Serge Beaulieu and Yelena Filipchuk are the artists responsible for HYBYCOZO, a collaborative installation art collective. Their sculptures celebrate the beauty of geometric form and pattern, combining light, shadow, and sculpture to harmonise sculpture, light, and pattern. Their work often draws inspiration from mathematics, science, and natural patterns and acknowledges the influence of diverse cultural traditions.
To talk about their process and work, they joined me for an interview.
Dimensions signifies a noteworthy milestone in your career. Can you share what inspired the theme and concept of an interstellar village for this installation?
What were some of the biggest challenges of the three years of research and development for Dimensions? What methods did you use to overcome them?
Dimensions allow visitors to walk inside some sculptures and provide a communal space for reflection. What is your approach to designing interactive elements that enhance the visitor experience
With permanent sculptures installed globally from Dubai to Las Vegas, how do different cultural contexts influence your work and how people engage with your installations?
Much of our work draws on inspirations from mathematics, science, and patterns in nature and acknowledges diverse cultural influences in pattern making and design. Geometry and pattern making serve as the backbone of our creative expression. It is the framework through which we navigate the complexities of form, proportion, and spatial relationships. Patterns, both simple and complex, have a profound impact on our perception and understanding of the world. They possess the ability to evoke a sense of order, balance, and aesthetic pleasure. Pattern making and geometry offer us a means of storytelling and communication. These patterns serve as conduits for deeper exploration, provoking introspection and contemplation to uncover the underlying symbols embedded within.
What is your take on the importance of public art, and how do you ensure that your installations are accessible and engaging to a broad audience?
Placemaking lies at the heart of our artistic practice. We believe that public art has the ability to redefine our relationship with the built environment, transforming it into a canvas for creativity, inspiration, and social interaction. By bringing art to the streets, parks, and squares, we invite individuals to pause, reflect, and engage with their surroundings in a new and meaningful way.
Ultimately, our goal is to create spaces that inspire connection and foster a sense of awe and curiosity among people. HYBYCOZO is our vessel to explore the frontiers of art, science, and human experience, and to ignite the spark of wonder that resides within us all. Our hope is to cultivate a sense of shared experience and understanding, strengthening the social fabric of communities.
