There’s more to Netflix’s latest sea monster story than meets the eye. Below, which recently dropped on the streaming service, is an engrossing tale of family and community. The fact that it also sends a powerful message about climate change is the cherry on top.
With 17 million views this week, the Canadian thriller is the most-watched show on the platform, globally. It’s also #1 in 53 countries. Does that mean a follow-up is on the way? Here’s what we know so far.
Below Season 2 Release Date
At the time of writing, there’s no news about a potential Below season 2.
The thriller is listed as a limited series, and the people involved seem satisfied with the ending.
“The story works very well on its own. I don’t think there are any plans [for more seasons]. I know [creator Jesse McKeown] has moved on to something else. All the actors have moved on to other things. I’ve moved on to other things,” star Josh Hartnett told Men’s Health.
That said, viewership numbers are strong. If people keep tuning in and Below becomes a global phenomenon, anything is possible. For now, the six available episodes will have to do.

What Is Below About?
Below is set in a remote fishing village called Snook’s Arm. At the centre of the story is Calvin, a fisherman trying to keep his struggling community together. The town faces an uncertain future as a wealthy clan pushes for a controversial resettlement deal.
Calvin has his own painful history to contend with. Decades earlier, his family was forced out of their original home. During the journey, a force dragged their floating house beneath the water, killing Calvin’s father. Calvin cut the rope connecting the house to the boat to save the rest of his family, but he has spent his life believing he was responsible for his father’s death.
Now, strange events are unfolding once again. An iceberg appears in the harbor, and a sea creature attacks people and boats. At the same time, residents experience disturbing symptoms, including an unbearable thirst and a weird urge to plunge into the ocean.
When a marine researcher arrives to investigate, she joins forces with Calvin to understand what lurks beneath the surface. Unfortunately, the creature is only part of the problem, as the community is about to find out.
By the time the six episodes wrap up, viewers get closure about the main mystery and learn the town’s fate. Still, the final moments hint there are more horrors to come. This could simply act like a warning or create the basis for a follow-up. Whether or not Below season 2 happens, we’ll have to wait and see.
