Frank Kozik, Graphic Artist Behind Queens of the Stone Age and Melvins Album Covers, Dead at 61

Frank Kozik, the prolific artist who designed posters and album covers for bands including Queens of the Stone Age, Nirvana, the White Stripes, and Melvins, has died. According to a statement posted on his social media pages, Kozik passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 6. He was 61.

“Frank was a man larger than himself, an icon in each genre he worked in,” the statement reads. “He dramatically changed the industry he was a part of. He was a creative force of nature. We are so beyond lucky and honored to have been part of his journey, and he will be missed beyond what words could ever express. He loved his wife, his cats, classic muscle cars, mentoring others, and Disneyland. His forceful presence will be missed by all who knew him. His legacy, like all great masters, will live on through his art and our memories of him.”

Born in Spain and raised in Sacramento, Kozik was a self-trained artist who started designing flyters and posters for punk bands while living in Austin, Texas in the ’80s. After moving to San Francisco in 1993, he launched his label Man’s Ruin Records, which would release more than 200 records by bands such as Melvins, Kyuss, Nebula, and High on Fire.

Kozik designed many album covers, including Queens of the Stone Age’s self-titled album, Melvins’ Houdini, and the Offspring’s Americana. He also directed the music video for Soundgarden’s ‘Pretty Noose’ and worked with Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Butthole Surfers, and Helmet. Kozik folded his label in 2001 to focus on fine art and the designer toy movement, collaborating with Kidrobot, where he served as the chief creative officer, and other boutique toy companies.

MTV News Is Shutting Down

MTV News is shutting down after 36 years, Variety reports. The company has been shuttered as part of larger layoffs at parent company Paramount Global that saw 25% of employees across MTV Entertainment Studios, Paramount Media Networks, and Showtime laid off on Tuesday (May 9).

In a memo to staff, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks president Chris McCarthy wrote that despite “success in streaming, we continue to feel pressure from broader economic headwinds like many of our peers,” and that “senior leaders in coordination with HR have been working together over the past few months to determine the optimal organization for the current and future needs of our business.”

McCarthy added: “This is a tough yet important strategic realignment of our group. Through the elimination of some units and by streamlining others, we will be able to reduce costs and create a more effective approach to our business as we move forward. Today we will notify employees whose positions are being impacted with leaders communicating the news directly to those teams/or individuals. These meetings will be followed by individual 1:1s with our HR partners.”

MTV News launched in 1987 with one show, The Week in Rock, hosted by veteran journalist Kurt Loder. Correspondents like Loder, Tabitha Soren, SuChin Pak, Gideon Yago, Alison Stewart, and others reported for the outlet as it expanded into pop culture, politics, and other areas, bringing a youthful perspective that served as an alternative to established media. On April 8, 1994, Loder confirmed the death of Kurt Cobain, an event that led MTV News to break into regular programming.

In 2015, MTV News made a major investment in online coverage, with an added focus on longform journalism, but in 2017 many of its writers were laid off as the company began to emphasize more on video and short-form content.

This Is the Kit Unveil Video for New Song ‘More Change’

This Is the Kit have released a new single from their forthcoming record Careful Of Your Keepers. ‘More Change’, which follows lead cut ‘Inside Outside’, comes paired with an animated video created by Benjamin Jones. Watch and listen below.

Songwriter Kate Stables shared the following statement about ‘More Change’:

More it stays the same.
Sometimes it feels like everything has completely changed and then it just feels like it’s always
been like that. And always will be like that.
The more things change the more they actually stay the same.
The one constant is change.
Change is the only thing we can be sure of.
Who is who.
The people that become important to us and the way they become important. Phases that
come and go? Or don’t go?
The friends we need. We need our friends. We need to remember to be in the world.
I love it when Gruff says “light bulb.”
Realising that things come and go and pass and are born and then die.
The good it does us to hold hands with someone.
The tearing in two of a person and a heart.

Jones added of the accompanying visual: “With this video I wanted to create something that felt homemade, organic and very much alive. Using very simple puppetry with some old coat hangers and some basic stop motion (and some surprisingly willing neighbors who lent me their faces) I’ve tried to create a few characters and scenarios which are connected in some ways, but also reflect the themes I picked up from the music – sadness, compromise, exploring new ground, and finding new ways to help each other move forward.”

Careful Of Your Keepers is due out June 9 via Rough Trade Records.

Christine and the Queens Shares New Single ‘Tears can be so soft’

Christine and the Queens has unveiled ‘Tears can be so soft’, the latest single from his upcoming album PARANOÏA, ANGELS, TRUE LOVE – out June 9 via Because Music. It follows previous offerings ‘To be honest’ and ‘True love’, and you can check it out below.

