Sun Kil Moon’s Mark Kozelek Accused of Sexual Misconduct by Three Women

0

WARNING: This article contains descriptions of sexual assault some readers might find upsetting.

Mark Kozelek, the musician behind Sun Kil Moon and Red House Painters, has been accused of sexual misconduct by three women. These allegations, reported by Pitchfork in a new investigative piece, include nonconsensual sexual encounters and exposing himself.

One of Kozelek’s accusers is Sarah Catherine Golden, a Los Angeles mental health specialist, who first met Kozelek on a flight to Portugal in November of 2017 and saw him perform that night. After talking for some time backstage, they went to Kozelek’s hotel room, where she claims he asked her to stay the night after offering to get her a cab back to her Airbnb. Pitchfork reports that Golden went to smoke on the balcony while he took a call in his room, and when he joined her outside, he was wearing just a T-shirt and underwear. After she told him she wasn’t interested, “his whole demeanor just changed”, Golden says.

She claims that Kozelek pushed the beds together and laid down on top of her. “At that point, I was kind of in shock,” Pitchfork reports her saying. “I told him I really needed to get a cab, if he could please just call for it.” After calling her a cab, she claims he started masturbating in front of her, as well as grabbing at her body and trying to kiss her. She also alleges that Kozelek forced him to touch his penis.

Though Golden didn’t report the incident to the police, she did text two friends about it the same day, both of whom confirmed her account to Pitchfork. Later, Kozelek wrote a song about the encounter called ‘Soap For Joyful Hands’, which appeared on his 2018 album This Is My Dinner. In the song, however, Kozelek never mentions anything sexual, claiming that they went their separate ways after having a conversation. “I feel like he totally flipped the script on that whole thing to make it seem like this woman is just some kind of groupie type who was pestering him, because she wants to get into the brain of this genius,” Golden says.

Pitchfork also reports allegations from woman identified under the pseudonym Andrea, who says she met Kozelek in September of 2014 at the Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina – right around the time his Sun Kil Moon album Benji was garnering widespread critical acclaim. At the time, Kozelek was 47 years old, while Andrea was 19. She claims Kozelek gave her his number after a show and invited her to his hotel room after 1 a.m. Afterwards, Kozelek allegedly took a bath with the bathroom door open, then dropped his towel and “pretty much pounced on” her. “I didn’t have the courage to be like, No, that wasn’t okay, and that’s not what I wanted to do,” she said, adding that she texted a friend the next day saying that it “wasn’t really consensual.”

Andrew reportedly continued a long-distance relationship with Kozelek for the next three months, alleging that though some sexual acts were consensual, he often pressured her into others where “the lines [were] really blurred,” including instances of public sex with which she was uncomfortable. “I feel like our sexual relationship, every encounter was him trying to find another thing he could do, and not in a way where he asks for consent or permission,” Andrea said.

A third woman, a female musician who declined to be named, also alleged that Kozelek invited her and another female musician to his hotel room after a show in 2014 and “acted inappropriately,” according to Pitchfork.

Kozelek has showcased controversial and often misogynistic behaviour in the past, particularly towards female journalists. In 2015, he referred to someone as a “spoiled bitch rich kid blogger brat” in his song ‘War on Drugs: Suck My Cock’; Allison Hussey, now a writer for Pitchfork, read the song as referring to herself following a negative review of his performance at Hopscotch 2014. That same year, he called Laura Snapes, now deputy music editor for the Guardian, a “bitch” journalist who “totally wants to fuck me” while onstage.

PC Music’s A.G. Cook has come through with his debut solo album, 7G. Released two days ago, the 49-track (!) LP is spread across seven discs, each divided into a different instrument: “Drums”, “Guitar”, “Supersaw”, “Piano”, “Nord”, “Spoken Word”, and “Extreme Vocals”. In addition to a number of original compositions, the album also includes covers of Blur, Taylor Swift, Charli XCX, The Strokes, The Smashing Pumpkins, Tommy James and the Shondells, Life Sim, and Sia. Clocking in at over two-and-a-half hours, it features vocal contributions from Chairlift singer Caroline Polachek, Tommy Cash, Hannah Diamond, and Alaska Reid.

