Miley, Bass Persuades
Miley Cyrus, who makes music as just Miley now, is back with a new album. The follow-up to 2024’s Something Beautiful features a guest appearance from experimental outfit Model/Actriz (whose frontman Cole Haden was also credited on the previous LP), as well as Miike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt. Her longtime collaborator Kid Harpoon and fiancé Maxx Morando also contributed production. “This album happened fast but that’s been my life for 20 years,” Miley wrote on Instagram. “Once I started wishing to land a role that would make LA my home it’s been nonstop. This album is a reflection of everywhere I’ve been along the way and the peace that came with starting to slow it all down. Thank you for celebrating this release with me. It’s a special record and it’s bliss to share with you.”
Carly Rae Jepsen, Day and Night
Carly Rae Jepsen’s latest outing is an ambitious double LP spanning 24 tracks, split evenly between Day and Night. The first half leans into radiant, 70s-indebted folk-pop, while the second half moves towards sleeker, dancier territory. Talking to NME about the process behind the album, Jepsen said: “The Day songs were a bit more organic in nature, with more live instruments and a little hint of my roots in folk music. But then I also wanted to go in this darker, more experimental, synth-based direction, which is [what became] the Night songs.” It was previewed by the tracks ‘On Wires’, ‘After All’, ‘Motivation’, and ‘Don’t Leave Me on the Dance Floor’.
Beck, Ride Lonesome
Beck’s first album in seven years, Ride Lonesome, has arrived.The follow-up to Hyperspace finds the singer-songwriter reuniting with the band that accompanied him on Mutations, Sea Change, and Morning Phase: Smokey Hormel, Joey Waronker, Justin Meldal-Johnsen, Roger Joseph Manning Jr., and Jason Falkner. “We had Nigel Godrich, who worked on Sea Change and Mutations with us mixing all the songs,” Beck noted. “It had been a decade since we went in the studio and recorded Morning Phase. This time It felt like the playing and the chemistry had evolved and deepened — a sound that’s come together over the decades of working together. While we were revisiting a musical and physical place, it also felt like we were finding new sounds and emotional textures along the way.”
Emma Ruth Rundle, These Killing Times
Emma Ruth Rundle has returned with a strikingly haunting new album, These Killing Times. The multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and poet is joined on the Engine of Hell follow-up by a full band that includes drummer Jess Gowrie (Chelsea Wolfe, Mrs. Piss), longtime friend and collaborator Troy Zeigler, Patrick Shiroishi, Nick Reinhart (Tera Melos), Gina Gleason (Baroness), Marissa Nadler, Lukas Frank (Storefront Church), and Amelia Baker (Cinder Well). “I wanted to feel fortified by friendships and to be in community with other musicians – to make something that pushed back against the isolation,” Rundle commented in press materials.
beabadoobee, Pylon
beabadoobee has released Pylon, the follow-up to 2024’s This Is How Tomorrow Moves. The album features contributions from Hayley Williams, Turnstile singer Brendan Yates, Pinegrove’s Evan Stephens Hall, Deftones’ Chino Moreno, and Title Fight’s Shane Mora. “I had to write these songs on tour or between tours because I had to understand what was going on in my head,” Kristi said in a press releases. “It’s this idea of letting go and accepting change. When I was on tour, I was yearning for something, and it made me think: How do I make myself feel comfortable? What does it mean to grow up? I was just missing how things were.”
Slow Pulp, Melodie
Slow Pulp expand and polish up their sound on their cathartic new album, Melodie. Following up 2023’s Yard, the record was preceded by the singles ‘Better Man’, ‘Not for Nothing’, and ‘Spill’. In the past, the band’s lyrics have mostly been penned by Emily Massey’s, but her bandmate Henry Stoehr wrote five songs on the new record. “Emily and I were reconnecting with how we wrote together when we first met,” Stoehr recalled. “There’s a very cyclical energy to a lot of these songs,” Massey added.
Babehoven, I See Them, I See Me
Babehoven have come through with their third studio album, I See Them, I See Me. The gorgeous, 14-track LP was recorded as the New York duo’s Maya Bon recovered from paralysis of her right vocal chord. “I have so much gratitude now that I am able to sing again,” she reflected. “To not only sing, but to sing with joy. I think part of the idea of ‘having fun’ with this album is trying to really enjoy what we can do, the gifts we have.” They brought in three renowned indie rock engineers to track the record: Sam Evian, Kevin Copeland, and Phil Weinrobe. “We wanted to incorporate a fresh, live, honest feel into the recordings. We actively tried to have more fun with making this album,” they said.
