tracklist below.

“Crossing the Tyne is always on your mind,” Knopfler said in a statement, referring to the river that runs through his childhood home city of Newcastle. “It’s what you were doing when you were leaving as a youngster and that feeling is always the same every time you do it. You’re heading out or you’re coming back, and it just connects with your childhood. The power of it doesn’t go away.”

Chastity Belt Release New Song ‘I-90 Bridge’

Chastity Belt have dropped a new song, ‘I-90 Bridge’. It’s the second single off their upcoming album Live Laugh Love, following ‘Hollow’. Check it out below.

“I-90 Bridge’ is the fictionalized account of real times in Seattle,” the band’s Lydia Lund said in a statement. “When I wrote the chords and melody, the song felt like a classic Chastity Belt song which deserved classic Chastity Belt lyrics addressing growing pains and self reflection in Seattle.”

Live Laugh Love arrives March 29 via Suicide Squeeze Records.

Jack Antonoff Details ‘The New Look’ Soundtrack Featuring Lana Del Rey, Nick Cave, Perfume Genius, and More

Last November, it was reported that Lana Del Rey, the 1975, Nick Cave, Perfume Genius, Bleachers, Florence Welch, beabadoobee, and more recorded covers of early to mid-20th century songs for the soundtrack to the upcoming Apple TV+ series The New Look. The full tracklist for the soundtrack, which was produced and curated by Bleachers’ Jack Antonoff, has now been unveiled. Take a look below.

The first single from the soundtrack, Florence + the Machine’s rendition of ‘White Cliffs of Dover’, will be released on Wednesday, January 31.

Created by Todd A. Kessler, The New Look is a historical drama starring Ben Mendelsohn as Christian Dior and Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel. The show premieres on the streaming service on February 14, 2024.

fanclubwallet – the project of singer-songwriter Hannah Judge – has announced a new EP, Our Bodies Paint Traffic Lines, arriving March 29 via Cool Online. Check out its first single, ‘Band Like That’, below.

Our Bodies Paint Traffic Lines features fanclubwallet’s touring band: bassist Nathan Reid, guitarist Eric Graham, and drummer Michael Watson, who also produced and mixed the record. “I was lucky that when the time came to find a band, I had one standing right in front of me,” Judge commented in a statement. “It’s cool to let your best friends take the lead. They feel like my arms and my legs. Extensions of myself!”

“I had spent months studying everyone else’s bands,” Judge said of ‘Band Like That’. “What made them so good? Why couldnt I be like them?”

Bnny Announces New Album ‘One Million Love Songs’, Unveils New Single

Bnny has announced a new album: One Million Love Songs, the follow-up to 2021’s Everything, is out April 5 via Fire Talk. Check out its first single, ‘Good Stuff’, along with the album cover and tracklist below.

“It’s a breakup song, but it’s hopeful, optimistic even,”Bnny’s Jessica Viscius explained in a statement. “Or perhaps it’s just the denial, hoping things will be different next time, hoping that love can save you.”

One Million Love Songs was produced by Viscius and recorded at Drop of Sun Studios in Asheville with Alex Farrar. “I wanted to make songs that are exciting to play – songs that make me feel happy,” Viscius said in a statement. “This album is about love after loss, getting older, and just trying to have fun with a broken heart.”