“’Tears can be so soft’ was born out of the marriage of a Marvin Gaye sample that caught my attention, this intoxicating, elegant, almost poised in its melancholy string arrangement,” Chris explained in a statement, adding that song is meant to evoke “this deep sense of almost womb-like, hypnotic space where the voice could soar in its loneliness,” an “interplay between the suffering that motivates tears and the gentle healing effect they can have.”

Gumm Release New Song ‘Free’

Chattanooga, Tennessee band Gumm have shared a new song, ‘Free’, which will appear on their upcoming debut LP Slogan Machine. Check it out below.

“This song is more or less about recognizing the parts of my upbringing that were harmful,” vocalist Drew Waldon explained in a press release. “I’ve had to unlearn a lot of the things that I was indoctrinated with early in life, to the bewilderment of friends and family who still feel content living within the limits of those specific moral, artistic, spiritual boundaries. I broke free, and am still breaking free, from the ideas and beliefs that were thrust upon me at a young age and were used to keep me subservient for many years.”

Waldon continued: “I’m breaking free from certainty – the ‘only one truth’ mentality; I’m breaking free from systems and schools of thought that prey on people’s fears in order to keep them ignorant and controlled; I’m breaking free from any voice that tries to limit or belittle my creativity and personal growth. For years I was on track to live a very muted, ‘safe’ version of the life I truly wanted for myself, because of the circles I was in. I’m breaking free from those and I think everyone should.”

Slogan Machine is set to drop on May 19 via Convulse Records. Gumm previously shared the album’s title track.

It’s set to appear on their upcoming album Ticket to Fame along with the previously released singles ‘Haffmilch Holiday’, ‘Destiny’, and ‘Ode to Boy’. Ticket to Fame is set for release on June 9 via Fire Records.

Joyer Share Video for New Song ‘Silver Moon’

Joyer – the duo of brothers Nick and Shane Sullivan – have dropped a new single, ‘Silver Moon’, via Julia’s War Recordings, the label run by They Are Gutting a Body of Water’s Doug Dulgarian. The track was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Bradford Krieger at Big Nice Studio. Check out its accompanying video below.

“‘Silver Moon’ felt like a big change in approach for us as we shift to heavier and more energetic songwriting,” the band shared in a stateemnt. “The song touches on overcoming personal shortcomings and feelings of inferiority while making an effort to appreciate smaller aspects of life. This combined with the aggressive feel of the song makes it a really cathartic and satisfying one to play. It was written kind of a while ago and has been part of our live sets as of late. It’s definitely the most fun song for us to perform so we’re really excited to share the studio version of it.”

Joyer’s latest full-length, Perfect Gray, came out in 2021.

Midwife and Vyva Melinkolya Release New Single ‘Plague X’

Ahead of the release of their new collaborative LP Orbweaving this Friday (May 12), Madeline Johnston (aka Midwife) and Angel Diaz (Vyva Melinkolya) have unveiled one more single, ‘Plague X’. Following the previously shared tracks ‘Miss America’ and ‘NMP’, the track is accompanied by a video shot by Jon Mcwilliams and edited by Angel Diaz. Check it out below.

“The ‘Plague X’ video was shot alongside recording the album in the summer of 2021,” Johnston explained in a statement. “The collected footage shows behind-the-scenes of our time together in and out of the studio. At night we went herping, or looking for reptiles (rattlesnakes) and wildlife, along the deserted roads near Las Cruces. A lot of the concepts interwoven into Orbweaving were informed by our residency spent in Southern New Mexico. The video is a document of this deeply meaningful and special time.”

Charlotte Cornfield Unveils Video for New Song ‘Gentle Like the Drugs’

Charlotte Cornfield has released a new single called ‘Gentle Like the Drugs’. It’s taken from her forthcoming album Could Have Done Anything, which arrives this Friday, May 12 on Polyvinyl/Double Double Whammy. Check out the song’s Ali Vanderkruyk-directed video below.

“I wrote this song after a particularly special and memorable tour opening for Pedro the Lion in the west of the US,” Cornfield explained in a press release. “Something strong clicked on that tour, and I was experiencing joy on the road in a way I really hadn’t before, feeling fully present and just revelling in the company of my bandmates and taking in the spectacular landscape in a way that felt like a deep breath.” Cornfield says, “I had never really been to the desert before, to Southern Utah and Arizona, and I was very moved by it. This is a drifting summer song to me, about letting grief and anxiety go and feeling light and buzzed and in love and joyful.”

Ali Vanderkruyk commented: “The video is a 16mm travelogue following the hand of a wanderer writing postcards to a loved one back home. Each vignette acts as vessel for the lyrics for the song, acknowledging the beauty of home while observing the unfamiliar. We see the kitsch in chosen images for a postcard, as well as the ways one can personalize an object that is available to the masses.”

Could Have Done Anything is the follow-up to Cornfield’s 2019 effort Highs in the Minuses. Check out our inspirations interview with Charlotte Cornfield.
