Borderlands 4: Release Date and Rumours

The developers of Borderlands 4 have promised “more guns than we can even count” in the explosive new game, and the game is coming sooner than many expected.

Fans of the series can expect the same bombastic visuals and witty humour they love from previous Borderlands games, while also being gifted improved features like a new-look skill tree and a host of new weapons. Here’s what we know so far:

Release Date and Consoles:

The game is set to be released on September 23, 2025, coming earlier than many fans expected. The release date means it’s likely to face stiff competition in the market with GTA6, touted as the biggest game release of all time, being set for a fall release window.

The game will be only be released on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, disappointing fans of the series who have been used to playing on MacOS and Nintendo Switch devices in previous years.

New Features and Gameplay:

The developers have kept details of the game sparse, but what we do know is that the game will follow a similar structure to previous iterations, staying true to its looter shooter roots and letting the player “assume the role of a legendary Vault Hunter” as you mow down “hordes of enemies in search of new treasures”.

Gearbox are being careful to ensure a balance of complexity and accessibility, allowing beginners to pick the game up and have fun immediately without making it too easy to the point of putting veteran gamers off.

In an inteview with GamesRadar+, senior project producer Anthony Nicholson assured fans that the “the humor and comedic opportunities we explored in Borderlands 2″ will remain central to the games atmoshphere, as will be the titles signature weapons loadout with “billions of weapons and accessories for players to acquire”. Additionally, the developers aim to give fans an “unprecedented level of expression” through the implementation of the “deepest and [most] diverse skill trees of any Borderlands title yet”.

The game will be set on an “all-new planet”, shocking fans who have grown used to the planet seen in the original Borderlands trilogy and its spin off Tales from the Borderlands.

Fan Theories and Rumours:

The Borderlands games are surrounded by avid fans who have already started theorising about what the new game could bring. Of their theories, some believe the new iteration will bring back an iconic villain of the series, and even complete a story line many believed to have been forgotten for over a decade.

Eagle-eyed fans of the series have spotted that during the trailer a brief frame shows a mans face with the vaults logo superimposed over the top of it. It turns out that the positioning of the logo perfectly aligns with the iconic injury suffered by the main villain of Borderlands 2, Handsome Jack at the hands of Lilith, the games main protagonist.

Many fans hope this easter egg is pointing towards a possible return for the villains return, despite his death earlier in the series.
