Mitski has released a new video for ‘Star’, a single from her 2023 album The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We. It’s directed by Maegan Houang, who worked with Mitski on the videos for Puberty 2’s ‘Happy’ and Laurel Hell’s ‘The Only Heartbreaker’ and ‘Stay Soft’. The clip was filmed on a small pond overnight and finds Mitski performing on a boat amongst painted pieces of wood. Watch it below.
“Unlike the more narrative/concept driven videos Mitski and I have done together in the past, I wanted this video to encapsulate the impressionistic circularity we all experience,” Houang explained in a statement. “Our lives oscillate between light and dark repeating itself in an endless cycle where nothing is permanent. “I wrote ‘Seafood’ from the perspective of characters in the seafood industry: fishermen, suppliers, restaurant workers, and at-home cooks,” Michael Doherty explained in a statement. “I was feeling particularly romantic about seafood at the time, and the song well encapsulates that headspace. In a similar way that writing about music came up on our first album, writing about food feels natural to me.
“Also we’re so lucky to have one of our biggest influences, Chris Weisman, playing the Yamaha Venova so beautifully on this song,” he continued. “That’s the instrument you’re hearing that sounds like a soprano saxophone. Truly a dream come true to have his playing on one of our recordings, thank you Chris!”
Staples Jr. Singers – the family gospel trio of siblings Edward Brown, R.C. Brown, and Annie Brown Caldwell – have announced their first new album in almost 50 years, Searching. Following their 1975 debut When Do We Get Paid, which was reissued by the Luaka Bop label in 2022, the LP is set for release on June 14. Searching was recorded by Ahmed Gallab, who performs as Sinkane, and engineered by Albert Di Fiore. The rhythm section is made up of R.C’s son Gary, his grandson Jaylin, and Edward’s son Troy. “The process was very easy,” Gallab said in a press release. “There’s nothing like a family bond/band. It was so special to watch how locked into each other everyone was. You can hear and feel that on this record.”
“It was good to be able to go back and look back over our life,” Annie Brown Caldwell shared. “Some of the same songs that we had sung, those songs have a new meaning to me.”
“I feel like I was able to witness part of this family’s continued story and legacy in real time,” Gallab added. “That was a very special thing to witness.”
