Lost Girls (Jenny Hval and Håvard Volden) Return With New Single ‘Ruins’

Lost Girls – the collaborative project of Jenny Hval and Håvard Volden – have returned with a new song, ‘Ruins’. It comes alongside the announcement of an autumn tour, including a show in New York City and a wave of UK and European dates. Check it out below.

“Håvard sent me this long, wonderful and kaleidoscopic bass line on top of a drum machine track that I had no clue what to do with — it felt too difficult to try to learn or tame it,” Hval explained in a statement about the new single. “I started improvising with it and moving parts around a bit, and the song began to feel like getting lost in a city at night, or a cemetery, walking around in circles, perhaps running, perhaps hiding. After improvising for a bit I realized that I was singing about this kind of pattern of movement, but as a band practice in the 90s, back when I first started playing with other people. If ‘Ruins’ is ‘about’ anything, it’s about a practice of discovery, being young and lost and feeling as if you are close to something ancient and magical.”

Lost Girls released their debut album, Menneskekollektivet, in 2021.

Explosions in the Sky Announce New Album ‘End’, Share New Single

Explosions in the Sky have announced their first studio album in seven years. The follow-up to 2016’s The Wilderness is called End, and it arrives September 15 via Temporary Residence. They’ve also shared the opening track, ‘Ten Billion People’. Check it out and find the album cover, tracklist, and the band’s upcoming tour dates below.

Despite the album’s title, a press release assures that End will not be Explosions in the Sky’s last LP. It follows their soundtrack for the PBS documentary Big Bend: The Wild Frontier of Texas, which came out in 2021.

“Our starting point was the concept of an ending – death, or the end of a friendship or relationship,” the band said in a statement. “Every song comes from a story, or an idea one of us has had that we’ve all expanded on and made its own world. Maybe it’s our nature, but we kept feeling that the album title was ultimately open to a lot more interpretation – the end of a thing or a time can mean a stop, but it can also mean a beginning, and what happens after one thing ends might pale in comparison to what it becomes next.”

Strange Ranger Share Video for New Song ‘Wide Awake’

Strange Ranger have shared ‘Wide Awake’, a new offering from their upcoming LP Pure Music ahead of its release on Friday, July 21 via Fire Talk. Taylor swift has set a new record for the most No. 1 albums for any female artist in history, surpassing previous record holder Barbra Streisand. The re-recorded version of Speak Now has earned Swift her 12th No. 1 LP, debuting with 716,000 equivalent album units in the US in the week ending July 13. It’s the biggest week for any album since Swift’s last record, Midnights.

Swift has also become the first woman in history to have four albums chart in the Billboard Top 10 at the same time, Billboard notes. The only other artist to have at least four titles in the Top 10 concurrently is Prince, who had five albums reach the Top 10 the week following his death in 2016. Swift is now tied with Drake for most No. 1 albums; only the Beatles (19) and Jay-Z (14) have more.

Jane Birkin Dead at 76

Jane Birkin has died at the age of 76. The iconic actress, singer, and model was found dead at her home in Paris, French news outlet Le Parisien reports. A cause of death has not yet been disclosed. She had previously been diagnosed with leukemia in 2002 and suffered a stroke in 2021.

Born in London in 1946 to Judy Campbell and David Birkin, Birkin started acting as a teenager and became a staple of the Swinging London scene in the 1960s. She picked up a few minor acting parts before landing roles in films like Michelangelo Antonioni’s Blowup, Kaleidoscope, and Wonderwall. In 1965, she married James Bond composer John Barry and had her first daughter, Kate, who died in 2013 at age 46. Barry and Birkin divorced in 1968.

Birkin met French actor and singer-songwriter Serge Gainsbourg on the set of the 1968 film Slogan, and the pair’s erotically charged 1969 single ‘Je t’aime moi non plus’ became a Number One single in the UK, the first foreign language song to top the charts in the country. Their relationship lasted for more than a decade, and in 1971 they had a daughter, French singer and actress Charlotte Gainsbourg. Birkin was also the mother of French singer and actress Lou Doillon through her 13-year relationship with French director Jacques Doillon.

Throughout her acting career, Birkin worked with directors such as Jean-Luc Godard, Agnes Varda, Jacques Rivette, Roger Vadim, and Alain Resnais. She also appeared in two Agatha Christie adaptations, 1978’s Death on the Nile and 1982’s Evil Under the Sun. She continued releasing her music well into the 2000s, her most recent LP being 2020’s Oh! Pardon, tu dormais…. Birkin was also the namesake of the Birkin bag, which was created in 1980s by French luxury design house Hermès after a chance encounter between the singer and company executive Jean-Louis Dumas.

Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, wrote in a statement following Birkin’s passing: “Because she embodied freedom, because she sang the most beautiful words of our language, Jane Birkin was a French icon. A complete artist, her voice was as sweet as her engagements were fiery. She bequeaths us tunes and images that will never leave us.”
