Only Murders in the Building: What We Know About Season 3

Hulu’s murder mystery Only Murders in the Building, which is also streaming on Disney+, is returning for a third season, with more murders, madness and mayhem in the works.

The series follows Charles-Hayden Savage (Steve Martin), Oliver Putnam (Martin Short) and Mabel Mora (Selena Gomez), three strangers who all live in the Arconia, an affluent Upper West Side apartment building. They are drawn together by their mutual interest in true crime and then when they are plagued by several murders that happen in their own building. This prompts them to launch a true crime podcast of their own in this meta crime fiction series.

Two weeks after the second season aired last June, Deadline reported that Hulu had already renewed the crime mystery for a third season. During the Oscars’ pre-show last week, Hulu appropriately dropped the first teaser trailer, giving us a glimpse of the new season.

“Well, you know, who are we without a homicide?” Gomez’s Mabel remarks in the opening seconds of the trailer. And she’s right. How many murders can one building have? Although a release date of the third season is not currently known, there are some things we do know about the upcoming season.

So, what do we know about the story?

Well, the second season ended on a cliff-hanger with, yes, another murder. The season finale introduced Ben Glenroy (Ant-Man’s Paul Rudd) only to kill him off in the scene.

He dies on stage during a play he is performing alongside Martin’s Charles. The show-within-a-show is directed by Short’s Oliver. And, of course, Gomez’s Mabel, a member of the audience, witnesses Ben’s death, as any murder wouldn’t be complete without all members of our trio present.

It stands to reason that the third season will pick off shortly after the cliff-hanger, with our favorite trio launching an investigation into Ben’s death and a subsequent “third season” of their podcast.

Who is slated to be in the third season?

Certainly, the podcast-producing trio, Martin, Short and Gomez, are returning. They are being joined by Rudd as the ill-fated Ben, as well as cinema legend Meryl Streep. Although there is no official word yet on who Streep is portraying, it seems from the teaser trailer that she may be playing a fellow cast member opposite Ben and Charles in the show-within-a-show. New cast members also include Jesse Williams and Ashley Park (from Netflix’s Emily in Paris)

While no other cast members have been confirmed yet, it is likely that the cast would also include Michael Cyril Creighton as Howard Morris, the cat-loving neighbor of our trio, Andrea Martin as Joy, who was introduced as Charles’s love interest in the second season, and Zoe Colleti as Lucy, the teenage daughter of Charles’s ex-girlfriend.

While the third season is currently in production, here are some photos from behind-the-scenes.

Until then, we will have to wait to hear what else is in store for the residents of the Arconia.
