Cindy Sherman to Present a New Body of Work at Hauser & Wirth

New York based artist Cindy Sherman will be showcasing her new body of work at the at Hauser & Wirth’s Wooster Street location in New York City from the 18th of January, 2024.

Sherman’s exhibition features approximately 30 new works. It marks her return to the SoHo district, where she premiered the now iconic Untitled Film Stills at Artists Space in the late 1970s, launching a career that has made her one of today’s most well-known and influential artists. Throughout her career, Sherman has constructed personae using digital manipulation, meditating on the increasingly fractured sense of self in 21st-century society and encapsulating her art in a way that is uniquely hers.

As part of these latest works, Sherman has collaged various elements of her face to compose entirely new characters, using digital manipulation to emphasize layered details and underscore the malleability of the self. To focus simply on the details of the face and head, she has removed all external context, omitting any mise-en-scene.

In this article, we will discuss mushrooms, a type of fungus. Mushrooms are very popular in America; people eat around 3 pounds yearly. Mushrooms do not contain many calories, so they are suitable for health. The article lists ten health benefits of mushrooms. What are mushrooms?

Mushrooms, belonging to the Fungi kingdom, are unique organisms distinct from plants and animals. They lack chlorophyll and derive nutrition from decomposing organic matter, showcasing over 10,000 species. Despite being a type of fungus, mushrooms remain a popular addition to American diets.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics reveal that each American consumes about three pounds of mushrooms annually. The appeal of mushrooms goes beyond their taste; they offer significant health advantages.

10 Health Benefits of Eating Mushrooms

Cancer Risk Reduction

Mushrooms offer compelling benefits in reducing the risk of cancer. Packed with powerful microchemicals, they are natural defenders against abnormal cell growth. Rich in antioxidants, mushrooms form a robust armor, shielding cells from oxidative stress—the precursor to cancer.

Additionally, these fungi enhance immune function, providing an extra layer of protection. With anti-inflammatory properties, mushrooms combat chronic inflammation, a known catalyst for cancer.

Their ability to target abnormal cell growth and support metabolism further cement mushrooms as a formidable ally in the ongoing battle against cancer, making them an invaluable addition to a cancer-preventive diet.

Lower Sodium Intake

Mushrooms offer a unique solution for reducing sodium intake, which is essential for heart health and blood pressure management. Their natural low sodium content and rich umami flavor made them ideal for enhancing dishes without adding salt.

This characteristic is particularly beneficial for those with hypertension or anyone aiming to decrease their sodium consumption. The savory taste of mushrooms allows them to be a versatile ingredient in various recipes, replacing or reducing the need for salt. This adaptability helps individuals effortlessly incorporate a low-sodium diet into their daily meals without sacrificing flavor.

Due to their umami flavor, mushrooms enhance the taste of food naturally, allowing for less reliance on salt without compromising on flavor.

Cholesterol Management

Mushrooms are increasingly recognized as a heart-friendly food, offering multiple benefits for cardiovascular health. Notably low in calories and completely fat-free, they are an excellent dietary choice for those looking to maintain or improve heart health. Regular consumption of mushrooms contributes significantly to better overall heart health.

Emerging research also hints at their positive impact on mental health, possibly aiding conditions like anxiety and depression.

Provide a Source of Vitamin D

Mushrooms, unique non-animal sources of vitamin D, stand as crucial allies for bone health and immune function, especially beneficial for vegetarians and vegans. Exposure to sunlight activates vitamin D production in mushrooms, offering a plant-based solution. Learn how to prepare these nutritious fungi for a wholesome culinary experience.

Notably, varieties like Lion’s Mane contribute to cognitive well-being, containing compounds that stimulate brain cell growth and enhance cognitive function. This dual role makes mushrooms a flavorful addition to diets, addressing vitamin D needs and potentially slowing the progression of neurodegenerative diseases.

Embracing a diverse mushroom repertoire ensures a holistic approach to health, intertwining bone strength, immune support, and cognitive vitality. Incorporating these fungi into our meals becomes a delightful and nutritious strategy for overall well-being.

Lower Blood Pressure

Mushrooms emerge as a dual powerhouse for cardiovascular health. Packed with potassium, these fungi act as effective vasodilators, promoting blood vessel relaxation and mitigating the risk of hypertension and cardiovascular diseases.

Notably, their low sodium content contributes to a balanced electrolyte profile, further aiding blood pressure regulation. Regular inclusion of potassium-rich foods, such as mushrooms, in the diet becomes a strategic approach to maintaining heart health.

By fostering a harmonious balance between potassium and sodium, mushrooms offer a flavorful and nutritious solution to support overall cardiovascular well-being. This natural synergy underscores the importance of incorporating diverse and nutrient-rich foods into our diets, emphasizing the holistic impact on heart health and the broader spectrum of our well-being.

Immune System Boost

Mushrooms are like superheroes for our bodies because they have unique things called beta-glucans and polysaccharides that strengthen our immune system. These superhero compounds help our body fight germs and sickness, keeping us healthy.

The beta-glucans in mushrooms are like commanders that tell our immune cells, such as natural killer cells and macrophages, to be active and ready to protect us. This makes our body better at fighting infections and staying strong.

