Based on the novel of the same name, My Brilliant Career introduces Sybylla, who is keen to write her own story rather than let others have a say.
With 3.1 million views this week, the coming-of-age drama is among the most-watched shows on Netflix. Moreover, it made the top 10 in 54 countries. Does that mean a follow-up might be on the horizon? Here’s what we know so far.

Netflix hasn’t announced plans for My Brilliant Career season 2. However, that doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

What Is My Brilliant Career About?
Set at the turn of the 20th century, My Brilliant Career revolves around Sybylla. An independent young woman, she is determined to become a writer at a time when women are expected to marry and accept lives that were chosen for them.
When her wealthy grandmother invites Sybylla to live at her grand estate, she leaves her family’s struggling farm in the Australian bush and enters high society. While her family views the opportunity as a means for Sybylla to secure a rich husband, she hopes it will help her kickstart her career.
Before long, Sybylla is drawn to the handsome foreman of her grandmother’s estate, Frank, and local society celebrity Harry. Can love and ambition co-exist after all? You’ll need to tune in to find out.
Without spoiling too much, Sybylla grows a lot over the course of the show’s first season. In the finale, she makes an important decision about her future. It’s a satisfying ending, but it also leaves viewers excited to find out what happens next.
“I want to see this character in other landscapes being challenged by other environments. Where will she go? Which train will she go on next? What will she learn next from a different environment? I think it’s a character that’s [ripe] for new landscapes,” series lead Philippa Northeast told TV Insider.
The show is based on a novel by Miles Franklin, who also penned a sequel, My Career Goes Bung. In other words, we’re sure there’s enough material for My Brilliant Career season 2. Whether Netflix gives the green light, it remains to be seen.