Burna Boy, Twice as Tall

Burna Boy has dropped his fifth studio album Twice as Tall via Atlantic Records. The follow-up to 2019’s African Giant was executive produced by Diddy, Bosede Ogulu, and Burna Boy and features guest appearances from Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Stormzy, Youssou N’Dour, Naughty by Nature, Mike Dean, Timbaland, and more. Containing 14 tracks, the album was recorded mostly in Lagos, Nigeria during the COVID-19 pandemic and features contributions from Nigerian producers LeriQ, Telz, P2J and Rexxie as well as established names such as Mike Dean, Timbaland, Skread and Jae5.

Biffy Clyro, A Celebration Of Endings

Biffy Clyro are back with their ninth studio album, A Celebration of Endings, via 14th Floor/ Warner. Produced by Rich Costey (Sigur Rós, Muse, Frank Turner), the follow-up to 2016’s Ellipsis  and their 2019 soundtrack album Balance, Not Symmetry was originally scheduled for release back in May but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Speaking about the album, frontman Simon Neil told NME: “I’m normally very personal with what I write, but in this day and age it’s impossible to not be affected by these things that are constantly happening and infiltrating every aspect of all of our lives.” He added: “I always remember saying, ‘I’m never going to write songs about society’ or whatever, but it’s just impossible not to. The songs felt like they were the ones that spoke to me the most.”

Young Jesus, Welcome to Conceptual Beach

Young Jesus have returned with a new album titled Welcome to Conceptual Beach via Saddle Creek. The 7-track LP, which follows 2018’s The Whole Thing Is Just There, was first conceived as a physical zine in 2016, while the four members of the Los Angeles-based indie rock outfit were on tour. It imagines “a long-time mental refuge, where [vocalist/guitarist John Rossiter] imagines himself living—like a medieval, stigmata-wrought hermit—all his needs for okay-ness finally met,” according to a press release. “The reason it’s called Welcome to… [Conceptual Beach] is because I’m inviting other inner landscapes into it,” Rossiter further explains.

Other albums out today:

Whitney, Candid; Bruce Hornsby, Non-Secure Connection; Kathleen Edwards, Total Freedom; Boldy James, The Versace Tape.

Brian Eno has soundtracked a new Extinction Rebellion short film titled Extinction Emergency, and Why We Must Act Now. The video is narrated by Naomie Harris, star of 2016’s Moonlight as well as several Bond films, directed by Miritte Ben Yitzchak, and written by Mark Ellis. Check it out below.

“I’m proud to be able to lend my voice to this project, which I hope will inspire viewers to get behind the ambitions of Extinction Rebellion with a great deal of urgency,” Harris said in a statement. The video is the latest in a series of videos delving into “the most pressing issues facing us in this vital decade for the survival of all life.”

Eno was among the many artists who supported Extinction Rebellion by signing an open letter in December of last year addressing “climate hypocrisy”. Last month, he and his brother Roger Eno unveiled the deluxe edition of their collaborative LP Mixing Colours. Their follow-up EP Luminous is out tomorrow (August 14).

EA Releases FIFA 21 Career Mode Trailer with Bundles of New Features

0

EA has finally released the long-awaited trailer for FIFA 21 Career Mode. Here is a short take on what the trailer has presented us with.

Interactive Match Sim / Jump In Mode

This well-known feature is not exactly new but has been requested by thousands of career mode fans. Luckily for FIFA gamers, it has been re-added with some improvements. Firstly, we have the main feature of this mode, which lets you jump in during a game whilst it’s being simulated. This means you won’t need to only sim the full game or play it, but you’ll be able to join in at any point during a match. This is great if you only want to spend time playing the second half, or simply want to get through the career mode quicker by playing the last ten minutes of the match.

