Brooklyn-via-Providence math rock band Fang Island have announced a box set spanning their entire discography. Doesn’t Exist II: The Complete Recordings is slated for release on December 13 via Joyful Noise. It includes both of the band’s LPs, Fang Island and Major, as well as a 12″ record featuring 2007’s Day of the Great Leap EP, 2008’s Sky Gardens EP, and demos of their debut EP Doesn’t Exist. The band has also released a video for ‘Starquake’, their final song, directed by guitarist Chris Georges. Check it out below.
An alternate version of ‘Starquake’ was initially released on limited edition flexi-disc in 2014. The track is included on the box set as part of an exclusive 7″ that also features the Andrew W.K. collaboration ‘Patterns on the Wall’. It was written in 2006 but recorded in 2014 in one unedited take at Silent Barn’s Gravesend Studio in Brooklyn, New York.
“Despite its foreboding introduction, the track settles into a positive if frantic loop, orbiting a bolstering and reliable core,” singer-guitarist Jason Bartell commented. “With each rotation another hooky adornment is affixed, elongating and warping the orbit until it can no longer maintain its shape, hurtling into the deep black unknown of space, only to find a harmonious new resting place.”
