Stoner Comedies Up in Smoke: The Quiet Death of the “Stoner” Movie Genre

In the hazy cloud of cinema history, the “stoner” movie genre emerged as a distinct and
beloved category, capturing the counterculture spirit of the late ’60s and ’70s. Classic films
like “Up in Smoke” and “Dazed and Confused” celebrated the quirks and adventures of
characters immersed in the world of cannabis. However, as we traverse the cinematic
landscape of the 21st century, the prevalence of this genre seems to have faded, leaving us
to ponder: What happened to the “stoner” movie genre?

The Birth of a Genre: Classic Stoner Films

In the late ’60s and early ’70s, a wave of counterculture sentiments swept through American society. This cultural shift found expression in cinema through the emergence of the “stoner” movie genre. Films during this era celebrated nonconformity, rebellion, and the liberating effects of cannabis. Two iconic films that defined this genre were “Up in Smoke” (1978) and “Dazed and Confused” (1993).

“Up in Smoke,” directed by Lou Adler and starring the legendary Cheech Marin and Tommy
Chong, is considered one of the pioneers of the stoner comedy. The film follows the
misadventures of Pedro De Pacas and Man Stoner, played by Chong and Cheech, as they
embark on a road trip laced with humor and, of course, a fair amount of cannabis
consumption.

“Dazed and Confused,” directed by Richard Linklater, transported audiences to the last day
of high school in 1976. Fueled by a killer soundtrack and an ensemble cast that included
Matthew McConaughey and Ben Affleck, the film captured the essence of the ’70s youth
culture and its affinity for marijuana.

The Rise of the Modern Stoner Film

In the late ’90s and early 2000s, the stoner movie genre experienced a resurgence, but with a modern twist. Films like “Half Baked” (1998) and “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” (2004) continued the tradition of celebrating cannabis culture while adapting to the
sensibilities of a new generation.

“Half Baked,” featuring comedian Dave Chappelle, took a comedic look at the consequences
of selling marijuana to raise money for a friend’s bail. The film embraced a mix of absurdity
and wit that resonated with audiences, becoming a cult classic in the process.

“Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle,” directed by Danny Leiner, followed two friends on a
quest for the perfect burgers, navigating a series of comically exaggerated misadventures
fueled by their quest for munchies. The film’s success led to sequels and firmly established a new wave of stoner comedies.

The Changing Landscape: Why Stoner Films Are Less Common Now

Despite their cultural impact and cult followings, stoner films have become less prevalent in
recent years. Several factors contribute to this decline:

Changing Societal Attitudes: The evolving attitudes toward cannabis in society may be one
of the primary reasons for the decline in stoner films. As cannabis legalization gains
momentum globally, the counterculture image associated with these films becomes less
rebellious and more mainstream. Legalization has paved the way for cannabis cultivation at
home, it’s no longer taboo to buy marijuana seeds and grow cannabis at home.

Diversification of Genres: The film industry has diversified, and genres have become more
nuanced and inclusive. Filmmakers are exploring a broader range of themes and
perspectives, moving away from the stereotypical portrayal of stoners.

Cultural Sensitivity: The rise of cultural sensitivity has led to a reevaluation of certain
stereotypes perpetuated by stoner films. Filmmakers today are more conscious of how they
represent various subcultures, including cannabis enthusiasts, and strive for more authentic
and respectful portrayals.

Shift in Comedy Styles: Comedy trends have evolved, and filmmakers are exploring different comedic styles that may not necessarily rely on the stoner trope. Dark humor, satire, and socially conscious comedy have gained prominence in recent years.

Cannabis Mainstreaming: With the increasing acceptance and mainstreaming of cannabis,
the rebellious and countercultural aspects that defined classic stoner films have diminished.
Cannabis is now portrayed in a variety of contexts, from medical dramas to sophisticated
character studies.

Contemporary Takes on Cannabis: Subdued, Nuanced, and Realistic

While the classic stoner film may be less common, contemporary filmmakers are still
exploring cannabis-related themes in more subdued and nuanced ways. Films like
“Pineapple Express” (2008), directed by David Gordon Green and produced by Judd
Apatow, and “The End of the Tour” (2015), directed by James Ponsoldt, offer more complex
and realistic portrayals of cannabis use.

“Pineapple Express” follows a process server and his dealer as they become entangled in a
drug war after witnessing a murder. The film combines action, comedy, and unexpected
depth, moving beyond the stereotypical stoner comedy.