So, eating mushrooms often can boost our immune system and help our body stay tough against different illnesses. Adding mushrooms to our meals makes them tasty and helps us stay healthy and strong.

The natural synergy between the potassium content in mushrooms and its diverse benefits emphasizes their significance as a nutrient-dense and tasty option for those seeking to enhance their overall physical health. Choosing mushrooms as part of a well-rounded diet becomes a simple yet impactful strategy for supporting various essential bodily functions.

Runnner Announces New Ambient Album ‘Starsdust’, Shares New Songs

0

Runnner has announced an ambient album titled Starsdust, arriving February 2 on Run for Cover. Following 2023’s Like Dying Stars, We’re Reaching Out, the record spans twelve songs, including the just-unveiled ‘ten’ and ‘eleven’. Take a listen below.

“I made one rule for myself while making this record and it was that I wasn’t allowed to record any new audio,” Noah Weinman explained in a press release. “Every sound on this album is a repurposed stem from Like Dying Stars, We’re Reaching Out. I was allowed to pitch, flip, stretch, and chop anything I wanted, but everything had to begin from something already recorded for the last album.” Weinman continued:

I made the rest of the album during the spring of 2023 when I was mostly stuck in bed recovering from tearing my achilles tendon and the subsequent surgery. A project that seemed to perfectly fit my constraints.

The initial process of making these songs was an attempt to remove myself from the process a bit. I’d (sort of) randomly choose stems from songs, like the bass from one track, the drums from another, and maybe find a banjo or piano loop from a third, and then throw them together. It usually made something chaotic at first, but the joy of the album was sifting through that initial cacophony and finding the kernel of the song to keep pursuing. Many attempts were abandoned, but the twelve featured here I consider to be my most fruitful endeavors.

It was very exciting, scary, and rewarding to step outside of my wheelhouse on this record and I hope you ennnjoy it.

I’d like to thank Matt Emonson for helping me put the final touches on this record. Max Mueller for his insights along the way. Ethan, Tom, Andrew, and Jeff for their support and encouragement throughout the murky process. And all of the players on Like Dying Stars, We’re Reaching Out (Sam, Evan, Jordan, Ben M, Ben W, Madi) for providing me with such engaging performances.

Aoife O’Donovan Announces New Album ‘All My Friends’, Shares New Single

0

Aoife O’Donovan has announced a new album called All My Friends. It’s slated for release on March 22 via Yep Roc. The title track, which features the Westerlies, the Knights, and San Francisco Girls Chorus, is out now. Check it out below.

“The seeds of this song predate the entire project as a whole,” O’Donovan said of ‘All My Friends’ in a statement. “This song is about camaraderie, companionship, people united in common struggle against oppression. I imagine the women literally marching in Tennessee as the dawn lifted over the fields. I imagine the struggle of needing just one more state to ratify, and just how much weight that final vote held. I imagine the collective longing for the country of our birth to open her arms. The opening, featuring my voice in harmony with The Westerlies, sets the tone for the record. Slowly, the strings enter, enveloping the chorale in rich tones, and then when the band kicks in after that first verse, we hear the gorgeous aching sound of the San Francisco Girls Chorus.”

O’Donovan co-produced All My Friends, the follow-up to 2022’s Age of Apathy, with Eric Jacobsen and Darren Schneider. The LP was mixed by Schneider and mastered at Chicago Mastering by Bob Weston.

The Lemonheads have shared a cover of ‘Seven Out’, a song written by the Vaselines’ Eugene Kelly. Listen to it below.

“Mac from Superchunk made me a tape of The Vaselines and The Louvin Brothers when we stayed with him on our first real tour in 1987,” Evan Dando said in a statement. “Eugene’s band Captain America played their first show with us in Glasgow (with Brendan from Teenage Fanclub on drums) in 1990. We did a lot of touring with Eugenius in the early 90’s (no longer Captain America after Marvel Comics threatened to sue). I’ve always LOVED this song since it came out on a Eugene solo single. I’ve finally covered it!”

Along with last November’s ‘Fear of Living’, the track will appear on a special limited edition 7″ that will be exclusively available at Dando’s upcoming live shows.

Gouge Away Announce New Album ‘Deep Sage’, Release New Song

Gouge Away have announced their third LP, Deep Sage, which will drop on March 15 via Deathwish Inc. The follow-up to 2018’s Burnt Sugar is led by the single ‘Stuck in a Dream’, which comes with a video directed by Caleb Gowett. Check it out and find the album’s cover art and tracklist below.

Deep Sage will include the May 2023 single ‘Idealized’. Gouge Away began writing the LP in 2019 and didn’t finish until March 2023, when they started recording it with Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden East, completely analog and almost entirely live.

“Recording live and to tape creates an intense environment where we have no choice but to feed off each other’s energy,” the band’s Christina Michelle said in a statement. “We have to get it right in one take and if anyone messes up we all have to start over, so no one wants to be that guy. It adds an element of risk and excitement. We don’t want to sound beautifully polished or perfect anyway. We want to sound like the five of us being human, and no one is better than Jack Shirley when it comes to capturing what it feels like in the room.”
