What Is The One About Matthew Perry About?
Told in three parts, The One About Matthew Perry looks beyond the iconic character of Chandler Bing to explore the complicated life of the beloved actor who portrayed him.
The docuseries reconstructs Perry’s journey from aspiring young performer to one of television’s most recognisable comedy stars. It features interviews with Perry’s younger sister, as well as lifelong friends, former partners, and professional collaborators. While his Friends castmates were not interviewed, photographs and videos from the Perry family’s archive add an intimate dimension to the narrative.
Viewers can expect the first episode to follow Perry’s early years and breakthrough role on Friends. The second explores how his growing fame coincided with a difficult battle with addiction. The final installment examines his hopes of getting better and the tragic circumstances that led to his death in 2023.
Mary Robertson directed the series. She set out to make a film “for those who love Matthew — which, by the way, is kind of everyone — to love him more.”
“This doesn’t mean only focusing on the moments when they were perfect or joyful. It means honoring the struggle and the joy, the lightness and the darkness,” she told Tudum.
Though The One About Matthew Perry season 2 is unlikely, the docuseries gives the late actor’s loved ones a chance to remember him and honour his legacy. If you were a fan, we can almost guarantee you’ll find it moving.
