“‘Sick Of The Blues’ is about being heartbroken and taking back some joy, remembering that you’re the source of your own happiness, not someone else, even when you’re hurt and left with a hole in your heart,” bandleader Dana Margolin explained in a statement. “After being messed around enough, you just want to take back control. I just wanted to let it go, stop letting it consume me. I wanted simplicity, to have fun and remember everything good that could possibly happen. To love wholly, to not take anything too seriously. To have fun with my friends, to remove the tunnel vision and fall in love with my life again.”
The new album was produced by Dom Monks and recorded in Frome, England at the beginning of 2024. “We’ve always been known as a band who do something very particular and very emotionally intense live, and Dom (Monks) knew how to get that feeling across,” Margolin said.
“It feels like the first time we’ve made something,” she added. “It captured something about our friendship as a band and the way that we have learnt to play together. It’s taught me so much. Following your gut to the nth point, trusting your friends and their loyalty, trusting yourself to be able to fight with people properly and still come back together. How I want to live is how I want to make records, because making records is my life because my work is my play is my job is my life. It all ties together in this thing, and there are ways to do this that might not kill me.”

Pom Pom Squad have announced their sophomore LP, Mirror Starts Moving Without Me. The follow-up to 2021’s Death of a Cheerleader comes out October 25 via City Slang Records. It’s already been previewed by last month’s ‘Downhill’, and a new single called ‘Spinning’ is out today, along with a video directed by frontperson Mia Berrin and Benjamin Lieber. Check it out below and scroll down for the album cover and tracklist.
“The song represents a moment when I was learning to cope with painful memories of the past and how they’ve shaped my future,” Berrin said in a statement about ‘Spinning’. “In accepting them, I’ve been able to find more freedom and forgiveness within myself.”
“A lot of the lyrics on the album have to do with watching/analyzing yourself, so I knew I wanted to create a surveillance room setup for something,” she added of the accompanying visual. “It turned out to be a really fun home-base for the ‘Spinning’ video.”
Opening up about the album, Berrin shared: “I took a lot of inspiration from my younger self on this album. I wanted to get back in touch with my creative roots. After hitting a particularly rough bout of writer’s block, I challenged myself to make a playlist of my all-time favorite songs from childhood to adulthood. It was healing in a way I didn’t expect! Before we went into the studio I made my bandmates and Cody do the same, then we all listened to each other’s and had a long conversation about them. Through the sessions for Mirror we were all pulling references from our collective playlists more than anything else.”

Jewelry design transcends the mere creation of adornments; it embodies a fusion of artistic vision and functional craftsmanship. As an ancient art form, it has evolved from regal adornments to contemporary pieces that serve as powerful means of cultural, emotional, and personal expression. Contemporary jewelry design blends traditional techniques with innovative approaches, resulting in works that are both visually striking and deeply meaningful. Artists explore new materials and techniques to craft unique pieces that reflect their vision while resonating with viewers.
In this dynamic field, Suyu Chen stands out with her distinctive approach. Her recent collection, “A Study of Snow,” epitomizes this fusion of tradition and innovation. Chen’s jewelry reflects a contemplative exploration of man-made objects discarded and buried in deep snow. Her pieces, characterized by bold, chunky forms and matte white surfaces marked by scratches that reveal subtle, layered colors underneath, capture the essence of abandoned landscapes. Suyu’s recent invited show, Cluster Jewellery Fair in London, has presented this series of contemporary jewelry titled ‘A Study of Snow’. The collection has been travelled to various countries, first showcased in the Gioielli in Fermento 20/21 exhibition in Milan, Italy, then it had been to China for Beijing International Jewellery Exhibition, among many more destinations. Chen’s work demonstrates her ability to navigate between tradition and contemporary craft practice.

Born in 1992 in Guangzhou, China, Suyu witnessed the development of factories and the evolution of craft industry in the area. Influenced by contemporary artists such as Agnes Martin and Sol LeWitt, Chen’s jewelry pieces narrate a dialogue between industrial materials and the human touch. Through subtle color changes and meticulous mark-making on the material surface, she invites wearers to contemplate the delicate balance between art, craft, and personal expression. Each piece tells a story of transformation, taking inspirations both from the natural world and man-made items.

From her studies at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, China, to earning her Master of Fine Arts at the Rochester Institute of Technology, US, the artist often explores raw materials and found objects, while merges uncommon materials with traditional metalsmithing. In Chen’s current work, the combination of PVC and silver is the most appealing and innovate element. Through her unique crafting and coloring process on plastic pipe and precious metals, Chen always gave her one-of-a-kind piece an elegant and minimal look with a sense of serenity and comfort from a nature-inspired color plate. Exhibiting her works locally and internationally over 40 times, including in North America, Europe and East Asia, has allowed her to engage with diverse audiences and cultural perspectives, enriching her artist practice.

Chen’s artistic influence extended beyond the confines of her studio. Her participation in education as an adjunct faculty in university and a jury member in prestigious events such as the A’Design Award highlights her expertise and recognition within the art community. Additionally, as a member in professional organizations like Klimt02 and the Society of North American Goldsmiths highlights her dedication to furthering collaboration in the field of contemporary jewelry art.

Looking ahead, Chen’s future projects are driven by a commitment to further exploring the intersections of art, craft, and sustainability. Her focus will extend to topics of modern craft making involving both machine and human labor, globalization, and the aesthetic influences by social media. Through ongoing exhibitions, collaborations, and exploration of new materials and techniques, she aims to challenge perceptions and spark meaningful conversations about the role of art in shaping our understanding of the world. Through Chen’s hands, jewelry becomes a metaphorical object charged with personal expressions.
