Junior Boys are back. Jeremy Greenspan and Matt Didemus will release a new album, The Gore, on February 12 via City Slang. The follow-up to 2022’s Waiting Game is led by the eerily hypnotic ‘Underneath the Moon’, which comes paired with a video directed by John Smith. Check it out below, and scroll down for the album cover and tracklist.
“This song is deeply inspired by the 2022 horror film Skinamarink,” Greenspan explained in a press release. “I used old tape loop techniques using an old Tascam tape machine to achieve a number of the effects in the film, to work as a sort of homage to the ephemeral quality of analog recording tech.”
The record, as a whole, draws from Greenspan’s lifelong fascination with experimental film, horror, and science fiction. It was also informed by the loss of his father and a close friend. Comparing the new album to Waiting Game, he described it as “a polarized articulation of the same thing, something about Silence, Serenity, Terror and Time, both circular and unending.”
“I have tried very hard to buck the maximalist trends of modern production and emphasize as full a spectrum of dynamics as I can,” Greenspan added. “Loudness is not a bad word — there are many exciting things to be done musically with intensity and noise — but loudness is often a wall, a force that separates instead of invites.”
