Marvel’s Wolverine PS5: Release Date, Story, Trailers and Latest News

Marvel’s Wolverine for the PlayStation 5 is just what the doctor ordered, serving up a brutal, bloody and unapologetically violent take on the clawed Marvel anti-hero we had always been waiting for. Over the years, there haven’t been nearly enough good Wolverine games and the last one that (somewhat) came close was Raven Software’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine all the way back in 2009. Now, Insomniac Games, the studio behind the acclaimed Spider-Man games on the PlayStation, is leading the charge, bringing its knack for rich, character-driven storytelling into Logan’s world. And from the little we’ve seen so far, Marvel’s Wolverine looks drenched in gory combat, barbed one-liners, and the kind of raw, violent energy that feels unmistakably Wolverine. So, when does Marvel’s Wolverine come out, and what’s the story going to be about? Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming PlayStation 5 exclusive.

Marvel’s Wolverine PS5: Release Date and Platforms

As of writing, Insomniac Games hasn’t announced an exact release date for Marvel’s Wolverine, but the studio did share a release window for the game. During September’s PlayStation State of Play this year, the devs confirmed that Marvel’s Wolverine will be clawing its way onto the PlayStation 5 in Fall 2026, likely sometime around mid-October, if the studio’s past releases are anything to go by. As for the platforms the game will be releasing on, it should come as no surprise that Marvel’s Wolverine will launch exclusively on PS5 and PS5 Pro, given that Insomniac is a Sony-owned studio. Still, with Sony steadily bringing its exclusives to PC, Marvel’s Wolverine could eventually get the same treatment, though probably not before 2028.

Marvel’s Wolverine PS5: Story and Trailers

We currently don’t have an official synopsis for Marvel’s Wolverine, which isn’t surprising given that the game is still more than half a year out. But between the two trailers and leaked internal details from the ransomware leaks, there’s enough to start piecing things together. Sony has hinted at what might be in store via its PlayStation blog, saying, “In this global thriller, Wolverine’s search for answers will send him on perilous excursions to exotic locales, including the island nation of Madripoor, the frosted wilderness of Canada, and the narrow city streets of Tokyo – all potential battlegrounds for fierce, bloody, destructive action.”

The first reveal trailer gave us a gritty, no-nonsense first look at Logan as well as the overall world and vibe of the game. We only see Logan from behind, who’s wearing a plaid shirt and a cowboy hat, peacefully nursing a drink after clearing out a room full of goons, at the Princess Bar in Madripoor. The under-a-minute trailer ends with one of the remaining goons sneaking up on Logan from behind with his knife, compelling our man to unleash his claws. For eagle-eyed fans, there’s also a neat little Easter egg tucked in. The bar where Logan is sitting features a license plate that reads “HLK 181,” a nod to The Incredible Hulk #181, Wolverine’s first comic appearance. Is a Hulk cameo incoming in some form? One can only hope.

More recently, the developers dropped a second trailer with the description, “Become a living weapon. As he searches for answers about his past, Wolverine will do whatever it takes – unleashing brutal claw combat, violent rage, and relentless determination – to cut through the mystery of the man he used to be.” The gameplay trailer makes it clear that Insomniac is going all in on a more violent, bloodier, and maturer story that’s far removed from anything we’ve seen from the Spider-Man developer before. We see Logan ripping and stabbing enemies straight through the head, riding a motorcycle off a cliff, facing down a Sentinel, and, best of all, donning the classic yellow-and-black suit from his earliest comic book days. The trailer even teases appearances from Omega Red and Mystique, which we think might just be the tip of the iceberg.

While nothing has been confirmed surrounding the game’s cast or potential cameos, the ransomware leaks that surfaced late last year do offer some interesting details. Per the leaks, Jean Grey and Mister Sinister are set to appear in Marvel’s Wolverine, with Krizia Bajos and Troy Baker voicing the two, respectively. Since the studio acknowledged the leak and several images match what we’ve seen so far, it wouldn’t be shocking if these rumours turn out to be accurate. That said, take all of this with a grain of salt, as nothing has been officially announced just yet.

Marvel’s Wolverine PS5: Gameplay Details

Given that we’ve seen very little so far, it’s hard to say how Marvel’s Wolverine will play. However, Insomniac has shared the kind of tone and gameplay it’s aiming for and how it intends to bring that to life. Per a PlayStation Blog post, “Marvel’s Wolverine is a standalone game being directed by Brian Horton (creative director) and Cameron Christian (game director), who recently led the creative efforts on Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, a game we’re extremely proud of at Insomniac.”  The blog further went on to add, “In the vein of our Spider-Man games, our goal here is to not only respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular, but also look for opportunities to make it feel fresh and truly reflect the Insomniac spirit. Even though Marvel’s Wolverine is very early in development, from what I’ve seen of its emotional narrative and cutting-edge gameplay (see what I did there?), the team is already creating something truly special.”

Much like Insomniac’s Spider-Man titles, Marvel’s Wolverine also won’t tie into the MCU or the older Fox X-Men films. And for anyone hoping Hugh Jackman might return, you’re out of luck, as Logan will instead be voiced and portrayed by Australian actor Liam McIntyre. PlayStation is billing the project as “the ultimate Wolverine fantasy built on Insomniac staples like fast, fluid, and ferocious combat, action-packed set pieces, and a darker, more brutal tone than our previous games,” with Wolverine using his adamantium claws and berserker rage to rip through enemies. In the studio’s own words, “We’re breaking new ground with Wolverine, yes, but our penchant for telling stories about heroes overcoming colossal odds is as strong as ever. We’re eager to explore Logan’s story with you and tap into his signature spin on heroism, which is much darker and more brutal than you might expect from Insomniac.”

Beyond the trailers and plot elements, Insomniac has also revealed a few technical updates about how Marvel’s Wolverine will take advantage of the PS5 Pro’s additional horsepower. Mike Fitzgerald, Core Technology Director at Insomniac Games, revealed via the PlayStation Blog that they are updating several of their games to take advantage of the PS5 Pro, saying, “We’re excited to spend even more time finding new ways we can leverage PS5 Pro on both these existing titles [Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered, Miles Morales, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, and Marvel’ss Spider-Man 2] and future games like Marvel’s Wolverine.”
