Watch the National Perform ‘Space Invader’ on ‘Colbert’

The National performed ‘Space Invader’ on last night’s episode of The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, which welcomed David Letterman back to the Ed Sullivan Theater for the first time in seven years. Watch the performance below.

Earlier this year, Letterman talked about his love for the National, calling them “your saddest friend’s favorite band.” He even said, “I wish I could be Matt Berninger because nobody’s cooler than Matt Berninger, and they ought to be in the Hall of Fame.”

The National were on tour in Asia when Letterman suggested they appear on the show, but they flew back from Mumbai specifically for Letterman’s return. “I said, ‘What about the National?'” the comedian explained during the episode. “Because I had just spent some time with them recently and I’d been to a show recently and really just kind of fallen in love with their music. It’s tremendous… They did two shows in Mumbai last night, but they’re here.”

‘Space Invader’ appears on Laugh Track, the National’s second album of 2023, following First Two Pages of Frankenstein.