“The End of the Tour” takes a different approach, delving into the real-life conversations
between journalist David Lipsky and acclaimed author David Foster Wallace during a road
trip. Cannabis use is portrayed as a casual and authentic part of the characters’ lives rather
than a central focus.

The ebbing prominence of the classic stoner movie genre doesn’t mark the conclusion of
cannabis-related storytelling in cinema. Rather, it signifies a shift in the portrayal of cannabis culture, adapting to societal changes and a more sophisticated cinematic landscape. While the era of archetypal stoner films may be in the rearview mirror, the legacy persists in contemporary films that approach cannabis with greater nuance and realism, reflecting the evolving interplay between cinema and society.

PACKS are gearing up to release their second album in the span of a year, Melt the Honey, on January 19 through Fire Talk. Today, they’ve shared a new single from it, ‘HFCS’, following ‘Honey’. Check it out below.

Speaking about the new track, Madeline Link said in a statement: “Why do people gamble? Why do people take leaps of faith? Why do people like winning? Why do people drink coke? Why is corn such a heavily subsidized crop for U.S. farmers? Why are you addicted to that thing you wish you wouldn’t do but that you can’t help but do?”

How to Recognize Sports Betting and Online Gaming Scam Sites

In online betting and gambling, caution should be the first priority. While many legitimate platforms offer exciting opportunities, a darker side also exists – scam sites designed to exploit unsuspecting users. Recognizing the red flags and knowing what to look for can be the difference between a safe, enjoyable experience and falling victim to fraudulent activities. This guide aims to empower you with the knowledge and tools needed to identify sports betting and online gaming scam sites, allowing you to make informed choices and protect your interests while engaging in these activities.

User Reviews and Reputation

User reviews can be powerful tools in gauging the legitimacy of an online gaming or sports betting site. Search for reviews on reputable review platforms, forums, and social media to get insights into the experiences of other users. Legitimate sites usually have positive reviews, while scam sites may be associated with complaints about withheld winnings, poor customer service, or other suspicious activities.

Keep in mind that some fraudulent sites might attempt to manipulate reviews or create fake positive feedback. Cross-reference information from multiple sources to build a more accurate picture of a site’s reputation. If a platform has a history of dissatisfied users or lacks a substantial online presence, it’s advisable to proceed with caution.

Responsive Customer Support

Legitimate gaming and betting platforms prioritize customer satisfaction and provide responsive customer support. They offer multiple communication channels, such as live chat, email, and phone support, and respond promptly to user inquiries. On the other hand, scam sites may have unresponsive or generic customer support that fails to address users’ concerns adequately.

Before engaging with a site, test customer support by asking questions about their services or policies. Evaluate the speed and effectiveness of their responses. If a platform is evasive, unhelpful, or slow to respond, it may be a red flag indicating potential fraudulent activity.

Trusted Platforms

There are trusted review sites, specialized forums, and active communities on social media. With insights from totomawang.net, you can be guaranteed to get a legitimate website that will offer you real winnings and bonuses. Here, you will also get guidance on what other users encounter. The sites’ credibility is mainly dependent on such platforms. Reputable review sites hire experts to evaluate different elements of a site, such as user interface, customer care, and money transfer processes. Using specialized forums allows users to share their experiences, from fairness in the game to reliable payouts. People in active communities on social media platforms share their collective knowledge, participate in discussions, raise questions, and get instant advice from others.

Licensing and Regulation

For any website to operate, obtaining a legitimate license from the relevant authorities is a fundamental requirement. This process involves seeking approval and authorization from governing bodies that oversee gambling and gaming activities. When a website is legit, they will appreciate the need to abide by government laws. It is law-abiding and provides a safe platform for its users.

Users must look at the certificate info generally placed at the footer and verify the site’s regulatory status. Verify each detail, especially for players who prefer utilizing overseas sports betting websites. This will help you determine a website’s authenticity and regulatory compliance. Individuals must scrutinize this data so that it is done per the laws and regulations governing the industry.

Check which board governs sports betting and online gambling in your area, for instance, the Korea Racing Authority in South Korea or the UK Gambling Commission. Most of these legal bodies are like watchdogs meant to oversee and ensure compliance with the set industry rules by the operators. They are responsible for protecting consumer’s interests; this guarantees true experience among all players.

Audits and Fair Play Assurance

These audits assess the fairness and honesty of games, which assure that the randomness is determined by chance and not by any person’s bias. Users must seek certificates from reputable testing agencies, including eCOGRA or iTech Labs, confirming such legitimacy. Such certificates indicate that platforms are adamant about principles of fair play and give players equal chances, among other issues that boost confidence concerning the credibility of the gaming process.

