Dept. Q Season 2: Cast, Rumours & Release Date

There’s something addictive about detective shows. As a viewer, you get to follow clues, make guesses, and try to solve the case alongside the characters.

The best ones keep you coming back for more with a mix of mystery and suspense. Plus, there’s a sense of justice at the end, when you finally get answers.

That seems to be the situation with Dept. Q, a new Netflix series about a troubled detective tackling a cold case. It debuted on May 29 and quickly caught the audience’s attention, making it to the Netflix Top 10 in 72 countries. The main question is: are we getting more?

Dept. Q Season 2 Release Date

At the time of writing, Dept. Q hasn’t officially been renewed for more episodes. That said, the show has good reviews and the viewership numbers are solid, so the odds are in its favour.

Moreover, the cast seems excited to return. Lead Matthew Goode told The Hollywood Reporter the show is “begging” for a season 2, and the BBC that it’s up to the fans on whether there will be a sequel. “I’d love to do more with this,” he admitted.

As long as Netflix renews the series, we could expect Dept. Q season 2 sometime in late 2026 or early 2027.

What Could Happen in Dept. Q Season 2?

Dept Q. is set in Edinburgh and centres on once-celebrated Detective Chief Inspector Carl Morck, who is recovering following a traumatic incident. He is relegated to the newly formed Department Q, a cold case unit tucked away in a basement.

While the department is a PR effort, he finds himself working with a team of misfits who might actually shed light on long-forgotten mysteries. First on the department’s list: the perplexing four-year-old disappearance of a prosecutor.

The investigation is intricate and interesting. On top of that, the show is atmospheric, and it excellently explores the personal backstories of the main characters. As a viewer, you feel immersed in the story, excited to find out more.

Without giving away any spoilers, season 1 ends with Morck’s team solving the case. As a result, a potential Dept. Q season 2 will likely delve into a new mystery.

The show is inspired by a book series, with the second focusing on a decades-old double murder. Dept. Q might adapt that plot, while also providing additional answers about Morck’s past traumatic incident.

Is Dept. Q Based on a Book?

Yes, the show is inspired by a book series by Danish writer Jussi Adler-Olsen. However, it moves the action from Copenhagen to Scotland.

There are 11 novels in the series so far, with the first one titled The Keeper of Lost Causes (or Mercy, depending on the edition). You can find them in English.
