Beyoncé Releasing New Album ‘Renaissance’ Next Month

Beyoncé is returning with a new project titled Renaissance, which is set to arrive on July 29, her official website, social media bios, and posts by various streaming services suggest. The follow-up to 2016’s Lemonade apparently comprises 16 tracks and is subtitled ‘act: 1’, though it is unclear if the full project will be released on July 29 or if there are more installments to come.

Beyoncé teased the new record last summer in an interview with Harper’s Bazaar. “With all the isolation and injustice over the past year, I think we are all ready to escape, travel, love, and laugh again,” she said. “I feel a renaissance emerging, and I want to be part of nurturing that escape in any way possible. I’ve been in the studio for a year and a half. Sometimes it takes a year for me to personally search through thousands of sounds to find just the right kick or snare. One chorus can have up to 200 stacked harmonies. Still, there’s nothing like the amount of love, passion, and healing that I feel in the recording studio. After 31 years, it feels just as exciting as it did when I was nine years old. Yes, the music is coming!”

Back in November 2021, Beyoncé shared the song ‘Be Alive’ as part of the soundtrack for the Venus and Serena Williams biopic King Richard.

Katy J Pearson Releases New Song ‘Float’

Katy J Pearson has shared ‘Float’, the latest single off her forthcoming album Sound of the Morning. The track, which follows previous offerings ‘Talk Over Town’, ‘Alligator’, and ‘Game of Cards’, features black midi’s Morgan Simpson on drums and was co-written with Pet Shimmers frontman Oliver Wilde. “I wrote this track with Oliver Wilde, a founding member of the excellent Pet Shimmers – he’s been at the centre of the Bristol music community for several years,” Pearson said in a press release. “For the new album, I wanted to collaborate with some of my peers that I admire, so I jammed with Oli for a few weeks – he’d come round with his laptop and interface and we’d write songs together. ‘Float’ is one of the tracks that came out of those writing sessions and as soon as we wrote it I knew that it had to be on the record; it was one of my favourites to write and I love it. It has such an atmosphere and I think you can really feel the emotion and pain of the song; it’s about life experiences and all the things that lead up to certain moments. It’s quite nostalgic and given the past two years we have had, references wondering about when things will become more stable again.”

Sound of the Morning comes out July 8 via Heavenly Recordings.

beabadoobee has shared a new single from her forthcoming album, Beatopia – out July 15 via Dirty Hit. Her latest is called ’10:36′, and it follows earlier cuts ‘Talk’, ‘Lovesong’, and ‘See You Soon’. Listen to it below.

“‘10:36’ was written after Fake It Flowers and just before Our Extended Play, and I had envisioned it to be on that EP, but I was just sitting on that riff for ages and then I properly made a demo during lockdown,” beabadoobee explained in a statement. “It was called ‘10:36’ because that was the time I finished writing it. It’s basically about how I have this weird dependency on human contact to sleep.”

BFI Invests Over £1 Million in 15 New Animation Projects

As part of the latest round of the BFI Short Form Animation Fund, the BFI will invest £1.1 million in 15 original, bold and ambitious animation projects. As part of the Fund’s second round, the BFI partnered with StoryFutures Academy, the National Centre for Immersive Storytelling, to support two immersive virtual or augmented reality projects from a slate of 15. A total of ten projects received up to £120k for production, and another five received up to £10k for development.

With National Lottery funding of about £25 million per year, the BFI Film Fund supports filmmakers who have diverse, bold, and distinctive projects, with progressive ideas that reflect people of all backgrounds.

Talking about the investment Natascha Wharton, Head of Editorial, BFI Film Fund, said: “The BFI Short Form Animation Fund, made possible thanks to National Lottery funding, was designed to enable our talented UK animators to develop their practice, so it is exciting we are starting to see those films showcased and celebrated at international festivals. With round two, we saw a real breadth of styles and ideas come through in the applications, and we’re delighted to be unveiling such a diverse slate of projects today.”

Santigold Announces New Album ‘Spirituals’, Shares Video for New Song ‘Ain’t Ready’

Santigold has announced her fourth album, Spirituals, which will be out on September 9. To accompany the announcement, Santigold has shared a video for the new single ‘Ain’t Ready’, which follows the recently released ‘High Priestess’. Discussing the new track in a statement, Santigold said:

‘Ain’t Ready’ is a song I started with Illangelo. Dre Skull and Sbtrkt came on board to help bring it home, another true collaboration of such distinct and amazing talent. It was one of those songs where as soon as I opened my mouth the whole melody just poured out. There were no words but all the emotion was there. To me, the song sounded full of struggle and perseverance. It sounded like a battle, and I wanted the production to sound tough, to mirror that grit. I struggled to find the right lyrics at first, but when I got them right, and I started singing them one night in my studio alone, I cried. This song was my own battle song. It’s about taking the hits that life brings and getting back up. It’s about change and moving forward. It’s about faith and vision. And it’s about stepping into your own power.

Also featuring contributions from Rostam, Boys Noize, and others, Spirituals was mostly recorded during lockdown in 2020. “All of a sudden there I was with three small children out of school—just-turned-two-year-old twins and a six-year-old—I was cooking, cleaning, doing laundry and changing diapers from morning to night, with three little kids coming in and out of my bed throughout each night like musical chairs,” Santigold explained. “I was losing touch with the artist me, stuck in a part of myself that was too small. I felt the other parts of me were shrinking, disappearing.”

She continued: “Recording this album was a way back to myself after being stuck in survival mode. It wasn’t until I made the space to create that I realized I wasn’t only creating music but a lifeline. I’d never written lyrics faster in my life. After having total writer’s block, they started pouring out. I decided to create the future, to look towards where we are going, to create beauty and pull towards that beauty. I need that for myself, but it’s also there for whoever else needs it.”

Ahead of the release of his new album Ugly Season this Friday (June 17), Perfume Genius has today shared its accompanying short film, Pygmalion’s Ugly Season. Featuring music from the album, the 30-minute film is a collaboration with visual artist Jacolby Satterwhite. Check it out below.

Ugly Season was written for Perfume Genius and choreographer Kate Wallich’s immersive dance piece, The Sun Still Burns Here, which was performed in various cities in the US throughout 2019. The LP was produced with longtime collaborator Blake Mills, with contributions from Hadreas’ longtime partner Alan Wyffels.