Contact Information

Standard platforms value user comfort and reliability and provide straightforward and full-access contacts. Such details include a physical address, an alternative email, live chat, a help center, or a phone call. Users must communicate these avenues to solve problems or resolve account and gaming challenges. On the contrary, such sites that give only generic Email addresses or do not contain identifiable means of making contacts should be treated carefully.

The absence of a transparent system regarding contact information casts doubts on the website’s degree of involvement in providing customer support, causing speculation on whether it is aimed at hiding identities or avoiding responsibility. Users should be careful and select sites that publicly provide their contact data since such an approach shows openness and offers an opportunity for prompt help in case of necessity.

Transparency in Rules and Policies

Transparency of terms and conditions outlines the present rules, regulatory policies, and expectations on how users interact with the site. The availability and openness of these terms and conditions will be one of the differences separating authentic areas from fraudulent ones. Scammers often use vagueness and unclearness of terms and conditions in their policy while applying words that can divert the attention of potential victims from the essential main points. Look for an “About Us” section on the website that outlines the company’s history, mission, and leadership team. Legitimate platforms are proud to showcase their credentials and accomplishments, while scam sites may hide behind a veil of anonymity.

Clear Terms and Conditions

Sincere sites emphasize transparency by unambiguously expressing their terms and conditions. Such commitment entails simple language on rewards, stake procedures, exit mechanism issues, and addressing complaints, all included in a single and simple document. By giving those facts in plain terms, websites create informed options for visitors who can confidently decide.

The transparency makes it clear to users what is their involvement limit is so they feel a sense of control and awareness. This transparency builds trust and communicates fairness in the games/betting experience. Some fraudulent websites will contain a similar document, too. However, its content will change regarding payment issues or when it decides to rip you off.

Unrealistic Promotions and Bonuses

With bonuses and promotions being prevalent and driving people to a site, one must still be careful what offers are given for that site. Scam sites usually run exaggerated promotions that seem too good to be true or give overly generous bonuses. Offers could comprise extravagant prizes, a high amount of money bonus, or attractive probabilities, attracting naïve users. You must be cautious in accepting such offers.

Most reputable and well-established betting sites provide competitive promotions based on realistically framed terms and conditions. The offer should also be considered a warning signal if it looks abnormally high compared to regular pricing at reputable sites. Excessively lavish promotions suggest a bait-and-switch tactic where the promised goods never follow through.

Limited Payment Options

Reputable sportsbooks and virtual casinos provide many reliable payment options for deposits and withdrawals. Most of these platforms have adopted common forms of payment like wire transfers, e-wallets, and debit/credit cards. Limited payment options suggest that the website does not follow the industry rules or attempts to go around the existing financial system, which already creates doubts about its lawfulness.

Choose platforms with established payment options that guarantee smooth customer payments within a website’s interface. Knowing what kind of payments are being made reduces the fallout of scammers who might take advantage of less secure modes of payment. Established platforms with proven reliability process withdrawals as fast as possible, ensuring a good user experience. They provide their users with clear and understandable withdrawal procedures that list options for payment, the expected duration of such payments, and any incurred fee. These methods have built-in security measures and offer recourse in case of fraudulent activities.

Verify the SSL Certificate

An SSL Certificate ensures that a secure link between the user’s browser and the website’s server is established to protect information passed during the communication from eavesdropping by unscrupulous individuals. Users can prove a certificate is legit by clicking on the padlock in the web browser’s address bar. This will present extensive information on your certificate, like the duration of the validity period and the organization where the same was registered.

Before using a betting or gaming site, always check for “https” to ensure a secure connection. Websites with only “http://” lack encryption and pose a risk of cybercrime, making users vulnerable to personal information theft and scams. It’s crucial to avoid such sites to ensure the safety of e-payments. Additionally, both parties should utilize a private network address to secure virtual interaction.

Identify Website Mistakes

Legitimate companies know that a business’s appearance should be neat and clean for its audiences. Their approach also considers their online presence, such as website design and content. However, scammers cannot be as fussy about making them attractive or as bothered about the perfect content with no errors. A poorly written article with careless mistakes suggests an unprofessional attitude towards details.

Reliable platforms tend to employ serious professionals for web content development and design to demonstrate this effect. As such, coming across a site with many misspellings or grammatical mistakes should be seen as a warning sign, and users should take time to undertake additional background checks before accessing the site.