During this mode, you will also be able to make tactical changes and track the progress of each player, bringing in more realism and positive progression to the game.

Player Development

This new feature will not just allow you to improve the attributes of the player, but turn your players from one position to another. It’s a great way to create a more dynamic squad without having to spend a lot of money in the transfer market.

Active Training

Moreover, we have been presented with an active training a feature which allows you to schedule your team’s training. Unlike the previous FIFA’s, you’ll be able to manage more players during these sessions, meaning once again a more realistic progression has been added to the career mode. This feature allows you also to choose rest days.

Match Sharpness

Match sharpness is another superb feature by FIFA 21. This stat will show the manager if a player is going to play at the best of his abilities or not, making another great way to select your squad for matchday.

New Transfer Options

Career Mode will now provide players with more transfer options, meaning you’ll be able to be more creative when it comes to making deals for wanted players during the transfer market. This has been implemented in previous FIFA games but by the looks of it, has been enhanced for more realism.

Sufjan Stevens Shares Video for New Song ‘Video Game’

0

Sufjan Stevens has released a new single from his upcoming album, The Ascension. Titled ‘Video Game’, it comes with an accompanying video directed by Nicole Ginelli and choreographed by Jalaiah Harmon. Check it out below.

“It’s unfortunate that we live in a society where the value of people is quantified by likes, followers, listeners and views,” Stevens said in statement about the track. “So many people are seeking attention for the wrong reasons. I think we should all be doing our best work without looking for accolades or seeking reward.”

He continued: “The main takeaway of ‘Video Game’ for me is: your worth (invaluable) should never be based on other people’s approval (ephemeral). Just be yourself. Keep it real. Keep it moving. Do all things with absolute purity, love and joy. And always do your best. Jalaiah epitomizes all of this and I’m truly inspired by her. So I thought, ‘what if we could get Jalaiah to star in a “dance video” about not wanting to star in a “dance video?”’  I’m so honored she agreed. She clearly owns it, and her work here is beautiful, poignant and true.”

For Harmon, this was the first time she was asked to do the choreography for a whole song. “I was a little nervous in the beginning, but once I really broke the song into parts and listened to the lyrics over and over, I just put moves together that connected to the words and felt natural for me to do,” she said. “I think I’m still really trying to get used to this kind of success, so I can’t really define it just yet. I just know that when you work hard and you treat others with kindness and fairness, good things come back to you.”

The Ascension comes out September 25 via Asthmatic Kitty. It includes the previously released, sprawling 12-minute single ‘America’, which was then accompanied by the non-album B-side ‘My Rajneesh’. Stevens recently joined Mina Tindle for her song ‘Give a Little Love’.

Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon Joins the Japanese House on New Song ‘Dionne’

The Japanese House, the project of 25-year-old singer-songwriter Amber Bain, has released her new EP Chewing Cotton Wool via Dirty Hit. The 4-track EP includes a track featuring Bon Iver‘s Justin Vernon called ‘Dionne’. Listen to it below.

The song’s title is in reference to legendary singer Dionne Warwick. “I’ve been thinking about my storyline / And how your past becomes your present if it’s always on your mind,” Bain sings, “We play Dionne Warwick “Walk On By” / And Freddy put his heads between his legs and cried.”

Baine’s debut EP, Pools to Bathe In, which was released under an anonymous identity in 2015, was actually recorded at Bon Iver’s cabin. She later became known for her 2017 hit ‘Saw You In A Dream’ and the 2019 track ‘Maybe You’re The Reason’, which appears on the new EP. She released her debut album, Good at Falling, last year.

Bon Iver recently unveiled a new single titled ‘AUATC’, which featured contributions from Bruce Springsteen, Jenny Lewis, and more. Justin Vernon also collaborated with Taylor Swift on ‘exile’, from her new album folklore
