A new South African series is climbing the Netflix charts. Umthetho, an adaptation of Brazilian show Brotherhood (Irmandade), is now the third most-watched non-English show on the platform.
With 3.5 million views, it’s also the #1 show in 10 countries. Does this mean that a follow-up is on the way? Here’s what we know so far.
Umthetho Season 2 Release Date
At the time of writing, no official news is available about a potential Umthetho season 2. That said, there’s still time for a renewal announcement.
The title isn’t listed as a limited series on Netflix, and viewership numbers are good. Plus, the first season leaves a lot of story threads open. Brotherhood consisted of two seasons, so Umthetho might follow the same route.
If all goes well, new episodes could arrive in late 2027 or 2028.
Umthetho Cast

What Is Umthetho About?
A crime thriller, Umthetho centres on Mbali, an idealistic prosecutor. Her world unravels when she finds out that her older brother Moses, whom she has believed to be dead for years, is actually alive. On top of that, he’s running a criminal syndicate from behind bars.
When Mbali’s younger brother gets into trouble, she agrees to become an informant and infiltrate Moses’ organisation to keep her brothers alive. While Moses is fighting for control inside the prison, where he has to deal with corrupt authorities, Mbali’s attempts to manipulate both sides put her and her family in danger. The deeper she gets, the harder it becomes to separate her professional obligations from her family loyalties.
By the time the first season wraps up, Mbali is on the run, an image that’s far removed from the ethical prosecutor we meet in the beginning. Umthetho season 2, if it happens, will likely pick up from there. How far will Mbali go to protect her loved ones? We hope we’ll get a chance to find out.