Unhealthy Advertisement

Most users want to visit a particular website without pressure and usually avoid illegitimate sites. Some less scrupulous operators are found in unsent emails or pop-ups promoting their betting or gaming sites. Unsolicited messages can have deceiving claims and even provide links to scam sites.

Users have to remain wary and should not click through any links or provide personal details responding to such unrequested content. Instead, people should look for reputable mediums by themselves. This helps to reduce the chances of being scammed by avoiding spam email pop-ups and only playing online through reliable gaming sites that will not compromise the user’s security.

Trust Your Instincts

Intuition can be an essential guide, giving hints concerning quantitative analysis that may not appear obvious. Acting on instinct when a betting or gaming site evokes discomfort or insecurity is advisable. Red flags include obscure terms and conditions, questionable promotions, and ambiguous company identity information. It is safe if one takes it slow in such circumstances.

Go for other more secure and reliable alternatives rather than continuing cautiously. Carefully read the terms and conditions of the platform. Ensure you understand how transactions, bonuses, and dispute resolutions are handled. If anything seems unclear or overly complicated, consider it a warning sign. Allowing instincts to guide them to make the right choices about the safety and privacy of their details is a significant step that empowers users to control their online lives.

Clear Responsible Gambling Policies

Realistic platforms show concern about the well-being of their users through the adoption of responsible gambling measures. They use clear procedures, which are meant to help players deal with problems such as addiction and problem gambling. Some of these policies have essential elements, such as self-exclusion options that enable one to temporarily stop or permanently close their account and deposit limits for managing the budget.

They also include links to trusted sites that offer guidance on safe gambling. There is a need for caution in using platforms that do not have such functions or do not promote responsible gaming. They may expose their users to uncalled-for dangers since they might not necessarily have their interests at heart. Users must choose platforms with strict policies for responsible gambling to ensure a safe and supportive environment.

Responsible gambling is important if one wants to play one’s favorite games or bet correctly on online sites that are legal and recognized as fair. Avoid sites that give you suspicions and report such scams immediately to the appropriate departments. This is important for your security and other players as it helps you avoid fraud in betting and other games. Remember, utilize websites that give the best value for your money and can protect your information, including the running bets and betting history. Be true to yourself, and when you need help, consider seeking some.

Lime Garden Share New Single ‘I Want to Be You’

0

Lime Garden have released ‘I Want to Be You’, the latest single from their upcoming debut album One More Thing – out 16 February. It follows previous entries ‘Love Song’ and ‘Nepotism (baby)’. Check it out below.

“‘I Want To Be You’ was inspired by a very specific memory I have as a 14 year old at my first gig looking at the band playing and thinking, ‘do I Want to be you or be with you, or do I want both?'” the band’s Chloe Howard said in a statement. “This feeling has continued to raise its head on many occasions in my life, and it’s become quite an obsessive process at times. Growing up with social media and the constant ability to follow your idols, with access into ‘their world’, has fuelled this in an unhealthy way.”

“I’m the type of person who can get very deep into something, but now I try to channel that into something more constructive and real, like music and art,” she added. “Recording this song was an attempt to emulate the feeling of true obsession through sound.”

Shygirl Releases New Single ‘thicc’

Shygirl is back with a new single called ‘thicc’. A collaboration with Cosha, the club track was produced by Karma Kid and Sega Bodega and marks Shygirl’s first new music since the release of the deluxe edition of Nymph. Check it out below.

“[This was] originally a song we’d made around the same time as some of the album tracks but I decided to hold this one back,” Shygirl said in a statement. “I’ve enjoyed teasing this one at festivals and shows while still in demo mode for over a year already with the idea of somehow infusing the energy of the crowd into this final version of the song – ‘thicc’ is fun and carefree and definitely a tease – all the classic traits of club shy infused into one track.”

Smooth Sailing: 12 Things Your Maritime Lawyer in Houston Wants You to Know Before Embarking on a Cruise

Ahoy there, adventure-seeker! If you’re all set to set sail on a cruise and let the sea breeze tousle your hair, there are a few nautical nuggets your friendly maritime lawyer in Houston wants to share with you. So, gather ’round as we spill the beans on 12 things you should know before casting off!

1. Your Ticket is a Legal Document

Alright, let’s talk about that little piece of paper you might think is just a pass to pina coladas and sunsets. Surprise! It’s more like a legal pact between you and the cruise line. In simple terms, it means there are terms and conditions hiding in the fine print.

So, before you’re all “anchors aweigh,” take a moment to skim through it. You wouldn’t start a game without knowing the rules, right? Same principle here – know what you’re signing up for to dodge any unexpected waves.

2. The Sea Has Rules Too

Picture the ocean as a massive game board, and just like any game, there are cruise ship rules. International maritime laws are the referee, ensuring everyone plays fair. Your cruise? Yep, it’s in the rulebook too. Now, you might not have this rulebook on your coffee table, but guess who does? Your maritime lawyer. If something smells fishy – and not just because of the seafood buffet – don’t hesitate to shoot them a message. They’re the experts in making sure everyone follows the playbook, no matter how deep the water gets.Top of Form

3. Don’t Slip Up: Watch Your Step

Imagine your cruise ship as a bustling city at sea – it’s got everything, from restaurants to theaters. Now, just like in any city, accidents can happen. Slip-ups, trips, and falls are like the city’s version of a pothole – common and a bit of a nuisance.

So, as you wander around, especially near the pool or on those shiny deck floors, be a bit like a cat on a hot tin roof – cautious. Your lawyer’s dream scenario? You relishing the ocean view, not nursing unexpected bruises in the ship’s infirmary.

4. Medical Matters Matter

Speaking of infirmaries, yeah, cruise ships have them, like floating clinics on the high seas. Now, if you’re feeling less than shipshape, don’t play the tough sailor card. Report it pronto. Why? Well, it’s not just about your health (though that’s pretty important); it’s also a smart move legally. If things take a legal U-turn later on, having the details of your health hiccup documented can be a lifesaver. So, be your own health advocate – your lawyer would give you a high five for that.

5. Cabin Fever is real

Alright, let’s talk about a very real phenomenon: cabin fever. Picture this – you’re on a ship, surrounded by water for miles. Close quarters, vast oceans, and a few too many people sharing the same space can sometimes lead to frayed nerves. It’s like being stuck in a really fancy elevator but for days on end. To keep the peace, channel your inner zen master.

Respect your shipmates’ personal space, resist the urge to turn into a sea detective investigating missing snacks, and if there’s an issue, don’t let it fester like last week’s mystery casserole. Involve the ship’s crew – they’re the unsung heroes in the peacekeeping department. Your maritime lawyer will give you a virtual high-five for trying to sort things out amicably before diving into the legal deep waters.

6. Be a Savvy Sailor: Know the Evacuation Plan

Picture this: the sun is shining, the sea is calm, and all is well. But, and it’s a big but, in the unlikely event of an emergency, you need to know your way around the ship’s evacuation plan. Think of it like the ultimate fire drill but on water.

Familiarize yourself with the exits, locate the lifeboats, and make sure you’re not left scratching your head if the Captain suddenly yells, “Abandon Ship!” It’s not about being a pessimist; it’s about being prepared. So, be a savvy sailor – your maritime lawyer would nod approvingly. Safety first, always.

7. Cruise Insurance: It’s a Thing

Consider cruise insurance. It might seem like an extra cost, but it can save you from financial stress if your dream vacation turns into a legal headache. Your maritime lawyer would likely give you a nod of approval on this one.

8. Shore Excursions Aren’t Risk-Free

Alright, land explorers, listen up! Venturing off the ship for onshore adventures is like opening a new chapter in your cruise saga. However, your lawyer is giving you the scoop: it’s not all rainbows and sunshine on land.

Accidents can happen, just like anywhere else. So, when you’re out there exploring the local wonders, channel your inner Indiana Jones, but also, keep your wits about you. Follow local laws, be cautious of your surroundings, and if, heaven forbid, you find yourself injured during an excursion, don’t play the silent hero. Report it promptly. Your lawyer isn’t trying to rain on your parade; they just want you to enjoy the shore without any legal storms on the horizon.

9. Watch What You Eat and Drink

Ah, the cruise buffet – a feast fit for a king! But hold your horses (or should I say, hold your forks) because your lawyer is throwing a friendly caution your way. Food poisoning is like the uninvited guest no one wants at the party.

Pay attention to what’s going on your plate, and if something seems off – maybe that shrimp cocktail is doing the cha-cha – don’t keep it to yourself. Notify the ship’s crew. Your stomach will thank you for averting disaster, and your lawyer will appreciate you steering clear of any legal indigestion. So, eat, drink, and be merry, but with a side of caution.

10. Document, Document, Document

If something does go awry, document everything. Take photos, jot down details, and keep records of any communication with the ship’s staff. It can make all the difference if you need to involve your maritime lawyer later.

11. Shore Leave Shenanigans

When you finally step onto solid ground, it’s like the world becomes your oyster. It’s tempting to let loose, soak in the local culture, and maybe push the boundaries a bit. But here’s the reality check: local laws still apply, even if you’re on vacation mode.

Your lawyer isn’t trying to be the fun police, but they really, really don’t want to play the role of an international legal detective trying to bail you out of a foreign jail. So, enjoy the shore, have a blast, but keep those shenanigans in check. Your future self will thank you for avoiding any unexpected legal plot twists.

12. Know Your Rights

In the unfortunate event that things go south and you find yourself in need of legal assistance, it’s time to channel your inner legal eagle. Know your rights like you know your way around the ship’s buffet. Your maritime lawyer isn’t just an emergency contact; they’re your ally in the legal seas.

If you ever feel like your rights are getting a bit waterlogged, don’t hesitate to reach out to Zehl & Associates Injury & Accident Lawyers. They have dedicated maritime lawyers who will navigate the storm with you.

Conclusion

So there you have it, a dozen nuggets of wisdom to keep in mind as you embark on your maritime adventure. Bon voyage, and may your cruise be smooth sailing all the way!

Wishy Share New Song ‘Too True’

0

Wishy – the group led by Indiana songwriters Kevin Krauter and Nina Pitchkites – have dropped a new track, ‘Too True’. Following their debut single ‘Donut’, it’s set to appear on their upcoming EP Paradise, which is out December 15. Check it out below.

“This song is about how my relationship with someone that I grew up idolizing had naturally shifted over the years,” Krauter said of ‘Too True’ in a statement. “Part of it is a grieving lament at what was lost in that process; how growing into oneself can catalyze that shift, how people can tend to grow apart without realizing or trying, and how to forgive yourself and others for that natural process.”

Friko Announce Debut Album, Share Video for New Single ‘Crashing Through’

0

Friko – the Chicago band made up of vocalist/guitarist Niko Kapetan and drummer Bailey Minzenberger – have announced their debut full-length, Where we’ve been, Where we go from here. It’s out February 16 on ATO Records. Today, they’ve shared its lead single, ‘Crashing Through’, along with a video directed by Alec Basse. Check it out below.

According to Kapetan, ‘Crashing Through’ is about “wanting better for yourself and the people around you, but wondering how you can possibly do that with the world we live in.”

Where we’ve been, Where we go from here was co-produced by Scott Tallarida and Jack Henry, and mastered by Heba Kadry. “One of the main things we want to do as a band is talk about what’s happening right now and everything we’re feeling, with an honesty and directness that gets through to people,” Kapetan said. “I hope that our music helps everyone feel more deeply, but in a way that goes beyond just reacting to the songs. I want it to pick people up, so that they can actually go out and do something with whatever they’re feeling.”

J Mascis Announces New Album ‘What Do We Do Now’, Shares New Single

J Mascis has announced a new solo album called What Do We Do Now. It’s set to land on February 2 via Sub Pop. Lead single ‘Can’t Believe We’re Here’ arrives today alongside a video edited by Adam Bale at Ballad Pictures. Check it out below.

What Do We Do Now was recorded at Mascis’ Bisquiteen studio in Western Massachusetts. The Dinosaur Jr. member recruited Ken Maiuri (of the B-52’s) to play keys and Matthew “Doc” Dunn to perform steel guitar on the record, which follows 2018’s Elastic Days.

“When I’m writing for the band, I’m always trying to think of doing things Lou and Murph would fit into,” Mascis said in a statement. “For myself, I’m thinking more about what I can do with just an acoustic guitar, even for the leads. Of course, this time, I added full drums and electric leads, although the rhythm parts are still all acoustic. Usually, I try to do the solo stuff more simply so I can play it by myself, but I really wanted to add the drums. Once that started, everything else just fell into place. So it ended up sounding a lot more like a band record. I dunno why I did that exactly, but it’s just what happened.”

Of collaborating with Maiuri, he added: “Ken is great, and he plays all the keys. I tried playing some keyboards on the first Fog album, but I’m really only comfortable playing the white notes, so it’s kind of limiting. [laughs] Nowadays, I could just turn the pitch on a mini Mellotron to play different sounds, but black keys just seem hard. For whatever reason, I just like banging on the white ones. Seems like it’s harder to figure out how to stretch your fingers around the other ones.”
